Humiliation
“Look who is here. A looser son-in-law.” As I walked into the room, the harsh words fell into my ears. These words were surely for me. My eyes immediately scanned the faces of the Blackwood family. They were all gathered in the grand hall, the air thick with their tension. But I could feel their eyes on me as soon as I stepped inside—judging, assessing, like I didn’t belong. “Why are you late? Where were you?” Elena stood beside me, asking in a sharp tone. She was stiff, her posture cold as ever—my wife. Or at least, that’s what she liked to call herself. I looked at her but didn’t reply. I knew better. A simple nod was all I could muster. No matter what I did, I was always the joke in this family. “I brought Grandma’s medicine and watered her plants, just like she asked.” I placed the bag gently on the coffee table in front of her. Grandma didn’t even glance at me. She nodded stiffly, her lips pressed into a hard line. Her silence was worse than her words—laced with disdain. “Who’s to say he didn’t steal the necklace?” Drake’s voice sliced through the silence, dripping with venom. “You know he’s the only one here desperate enough to do it. Pathetic.” I swallowed the lump in my throat. The accusation wasn’t new, but it still stung. I didn’t react, though it stung more than I’d care to admit. Drake always had a way of pushing buttons. But he was just doing what he did best—making sure everyone knew how much better he was than me. “Drake,” Elena snapped, irritation flickering in her eyes. “Let the cops do their job. Stop throwing baseless accusations.” “Still defending him? How ridiculous,” Drake shot back, his finger pointing directly at me. “Grandma, I’m telling you—he’s the thief. Who else would stoop this low?” I forced myself to stay calm, though my chest burned with anger. “Why are you so sure it’s me?” I asked, my voice steady but quiet. Drake laughed bitterly. “Because you’re nothing but a useless waste. Stop pretending you don’t know anything!” "You!" Elena's face turned red. I looked at Elena’s red face, was she fighting for me? That was strange. I walked over to Drake. Before I could respond, the room fell silent as the sound of approaching footsteps echoed through the hall. A police officer entered, holding something in his hand. “Did you find it?” Grandma’s voice, frail yet cutting, broke the silence. The officer nodded grimly. “Yes. The necklace was found in a drawer... in the room next to the annex. Whose room is it?” My heart sank. That was my room. “What did I tell you?” Drake’s voice was triumphant, his smirk widening as he turned to the others. “I knew it! He’s the only one shameless enough to do this.” I opened my mouth to speak, but the words stuck in my throat. “I didn’t do this,” I finally managed to say, my voice shaking. Grandma’s piercing gaze fixed on me. “Are you going to stand there and lie to my face, boy?” I felt the sting of her words. My hands clenched into fists. “I’m not lying,” I said, my voice quieter now, trying to keep my anger in check. She scoffed, and in a sudden, swift motion, slapped me across the face. The room went deathly quiet. I stood there, shocked, not knowing how to react. The pain was sharp, but it wasn’t the slap that hurt. It was the humiliation. The feeling of being completely powerless in this family. “Grandma, please, let him explain—” Sarah, sister of Drake stepped forward, her voice trembling. “Explain?” Grandma hissed, her eyes flashing with fury. “This is the thanks I get for supporting you? Get out of my house. You are not capable of being the son-in-law of the Blackwood family. It was a mistake of my husband.” My throat tightened, but I held my ground. I couldn’t let them break me. Not now. “Officer, please take him away and lock him up. Let him suffer.” I stared at her, my throat tightening. I wanted to shout, to defend myself, but the words wouldn’t come. The officers approached; their hands ready to restrain me. I looked at Elena one last time. She was ashamed, her face red. Did she even care for me? Did she even feel the humiliation I faced? Sarah looked as though she might cry. Drake smirked triumphantly. And Grandma... she didn’t even look at me as they dragged me away. I looked at Elena one last time. She was ashamed, her face red. Did she even care for me? Did she even feel the humiliation I faced? Sarah looked as though she might cry. Drake smirked triumphantly. And Grandma... she didn’t even look at me as they dragged me away. No one even cared about me here. I struggled against their grip, but it was useless. The last thing I saw was the door slamming shut behind me. I was alone—completely and utterly alone.
