Chapter 2: Awakening

Luna opened her eyes feeling uneasy. The events from last night stayed clear in her thoughts. She couldn't ignore the sense that the forest had tried to reach out to her. She sat up in her bed and looked at the trees far away through her window. "What's going on with me?" she said, her heart beating fast. The soft voices, the odd attraction it all seemed so genuine. In the kitchen, Mrs. Granger kept herself busy as she made breakfast. Luna took her place with the other kids at the table, but she struggled to pay attention to their talk. Her mind wandered back to the woods. "Luna, is everything alright?" Mrs. Granger asked seeing her lack of focus. Luna put on a fake smile. "I'm okay. Just a little sleepy." Once breakfast ended, Luna chose to stroll through the village. As she moved along the stone-paved roads, she noticed the worried looks from the locals. They spoke in hushed tones throwing anxious glances her way. "Why are they staring at me?" Luna thought, as her stomach tightened with worry. She felt like they knew a secret she didn't. As she walked through the market, she caught snippets of talk—mentions of the forest weird sounds, and vanishing people. Luna's discomfort increased, and she sped up wanting to escape the nosy onlookers. But no matter how she moved, she couldn't shake off the sense that something was very wrong in Shadowbrook. The forest, the murmurs, the way folks eyed her—everything hinted at something concealed something risky. On her way home from the market, Luna felt uneasy as a bunch of guys started trailing her. They were noisy chuckling and saying gross things that gave her the creeps. "Hey, girl! Why are you in such a rush?" one of them yelled, his words slurred from drinking. Luna stayed quiet. She kept her eyes down and sped up, but the guys walked faster too getting closer to her. "Come on, we just want to chat," another guy taunted grabbing her arm. Luna pulled her arm free, her heart pounding. "Get away from me!" The men chuckled amused by her terror. One tried to reach for her again, but a chilly voice interrupted. "Stop that." The men stopped and looked back. Draven stood there, his eyes icy and menacing. His presence overwhelmed them, and the men stepped away sensing the power in how he carried himself. "We were just messing around," one of them stuttered scared of Draven. "Beat it," Draven commanded, his voice quiet yet threatening. The men didn't wait for a second warning. They turned and fled throwing worried looks at Draven as they rushed off. Luna stood there trembling but at ease. "Thanks," she murmured trying to slow her pounding heart. Draven looked at her with an inscrutable face. "You shouldn't wander out here by yourself." "I-I just walked back to the orphanage," Luna said feeling both thankful and cautious. Something about Draven made her uncomfortable, yet she couldn't ignore the odd bond she sensed with him. Draven's look mellowed a bit, but his eyes remained stern. "Watch out, Luna. Shadowbrook isn't safe not for a person like you." Luna's forehead wrinkled. "What do you mean, a person like me?" Draven gave no reply. He turned and walked away leaving Luna with more questions than answers. As his figure faded into the distance, Luna couldn't shake the feeling that Draven knew more about her than he revealed. Later that day, Luna found herself near the town square deep in thought. She still tried to understand everything that had happened when she heard a familiar voice. "Luna, I found you." Luna turned to see Evelyn Grey walking toward her with a smile. Despite the pleasant expression, Luna felt uneasy. "Hello Evelyn," Luna said with caution. Evelyn's grin grew wider, but her eyes held an eerie quality. "I've been hoping to bump into you again. Our last chat ended too soon." Luna squirmed a bit. "What's on your mind?" A sinister glint flashed in Evelyn's eyes. "I just want to give you a heads-up Luna. You're hanging around some risky folks." Luna's brow furrowed. "Are you referring to Draven?" Evelyn gave a slow nod. "That's right. He's not the person you believe him to be. You should watch your step around him." "How come?" Luna asked, her interest sparked. "What makes him so risky?" Evelyn moved closer lowering her voice. "Draven has power, but it comes with a cost. If you get too close to him, you'll become involved in something much bigger than you can handle." Luna's heart raced. "What do you mean?" "I mean you should be careful," Evelyn said, her tone almost begging. "Don't let your curiosity put you in harm's way. Some things in this town should remain untouched." Luna felt shivers down her back. "Why are you telling me this?" "I don't want you to get hurt," Evelyn said in a low voice. But her eyes had a spark that made Luna doubt if she meant it. "None of this makes sense," Luna said feeling lost. "What's the real story in Shadowbrook?" Evelyn smiled again, but her eyes stayed cold. "You'll know soon. Just remember what I told you, Luna. Keep your distance from Draven. It's to protect you." With that, Evelyn turned and walked away leaving Luna with a heavy feeling of dread. Everything Evelyn had said made the mystery deeper, and Luna couldn't shake the feeling that something she couldn't control was pulling her in. That night, Luna lay in bed looking at the ceiling. Moonlight came through the window casting a pale glow over the room. She couldn't sleep; thoughts of Draven, Evelyn, and the strange events that had been happening filled her mind. A sharp pain ripped through her body making Luna gasp. She grabbed her sides as the pain grew worse, like her bones were breaking and reshaping at the same time. "What's going on?" she muttered, fear building in her chest. The pain increased moving through her arms and legs. Luna tried to yell, but the pain stopped her voice. She felt her body changing, her skin stretching, and she looked down to see her hands becoming claws. "No, no, no," she cried, tears running down her face. This seemed impossible. This couldn't be real. She fell out of bed, her legs weak. The small mirror on the wall showed her reflection half-human half-wolf. Her eyes looked wild, full of fear and confusion. Luna knew she had to leave, to hide. She couldn't let anyone see her this way. With her last bit of strength, she opened the window and climbed out, her body shaking in pain. The cold night air shocked her, but she kept going. She ran moving and, until she got to the edge of the forest. The whispers from the night before came back louder now almost calling her to enter. Following her instincts, Luna staggered into the woods vanishing into the pitch black. The agony overwhelmed her, yet she pressed on further into the forest, until she couldn't run anymore. At last, she crumpled to the ground, her form still trapped between human and wolf. As she rested there, out of breath and scared stiff, it dawned on her—whatever she was going through, it was far from finished.
