"Hi, I hope you're not doing anything important?" I leaned my back against the wall, listening to my best friend.
"I've been helping my mum with the housework. I'm not doing anything for now. It's boring as hell without you." Chloe complained of the other end of the phone.
"Would you like me to suggest you come over to Auntie Joe's?" My eyes went to David, who was watching my actions and words.
"On my way. Better tell me what you talked to Cassian about the vows?" Chloe decided to ask the question at the wrong time and place.
I knew very well that David had excellent hearing and could hear every word Chloe said. I don't want him to listen to this conversation or anything to do with my mother. Enough unusual things are going on around here at the moment. We don't need another big scene. I rolled my eyes then took a deep breath.
"We'll talk about this face to face. I don't have time now. I'll see you at Aunt Joe's. You'll find me at the biggest table. I have a surprise for you." I ended the phone call in one swift movement.
I could feel David's questioning gaze fixed directly on me. I knew he had heard about the oath Cassian had made to my mother. The last thing I wanted to do at the moment was to explain the whole situation to him.
"Come on, let's go to the table. Our relatives have probably already missed us." I looked at David, who was looking at me with a severe face.
"Don't you want to tell me anything?" David raised his eyebrows at my face.
"I don't want to talk about it. I raised my eyebrows, wanting to end this topic as soon as possible. It's important to tell Chloe now, right?"
David didn't say anything. He just walked past me back towards the table where Cassian, Lucy, Isabella, and Finn were sitting. I didn't even have to look at Cassian I could feel his gaze on me.
"What are the plans for the afternoon?" I looked at Isabella as I took my seat at the table.
"Finn invited me to visit his house. I'll probably spend the night there, and tomorrow I'll book a hotel in this town." The corner of Isabella's lips turned up to look at me.
"Sara, are you coming with us or staying here?" Finn looked at me as he pulled cash from his wallet.
"I'll stay here. If she changes her mind, I'm sure Cassian will be able to bring me to your house." I explained briefly to Finn.
Soon, Finn, Lucy, and Isabella got up from the table and wished us a good rest of the day. Cassian has been incredibly quiet all this time. Drew my atention to David, who was nervously drumming his fingers on the table surface. I still do not understand the reason why he decided to be at this little meeting. I can well understand how nervous he is about meeting Chloe.
"Young people, may I have a seat near you?" Joan's voice drew our full attention.
"Of course, mum, what did you want to talk about?" David's eyes immediately went to Joan.
"Joe or Joan? I don't know how to address you anymore?" I looked at David's mother, a little confused.
"I see you've heard the legend. Whatever you prefer. No one has called me Joan for a long time." Joan smiled as she looked at my face.
"Is it true that you are a witch?" Cassian's unexpected question broke everyone's calm.
"Cassian, are you a vampire? Don't you think that's a bit inappropriate?" Joan's eyes fell on Cassian sitting next to me.
I feel a little lost in this whole situation. It seems that there are all sorts of vampire creatures sitting at this table. It is strange to see us all sitting so peacefully, even though we are entirely different.
"Why haven't you been looking for me all this time?" David turned his brown eyes on Joan.
"I knew exactly where you were, thanks to Sarah, of course. She used to love to tell me about her best friend and the wonderful evenings at the lake. Joan's eyes lingered on me for a moment. It was enough for me to know that you were safe and sound."
"So you're not Chloe's real aunt?" I rolled my eyes at Joan.
"Of course I'm not. I loved that girl immensely. It wasn't hard to convince her family that I was a relative, but witches are notoriously easy to persuade. No need, not even for an elaborate spell." Joan shrugged her shoulders and smiled.
"All these years, you've just been pretending?" I wanted to know the real reason why Joan had been like this all these years.
"I wasn't pretending. I love this job, and I love this town. I stayed here a long time ago without giving it much thought. I finally made a friend, an acquaintance, and started a new life. I couldn't go back to a place where I wasn't welcome." Joan's eyes went out of the window.
"Why don't you marry your son together?" Cassian gave Joan a questioning look.
"I couldn't accept the idea that I had ruined his life. The spell I had cast on my ex-husband had been on him too. It was all I could do to protect him from such a terrible fate. I couldn't look him in the eye and say it was my fault. But now that we have met face to face, there is nowhere to hide." Joan's eyes went to her son, who was sitting next to her.
I can't imagine how hard it must be for David to hear all these words coming out of his mother's mouth. After all these years of thinking that his mother had just left him, it turns out she was not far away. She was always watching over him, protecting him. Even if it was from the side, she was there. Joan probably knew about my mother being a witch.
"My mother, did you know all this time?" I looked at Joan intently, hoping to hear the truth.
"Did I know you were the strongest witch, Willow? Of course, your mother was my best friend for a reason. She was an amazing woman who could do incredible things with her words. I always admired her." Joan smiled broadly, her eyes turning towards me.
"How do you know I'm a vampire?" Cassian held his chin in his hand as he stared at Joan.
"I can feel how tense David is sitting next to me. The werewolf in me just can't sit still with vampires walking around. I can feel every muscle in David's body tense up as he fights to keep you from pulling your head off." Joan gave Cassian a wink, then glanced at David out of the corner of her eye.
