Chapter 21: What Grows in Silence

1071 Words
Love did not find them like lightning. It found them like breath. Slow. Unavoidable. Already there before either of them knew when it began. Kaden noticed it in the smallest betrayals of himself how his feet carried him toward Skyler’s path before his mind gave the order, how the tension in his shoulders eased the moment she entered a room, how the bond no longer surged like a warning but pulsed like a promise. You’re orbiting her, Kane teased from deep within, lazy and smug. Kaden stiffened. I am not. You literally changed patrol routes to pass the infirmary. Kaden ignored him. Kane did not shut up. Skyler felt it too. In how she no longer stepped back when Kaden stood too close. In how her hands lingered on his skin when she treated him, not to heal but to stay. Sai purred in her mind, satisfied. He looks at you like the moon owes him answers. Skyler tried to scold her wolf. Failed. Smiled instead. They still said nothing. But the bond answered for them. At night, when the moon rose silver and full, they often stood on opposite ends of the courtyard never touching, never needing to. The distance meant nothing. The connection bridged it effortlessly, like invisible threads tightening with every shared breath. The pack felt it. Ironfang softened around them. Fewer clashes. Quieter howls. Even the restless young wolves slept easier. “An Alpha at peace makes a pack strong,” the elders whispered. Lyra heard every word. She played devotion like art. In the infirmary, she brought Skyler tea, warm and fragrant. “You work too hard,” she said gently. “The Alpha relies on you far too much.” Skyler smiled politely while Sai growled low in her chest. By the fire pits, Lyra spoke in murmurs. “He’s distracted,” she told the warriors. “Love makes even the strongest vulnerable.” Seeds planted with silk hands. With Eryx, her voice lost all sweetness. “They don’t hide well when they care,” she said coolly. “He would burn the world for her.” Eryx’s eyes gleamed. “Then we give him a reason to.” --- That evening, after council drained him to the bone, Kaden returned to his chambers and found Skyler already there. Not summoned. Not forbidden. Just… present. The bond exhaled in relief. “You don’t have to carry everything alone,” she said softly. He didn’t answer. He simply crossed the space and sat beside her, then without asking let his head rest against her lap. Just for a second. Sai froze. Kane went silent. Then both wolves burst into identical laughter. Oh look, Kane drawled, the mighty Alpha has become a lap ornament. Be quiet, Sai replied smugly. He’s exactly where he belongs. Skyler’s fingers slipped into Kaden’s hair without thinking. He closed his eyes. “One second,” he murmured. Skyler smiled. One became two. Then minutes passed, uncounted, unimportant. Silence wrapped around them not empty, but warm. Then Skyler spoke, amusement in her voice. “I think we should send our Alpha back to school.” He opened one eye. “For what?” “To learn time,” she said. “You don’t know what a second means.” He stared at her. Then he laughed. Real laughter. Unrestrained. It startled both of them. Their wolves howled. The bond surged not burning, not pulling just right. “I would choose you,” Kaden said hoarsely. “Even if it costs me.” Skyler’s breath caught. “Then let me be worth that choice,” she replied. The words lingered between them, fragile and powerful all at once. Kaden sighed, long and heavy, the kind of sigh that came from a chest carrying too many thoughts. His eyes drifted to the window, to the moonlight spilling across the floor. Inside Skyler’s mind, Sai stirred. He’s hiding something, her wolf said quietly. Skyler blinked, startled by the sudden certainty. Why do I think like you now? she muttered inwardly. Always sensing storms where there are none. then she looked back at Kaden and felt it. The pause that was too careful. The breath he held just a little too long. “Kaden,” she said softly. “Nothing?” He shook his head automatically. “Nothing.” Skyler’s fingers slid from his hair to his cheek, tilting his face toward hers. Not forceful. Just honest. “Secrets plant seeds,” she said gently. “And doubts are the best fertilizer for breakdown.” Kane went still inside Kaden. Sai waited. Kaden closed his eyes. Then he spoke. “Eryx came to me,” he said. “He wanted to ‘clear misunderstandings.’” Skyler’s body tensed, but she didn’t pull away. “He told me you and he were once lovers,” Kaden continued calmly. “That you shared a past. That you hid things from me. He said he was only telling me because he had ‘moved on’ with Lyra and wanted honesty between us.” Skyler felt the air leave her lungs. “And?” she whispered. Kaden looked at her. Not searching. Not doubting. Just steady. “And I told him thank you for sharing,” he said. “And that you already told me everything. That our bond is built on truth, not rumors.” Sai exhaled in pure relief. Skyler stared at him. “You… never doubted?” He shook his head. “Not for a second.” “Then why didn’t you tell me?” she asked softly. Kaden’s voice dropped. “Because I believed you. Completely. And I didn’t want poison to touch what was still growing.” The bond flared warm, fierce, unbreakable. Skyler leaned forward until her forehead rested against his. “You i***t,” she whispered, smiling through emotion. “You should have told me.” “And you should stop being so easy to choose,” he replied quietly. Their wolves hummed together. Not passion. Not fire. Something rarer. Trust. Skyler’s heart folded inward. “Then let me be worth that choice,” she whispered. "you are more than that", he replied while closing his eyes Outside the door, a servant passed. Inside the walls, whispers thickened. And from the high balcony, Lyra watched the moon rise smiling. Because love, when deep enough, was not weakness. It was leverage.
