Chapter 14 - When you stop lying?

2663 Words
Quiet music filled the car's interior, making me feel a little sleepy. The pizza I ate before the trip was probably to blame. I turned my eyes towards Cassian, who was driving the car in a relaxed manner, looking at the road ahead. David and Chloe were chatting quietly in the back seat. My thoughts wandered to Dillan, who would not leave my thoughts. I can't get that scruffy brown-eyed man out of my mind who has shown me how meaningful and beautiful life is. My fingers moved over the ring that was hanging on my necklace. It's hard even to imagine the horrible things Nikita makes him do. The hardest part is I can't imagine how to bring him back. I could feel my eyelids getting heavy little by little. Probably nothing will happen if I take short rest of my eyes and mind. "Bedtime over, time to get up." Cassian's voice sounded somewhere in the distance. Isn't it time to get up? I opened my eyes with difficulty. I could see Cassian's face right in front of me, which was only a few centimeters away from mine. I put one hand on his face, moving away from me. I need space. He can't be that close to a sleeping person. I rubbed my eyes hard, then looked around. I'm still sitting in the same car. But David and Chloe were no longer in the back seat. Had Cassian run out of patience and decided to throw them out? "Where are Chloe and David?" I blinked a few times as I turned my gaze back towards Cassian. "Talking to Henry. We waited for you to woke up, but we had to take quicker action." Cassian's head nodded out the car window. My eyes slowly drifted out the window. I could see Henry standing with David and Chloe. I pushed the door handle as I slowly got out of the car. I strolled towards my friend's group. "What did I miss?" I looked at Henry, whose eyes instantly rested on me. "You missed the big bad werewolf who took Elaine." Henry explained the situation in a few short words. What? Another werewolf? How many of these creatures roam the surrounding lands. I don't like all this hope Elaine is safe. Just a few seconds later, Cassian joined our circle on the pavement. "So why did you need me?" Cassian raised an eyebrow at Henry. "Probably because he was so polite and said he would only talk to you." Henry crossed his arms over his chest. "When did that happen? Why do I keep hearing Cassian's name next to all the bad stuff?" Chloe crossed her arms and glared at Cassian. "Werewolf? Are you sure you're not niss something?" David raised an eyebrow at Henry. "I'm sure his two yellow eyes weren't lying to me." Henry shrugged, leaning against the wall of the house. "So, what's the plan?" I looked at Cassian then my eyes went to Henry. "Very simple. Emmett promised to meet with Cassian, then release Elaine." Henry's eyes went to Cassian. "Did I hear that right? Emmet? Is this the same person who wanted to decapitate you in a public place at lunch today?" I wrinkled my forehead, looking directly at Cassian. In my mind, I couldn't understand how Emmet had ended up so quickly in a completely different city. I'm sure Cassian has a lot to say about his debts and his excellent friendship with Emmet. But to hurt a vampire that Cassian has nothing to do with would be a perilous move. "You know him?" Henry's forehead showed a few small wrinkles of displeasure. "Are you sure it was Emmet?" Cassian crossed his arms over his chest and kicked a small stone with his foot. "Yes, he said his name perfectly. I'm sure I'm not mistaken. Perhaps you'd like to tell me what it all means?" Henry watched Cassian's every move. I have no idea what past horrors Cassian must have committed, but this whole situation is simply tragic. Elaine's life is in danger because of Cassian past nonsense. I hope he will not be a coward and will own up to his evil deeds and save her. I cannot lose Dillan's best friend just because Cassian is a real bastard. "Where did he say to meet?" Cassian's eyes left the ground to rest on me, then returned to Henry. "I don't believe he's a werewolf. As far as I know, there are only two of them. It's my father and me." David's eyes darted to everyone standing in the small circle. "34 Redstone street, said to meet at this address before the sun goes down. I looked it up, and it's a simple pub nearby." Henry pulled his phone out of his pocket and picked the address into the navigation. "We still have time. We can go there. Then we'll wait for Emmet to show up." I walked down the street towards where Henry's navigation was pointing. "Don't you think it's wise for all of us to show up at that café? Emmet only insisted on Cassian." Chloe walked beside me, glancing at me out of the corner of her eye. "If Cassian fails, then we'll have lost our chance to save Elaine. I don't want to mess up our plan." I glanced at Chloe, who was walking next to me. " This is not a full moon. There's no need to worry that the plan will fail." Cassian's face showed that little mischievous smile. "Are you going to explain what you did to Emmet that he's still after you?" Henry walked with Cassian behind me. "The story is concise. Emmet thinks it's my fault that his brother disappeared from his life. He thinks I kidn*pped him, killed him. Even though it's a complete lie." Cassian rubbed his eyes as he walked down the town street. "What about the truth? Emmet seemed angry enough." Henry gave Cassian a disapproving look. "Well, yes, I was picking on his brother, but I didn't kill him." Cassian shrugged and looked away. "What's wrong with you? Is there even one person who doesn't want you dead?" David glanced