I stood there for quite a while, listening to the night noises. Images of hungry headhunters and marauding flesh-eating animals flashed through my head once more. Then I thought of the army ants as I struggled to keep my toes in contact with the ground. “Oh f**k…,” I whispered. I wondered which would be better – eaten by a million ants or a dozen hungry cannibals. I stared out into the blackness of the night. It was totally dark in the jungle. Even with a full moon and a sky full of stars no possible light could ever penetrate the heavy foliage of the canopy above me. Then I thought if I can’t see the savages, how are they going to see me? They don’t have lights. I figured that I was in more danger in the daytime than I was here at night. My heart left my throat and my breathing settled
