Sassy woke up in a strange bedroom. She wanted to sit up, but she felt too weak to speak. She tried to speak, but her throat felt dry and inflamed.
As if on cue, someone turned on the lights and the rays pierced into her eyes and she quickly shut them.
"She's awake." The female voice said.
"Thank Goodness." She heard Delight's voice say.
Delight rushed to her side and sat next to her.
"Oh, Sassy. You're finally awake." She said and Sassy opened her eyes.
Delight cupped Sassy's face and kissed her forehead.
"I almost thought I'd lose you. You've been in this condition for a whole week. Are you crazy? How dare you scare me like that?" Delight said and hugged Sassy's stiff body.
A whole week?
Sassy tried to speak again, but only a croaked sound came out of her mouth and Delight noticed it.
"Do you need water?" She asked and Sassy nodded thirstily.
"I'll go get you some." Delight said and walked out of the room and in no time, she returned with a bottle of water and a glass. She turned water into the glass and helped put it on Sassy's lips. Sassy gulped the water down in one go. She finished the whole bottle of water and wanted even more. Delight brought another two bottles of water, and she drank all of it before she was finally satisfied.
"Thank you, Dee," Sassy said.
"You can speak, finally. How do you feel?" Delight asked.
"I don't know how I feel. My whole body feels stiff. Did you say I've been like this for a whole week?" Sassy asked.
"Yes, everyone thought you were going to die, except me. The only reason why you're still here is because your heart is still beating. We stopped feeling your pulse at some point too. I'm just glad you're okay." Delight said and held Sassy's hand.
"Thank you for standing by me. No one has ever cared for me this way before." Sassy appreciated and a tear dropped down her left eye.
"It's nothing."
"Where is this place?" Sassy asked looking around.
"I just reheated some food, Delight. Come and give some to your friend. I wouldn't want her to die of starvation. I hope you've given her a drink?" A female voice said from the door.
"That's my friend, Anna." Delight said and Anna gave Sassy a little smile.
Anna.....that name sounded a little bit familiar.
"Hey, Anna. Thank you for caring for me." Sassy said.
Anna walked forward, fully clothed in a nurse's scrub, and checked Sassy's pulse rate.
"Okay...you are healing quickly. You were in a state of hypovolemic shock due to the fire. You were also too stressed out and well, you also lost a lot of blood due to external injuries." Anna said.
Sassy just kept staring at Anna, she looked so familiar.
"Anna...were you at the orphanage before?" Sassy asked, remembering where she had seen her.
Anna kept calm and gave Delight some instructions before she finally turned to Sassy.
"Yes, Sassy. I was at the orphanage with you, before I got adopted. You need to rest some more, your wolf is weak now, and don't think about things you can't control." Anna advised and walked out of the room, Delight immediately followed her to get food for Sassy.
Sassy stared at Anna's back as she left. Little Anna then, was now a nurse.
Sassy felt she had failed, as she had not achieved anything.
Delight soon returned to the room with a plate of food in her hands.
She helped Sassy sit up and they both laughed as they listened to the loud sounds Sassy's bones made as she tried to stretch.
Sassy hurriedly ate her food, but then she remembered everything that happened before she passed out.
"How's your sister?" She asked.
"Joy? Well, she's okay. She's having a hard time trying to accept what has happened. But I know she will, with time." Delight said.
"Does she know you're here?" Sassy asked.
"Yes, she does. She's not completely heartless you know, she doesn't ask about your well-being though, but she lets me stay to take care of you." Delight said.
"If you're taking care of me, then who is taking care of her?" Sassy asked and Delight laughed.
"Joy has a lot of people to take care of her, she has her mate and our family, she has been with our mother since it happened. So, don't worry about all that." Delight replied and Sassy sighed.
"I wish all this never happened. I was finally happy." She said.
"No one wanted this to happen, Sassy." Delight said squeezing Sassy's hand softly.
"Before my world went blank. I remember hearing something. I think someone set the shop on fire to get back at me for something." Sassy said.
"What? Who was it?" Delight asked, wondering who could be so evil.
"The matron," Sassy said.
"What? Why? I don't understand. You said she was a nice woman, right? Why would she do this to us?" Delight said, fuming.
"I have no idea, Dee. I heard her say next time, the Alpha wouldn't choose her. I wonder why. I remember telling her he rejected me and she sounded so excited about it. I don't even know what is going on." Sassy said.
Anna walked in again.
"Delight, she needs to rest. She shouldn't worry about things she can't control. You need to leave her alone for some time." She said.
Delight stood up and nodded.
"Before I go, I just want to ask how much you know the matron. You were once at the orphanage right?" Delight asked.
"Yeah, I was at the orphanage. Is there a problem?" Anna asked.
"What do you know about the matron?" Delight asked again.
Anna glanced at Delight and Sassy suspiciously.
"Okay...I know quite a lot about her, I lived with her and her daughter, Megan for a while and..."
"Megan?" Delight and Sassy asked at the same time.
Sassy sat up on the bed and she and Delight looked at each other.
"Yeah, Megan. Look, I don't understand what's going on. Why are you asking me this?" Anna asked.
"Oh s**t. That b***h is the matron's daughter." Delight said and clenched her fists.
"Hello..." Anna said.
"So, all of this is because she saw me with Murphy. No wonder the matron called me saying she heard about what happened. Only three people knew about it then, just me, Murphy, and Megan. I asked the matron her source and she refused to disclose. I've been so foolish." Sassy said and held her head in disappointment.
"Does it have something to do with the fire?" Anna asked, trying to figure out what they were talking about.
"Yes, it does." Delight said.
"Oh.." Anna said and sat down beside Sassy.
"There are other things you don't know about the matron." She said and Sassy raised her head to look at her...