"I'm sure David would have to work very hard to get my head to detach from my neck." Cassian turned his angry gaze towards David.
I saw what Cassian could do. Even now, the image of Emmet's wrists being shortened in one swift motion is still in my mind. She would have to bet on who was more substantial. David or Cassian would have to consider such a bet. I am sure Cassian would have no chance during a full moon, but it is not a full moon. Werewolves are probably not the strongest creatures to walk the face of this earth. The sound of the bell ringing reached my ears, bringing me back to reality. I got up from the table and took a moment to apologize. I'm not afraid to leave Cassian alone at the table. I'm sure he won't do anything terrible. I pulled my vibrating phone out of my pocket, then took a slow step towards the girls' bathroom. It's a place where the café music is a bit quieter than everywhere else. I pressed the green button and put the phone to my ear.
"Sarah, do you have a Cassian nearby?" Henry's voice came on the other end of the phone.
"Sure, or what happened?" I slowly walked towards the table where Cassian and David were sitting.
"I need you and Cassian to come to Frandlyn. We have a problem." Henry's voice was shaking slightly.
"Are you all right? Is Elaine okay?" I knelt on a chair near Cassian.
"As far as Elaine is concerned, she's not completely healthy. That's why I need your help." Henry's voice sounded like a whisper.
"How do you mean not healthy? I turned my gaze towards Cassian. "Is she with you?" I wrinkled my forehead.
"I'm staying at the GoldSun Hotel, room one hundred and three. Maybe you can stomp on Cassian's phone already?" Henry didn't want to say what was going on there.
I held out my mobile phone towards Cassian, who looked straight at me with a furrowed brow. David's eyes lingered on me but soon shifted his gaze towards the window. In a straightforward movement, Cassian took the phone from my hand and put it to his ear. Drew my attention to the doorbell, which rang as a new person entered the café. I turned my eyes towards Chloe, who was making her way towards our table quickly.
"Hello Auntie Joe, Sarah, Cassian. David? What are you doing here?" Chloe was kneeling on a chair near David.
"I think we need to have a serious talk." David's eyes went to Chloe.
"Is something wrong?" Chloe's eyes instantly rested on me.
"Chloe, I'm not your real aunt. My real name is Joan." Joan looked at Chloe with her dark eyes.
"What? Joan? You're Joan from the legend?" Chloe's forehead showed a few small wrinkles as she tried to make sense of the situation that had just occurred.
"Sarah, it's time for us. We have to go." Cassian's voice drew my attention away from the topic at hand.
"Where are you going?" Chloe glanced at me then at Cassian.
"We need to visit Henry as soon as possible. Strange things are happening there." I briefly explained everything to Chloe, getting up from the table.
"I'll be going along. I think an extra pair of hands would be useful." Chloe got up from the table in a flash.
"Maybe I should go along?" David winked at Chloe.
What happened to Elaine. David doesn't seem to want to leave Chloe alone. I don't know if it's because Cassian is going along or because he's worried about Chloe's health or life. Maybe we could use more help. Henry's a real bastard for not mentioning the actual situation. I hope he told Cassian everything in detail. Otherwise, my thoughts will kill me.
"If you're going in your car, then you can travel together." Cassian got up from the table and held out his phone to me.
"Fin took my transport. I'll probably have to stay here until you get back." David winked at me, still sitting at the table.
"Cassian, don't be a bastard. We could use the help." I glanced at Cassian, who was already standing at the café exit.
"Okay, just hurry up." Cassian opened his door wide and walked out of the café.
I followed Cassian out of the fairy tale with a quick step. David and Chloe walked behind me. Chloe didn't seem particularly disturbed by the news. I expected her to react much more vehemently than she did. After precisely ten steps, I opened the car door and took my place in the car. Chloe and David sat in the back seat of the vehicle. The vehicle soon moved out of the way, driving down a crowded city street.
"So what happened there?" I looked at Cassian, hoping for the truth to come out of his mouth.
"I don't know exactly. Henry mentioned that Elaine was kidn*pped. I don't know how serious the situation is. But one thing is certain. We can't lose any more of our people." Cassian gripped the steering wheel tighter.
"kidn*pped? Who could have kidn*pped a vampire?" Chloe's confused voice came from the back.
"My hunch doesn't fool me that it's Nikita." I glanced through the mirror at Chloe in the back seat.
"Can you enlighten me more about the situation you're in?" David's embarrassed voice echoed through the car.
"You're just part of the journey. You won't be part of our team." Cassian's angry gaze shifted to David.
"Come on, don't take an angry tone here. He only wants to help." Chloe shot Cassian an angry look.
"Crow, get out of the car. The last word is mine." Cassian's hands gripped the steering wheel tighter.
Under the small car passed a sign that signaled the end of the town. I looked out of the window at the trees flying by. My thoughts wandered again to the person who had a small special place in my heart. My eyes slowly drifted towards my palm, on which was a small black dot. I smiled faintly, one small hope that Dillan was all right. I leaned my head against the glass of the car, staring at the pose in front of me. It's going to be a long three hours before we reach our final destination. I hope Elaine is all right. Hang on, we are on our way.
