CHAPTER ONE
“You don't need to work. I just need you to keep being the perfect wife you have always been. Is that too much to ask?!” Aria West recalled her husband, Lucas West yelling at her.
She sighed as she walked into the bakery. She had been unmoved by his reaction, after all, this was not the first time she would be getting yelled at.
His new attitude just started recently and Aria wondered what was behind it. Every effort to make him see that she was trying her best always proved to be futile. Instead of reciprocating her efforts, he was now returning home late at night, and the mere sight of her seemed to disgust him.
What was once a perfect family was now crushing slowly, and that evening was no different. They had argued with Lucas raising his voice at her, slamming the door at her face, and leaving her all to herself.
Aria heaved a heavy breath as she remembered it all with the weight of her sadness pulling her down. She sniffled and tried not to imagine any negative thoughts as memories of their once beautiful relationship came flooding back into her mind.
“Maybe he has been overworking himself.” she said to herself as she walked towards the aisle where different kinds of cakes were being displayed.
She ran her fingers through the glass, trying to guess which one would suit their anniversary celebration. Her husband had forgotten about it, but she did not mind because she had taken it upon herself to make this a surprise, one that she hoped would put their family back in order.
As she went over to the cashier, Aria clung onto her necklace, a silver one bearing a love pendant she was given by her parents before their breakup. It was the only valuable gift she had received from their years of marriage and no matter how much she hated to think about their divorce, she still found herself putting on the necklace. Now it had become a part of her and she did not want to remove it again.
“Thank you for shopping with us.” the cashier said as she headed out.
Aria could only nod in response.
On getting to the building she called her home, Aria forced herself to put on a smile. She could already imagine Lucas' surprised face, his sweet apology for forgetting the date and a promise to start treating her right. This was more than a thought, it was a habitual routine her husband had acquired for every anniversary. But this time, she was prepared to take the first step in showing him she still loved him and was sorry for everything that must have caused him to flare up at her.
She wanted to remain the perfect wife in his eyes and make peace reign.
As soon as she entered, she closed the door gently behind her and set the cake down on the large dining table. Aria averted her gaze to their bedroom where she was certain her husband would be.
She let out a smile and carried the cake again, trying to calm herself for the big reveal. When she got to the door, she could hear him talking inside and paused.
Should she wait for him to finish the call? Or enter regardless?
This was supposed to be a happy day, she did not want her husband to yell at her for interrupting his “important” call. Just then, the sound quieted down a little and she figured it was best to enter.
Aria opened the door, expecting to see Lucas' seated on the bed with his gaze at the laptop screen, trying to get some work done. Instead, the man she called her husband was on the same bed she had visualized a few seconds ago, with a lady!
They were both naked as he was thrusting in and out of her with her legs wrapped around him, moaning quietly with her arms around his neck in a s****l way.
The two seemed to be having a good time to not notice the lady staring at them in shock and disgust. Suddenly, the cake fell from her hand. This disrupted the pair as they turned their sight to Aria.
Lucas hurriedly pulled the lady aside, his c**k still standing as he covered it with the sheets, while the lady did the same.
Aria felt her heart racing, her body vibrating. She did not know what to do. In fact, she was not sure if what she had just seen was real, or a dream. So instead of remaining there, she walked out of the room and back to the living room.
“How dare you walk into the bedroom without knocking?” Lucas thundered as he struggled to button up his shirt.
So what she had seen was actually true, Aria thought to herself.
“You know well that I don't need permission to enter our room.” she told him, her voice quivering as she turned to him, “Would you mind explaining to me what I just saw?”
“Babe, who is she?” the lady asked as she emerged from the room fully dressed.
“Babe?” Aria repeated, as she looked from her husband to the lady, “I am his wife, you motherfucker!”
“Oh, was she the–annoying thing–you always talk about?” the lady asked Lucas, eying her pitifully.
“Thing!” Aria repeated in an angry tone, then she turned to Lucas.
“Would you stop this nonsense!” Lucas yelled at his wife.
“I can't believe you would do this to me, Lucas. Was this the reason you always feel irritated and flare up at anything I do? Because you already have someone else?” Aria asked, her hands trembling as she could not contain her pain.
Lucas did not answer. His face held a blank stare as he watched his wife display her anger.
“He was already tired of how you pestered him all day,” the lady chirped in, “how you failed to listen to him, and so many other things. He was tired of it all.”
Aria averted her gaze to Lucas.
“Is that true?” she asked, “was I such a burden to you? I mean, I even wanted our anniversary to be the beginning of a new start. I put in all effort to make it work out for us. But while doing all this, you were having s*x with another lady?”
“You shouldn't have made any effort to change what has failed already. We both know that there is no way forward with this relationship anymore.” Lucas said, nonchalantly.
“What? That I should not have made an effort?” Aria asked, her anger rising with the heat.
“You heard him right.” the lady said.
Aria suddenly turned to her, her fist clenched in rage, she charged at the woman and raised her hand to land a slap on her face.
The lady screamed, but before Aria could land another, she felt someone hold her hand back.
“I might not raise my hand on you, but I will not tolerate you raising a hand at my lady.” Lucas told her.
Just then, Aria felt a slap across her cheek from the woman. Before she could recover from that, another swept past her cheek. She fell to the floor, her necklace sliding a few inches away from her.
Aria held her cheek as tears poured out her eyes. She could not imagine Lucas to disgrace her in such a manner. He had allowed her to be treated in a lowly manner not worthy of someone called his wife.
As she sat up slowly, she brought her hand to her neck, wanting to feel the necklace on her neck which was the only thing she had left. But it was not there. She looked to her side and saw it lying on the floor.
Just as she reached for it, the lady stepped on her hand, restricting her from getting it, then she bent towards the object, picking it up gently.
“Don’t you dare touch that!” Aria yelled as she saw her stare at the object.
“What is this? A treasure?” the lady smiled and turned to Lucas, “guess she has been spending your money on worthless things.” she told him.
Lucas smirked as he reached to collect the necklace from her.
“That was a gift to me.”
“A gift?” Lucas chuckled, “I can't recall giving you any like this.” Then he frowned, “Who is the man?”
Aria's eyes widened.
“Man?” she repeated, “That had been with me before you married me. Why are you pretending not to know about it?”
“It is not a pretence. I must have not paid any attention to it before, but now I have been drawn to the light by my dearie here, I am very disappointed in you.” he told her.
“Please Lucas, just hand it back. I beg you, that is the only valuable thing I have left.”
“Oh really?” the lady said.
Before Aria could spill another word, she heard a snap and watched as the love pendant fell to the floor.
