Chapter 3: The Hidden Heritage
Luna's body hurt as she lay on the forest floor awake. The pain from her partial change had drained her. She felt the cold ground beneath her, the smell of wet leaves filling her nose. Just as she was about too black out, she heard soft steps coming closer.
"Child, you've arrived," a soft voice said.
Luna opened her eyes and saw an old woman with gray hair and kind eyes standing over her.
"Who... who are you?" Luna asked in a weak whisper, her voice shaking from tiredness.
"My name is Agatha," the old woman answered kneeling next to Luna. "I've been waiting for you Luna."
Luna's eyes grew big in shock. "How do you know my name?"
"You don't know a lot, child," Agatha said helping Luna stand up. "Come with me. You need to rest, and we have a lot to talk about."
Too tired to argue, Luna let Agatha lead her through the thick forest. They walked for what seemed like hours, though Luna couldn't tell time well because she was so worn out. At last, they reached a small snug cabin deep in the woods.
Agatha brought Luna inside and placed her on a cozy bed. "Sleep now, child. I'll explain everything when you wake up."
Luna felt too exhausted to argue. She shut her eyes and fell asleep. As she drifted off, her mind buzzed with questions. Who was this woman? How did she know so much about her? And why had she been waiting for her?
Draven observed from afar as Agatha guided Luna into the cabin. He had followed Luna into the forest keeping back to stay hidden. Now seeing her so defenseless, he experienced a rush of protective feelings.
"She's tougher than she realizes," Draven said, his eyes squinting as he watched the scene.
He rested against a tree, his mind racing. Luna remained the sole survivor of the Silvermoon bloodline, a family tree people thought had died out years ago. Now that her powers were waking up, she faced more risks than ever before.
Draven squeezed his hands torn. One side of him wished to go to her, to shield her from the dangers that waited. But another side knew that getting too near might put her at even greater risk.
"Keep your distance," he ordered himself, but the words rang empty. "She needs to figure out how to manage her powers by herself."
Despite his determination, Draven felt a strong link to Luna. He had known about her for ages, but seeing her now, defenseless and oblivious to her true self, awakened something inside him.
"Agatha will show her the way," Draven mused, his look softening as he observed the cabin. "But I'll stay close if she needs my help."
With that, Draven vanished into the darkness keeping an eye on the cabin. He couldn't step in, but he would remain nearby—just out of view prepared to act if things took a turn for the worse.
As he vanished into the woods, Luna occupied his mind. She held more significance than she knew, and her awakening would transform everything.
Luna opened her eyes in a cozy bed, with the scent of herbs and wood smoke in the air. She looked around, confused, and sat up. The memories of last night flooded back, and she scanned the small cabin puzzled.
"Where am I?" she asked.
The door squeaked as it opened, and Agatha walked in carrying a tray with a hot bowl of soup.
"Great, you're up," Agatha said grinning as she put the tray next to Luna. "You must be starving."
Luna nodded, her belly rumbling. She grabbed the bowl and sipped, the soup's heat easing her sore body.
"Thanks," Luna said, though questions still filled her mind.
Agatha took a seat across from her looking serious. "Luna, you need to learn a lot. About your identity and your origins."
Luna's brow furrowed as she put the bowl down. "What do you mean?"
Agatha dug into her pocket and grabbed a tiny pendant, offering it to Luna. "Your mother, Selene Silvermoon, owned this. She was a strong werewolf, from a royal family everyone thought had died out."
Luna gazed at the pendant, her heart racing. "My mother... was she a werewolf?"
Agatha confirmed. "And you are too, Luna. You're the final Silvermoon descendant, a family with great strength and duty."
Luna's eyes welled up as she grasped the pendant with shaky hands. "But... I can't wrap my head around this. Why didn't anyone tell me before?"
"A rival pack betrayed and killed your parents when you were a baby," Agatha said. "They hid you to keep you safe, but now, your true nature is waking up. You need to learn how to control it, or it will control you."
Luna felt her mind spin with this shocking news. She had always known she was different, but this went far beyond anything she could have dreamed up.
"What should I do now?" Luna asked in a quiet voice.
"You need to accept your background," Agatha said, her tone firm yet caring. "And I'll help you. Your journey starts now."
Luna stood in the clearing outside the cabin. She gripped the pendant in her hand. Agatha watched her with a steady look.
"We'll begin with the basics," Agatha said. "You need to control your transformations. The first step is to understand your fear."
Luna breathed; her heart pounded. "I'm not sure if I can do this."
"You can, and you will," Agatha answered with certainty. "You are a Silvermoon Luna. The power runs in your blood. You just need to learn how to use it."
Luna nodded trying to calm her nerves. She shut her eyes focusing on the pendant she held. The memory of last night's pain remained fresh, but she pushed it away concentrating on the calm Agatha's presence brought.
"Feel the power inside you," Agatha said. "It's part of who you are. Don't fight it embrace it."
Luna took deep breaths aiming to tap into the strength Agatha mentioned. At the start, she experienced nothing but her usual sense of dread and doubt. Yet, she started to notice it—a warmth spreading in her chest, a throbbing energy that appeared to sync with the pendant she held.
"I can sense it," Luna said, her eyes shut.
"That's good," Agatha responded in a low voice. "Now, allow it to course through your body. Don't let it scare you. This makes up who you are."
Luna inhaled once more letting the heat surround her. Her fear lingered, but it started to dissipate giving way to a feeling of resolve. She knew she could handle this. She had no choice.
"Now concentrate on your change," Agatha said. "Allow the transformation to occur but maintain control."
Luna lifted her eyelids, and at first, nothing changed. Then, she sensed a familiar ache in her skeletal structure, a glimpse of the agony that had overwhelmed her earlier. This time however, it felt different. The discomfort remained, but she found it tolerable and under her command.
Her body started to change, her skin tingling as hair grew on her arms. Her senses got sharper, and she felt strength flowing in her blood. But this time, she stayed calm. She allowed the change to occur controlling it with her mind.
Bit by bit, Luna's shape altered, and she experienced her first full shift into a wolf. It thrilled her, with excitement replacing fear.
"You've done it, Luna," Agatha said sounding proud. "You've begun to accept who you are."
Luna gazed at Agatha with her wolf's eyes feeling thankful. This marked the start, but she believed she had found the right direction for the first time.
She had evolved beyond an orphan girl she now embodied Luna Silvermoon, the final survivor of her lineage.