at Cassian and shook his head. "You talk too much. If you not stop talking, soon you'll be on my list." Cassian briefly put his hand on David's shoulder. "Get your filthy hands off me." David sort of shook Cassian's handoff. "Perhaps it would be wise for Cassian to go there alone. I wouldn't want to see a big wolf in the cafeteria." Henry gave Cassian a disgruntled look. "If you're scared of a small dog, say so. You can wait outside the door, and I'm sure I can handle it all by myself." Cassian smiled broadly, shoving his hands in his pockets. "And if he going to bite you, then we'll have a dead vampire." Chloe threw a glance over her shoulder at Cassian. "I don't think anyone would miss one dead vampire." David smiled broadly as he took Chloe's hand. "That's enough. No one will die, and everything will be fine. How much can you be angry at each other like little children." I glared at David, whose smile instantly disappeared from his face. "Everything will be effortless. I'll go into the café, talk to Emmet, and then leave with Elaine. Problem solved." Cassian clapped his hands as he looked at each of us. The mobile phone rang, drawing my attention. I immediately pulled it out of my pocket and looked at the caller ID. It was strange that nobody should be calling me at this time. Especially a number that was completely unseen. I swiped the phone screen then put it to my ear. "Hi, famous Willow. How's the walk going on this fine spring day?" Emmett's voice rang on the other end of the phone. "I think you've mixed up the numbers. What do you need?" I wrinkled my forehead as I froze in place. I could feel all my friends' confused gazes fixed on me. I pulled the phone away from my ear. Then with a simple movement, I turned on the speakerphone so everyone could hear what was being said. "Let go, doggy. When I get out of here, you'll just be a pile of bones." Somewhere in the background, I could hear Elaine's faint voice. "What do you want, Emmet? I thought your target was Cassian. Why are you calling me?" I could feel my anger rising a little inside. "My purpose has changed. There is a new context. If you want to see your vampire girl alive listen carefully to what I have to say." Emmet's voice sounded stern. The next thing I heard was a faint crunch. Then a loud feminine scream came from the other end of the call. I had to pull the phone away from me a little to avoid the loud screaming. What the hell has that little dog got up to. "Don't do anything Elaine, what do you want?" I hurriedly mouthed the words. "Let the animal go. You'll pay for this, I..." The phone in the background again screamed, then a deep breath. "Emmet, stop it. What are you doing to her? Say what you need to, just leave her alone." I felt a few wrinkles of excitement appear on my forehead. "My plan is straightforward. Let's meet at the address indicated. Don't forget to take Cassian. He's an important piece of this puzzle." Emmett's words were followed by a beep on the other end of the phone. "I'll cut his little head off shoulders if he did something to Elaine." Chloe clenched her hands into fists for a moment. "Calm down, sweetheart. Did you hear what Emmet said? All he needs is Sarah and Cassian." David put his arm around Chloe's shoulders, pulling her closer to him. "We need to come up with a backup plan. We can't put Sarah's life in danger." Henry kicked the first stone he saw under his feet. "I'll be all right. Cassian will keep me company. I think it would be best if you went to the hotel and waited until we got there." I looked at Henry and Chloe, who was watching me with suspicious eyes. " Do you think your life is safe in Cassian's hands?" Henry raised his eyebrows, looking straight at me. I know it seems strange to Henry, but yes. I know that Cassian won't let Emmett lay a finger on me. He's always been the one who's kept me alive. I'm one hundred percent sure that my life is safe with him. Even though Henry doesn't know the absolute truth about the oath, he'll have to take my word for it. "Yes, I think it's time for you to go. " I raised my eyes to the sky, which was getting darker by the minute. " Be well, Sara. See you soon." Chloe hugged me for a moment, silently wishing me good luck. "I'll see you in a few hours, Sara." David winked at me as he punched me in the shoulder. "If anything happens to you, Sarah, you'll be to blame." Henry's words was directed at Cassian. "Don't worry, hunter. I'll take care of her." Cassian gave Henry a wink, then put his arm around my shoulders. I watched David, Chloe, and Henry pull in opposite directions. I saw Chloe keep glancing over her shoulder, worrying if I was going to be okay. In one easy motion, I shook Cassian's hand off my shoulder. I looked at Cassian with my angry green eyes. He may have fooled all my friends, but I don't believe a word he says. Did he kill Emmet's brother? kidn*pped? Tortured? I guarantee he didn't tell the whole truth. I think it was just another convoluted lie. "What's that look on your face?" Cassian's eyes were staring right into my face. "Don't think I believe your stupid story. What did you do?" I crossed my arms over my chest, waiting for Cassian's real story. "Why do I always have to be the villain?" Cassian raised his hands as if in defense. "Because you hurt people. What did you do to Emmet's brother?" I didn't take my angry gaze off Cassian's face. "Emmet threatened to deal with Dillan. I had to take some kind of action." Cassian shrugged, leaning against the brick wall of the house. "Now Dillan's caught up in this story? Do you think that sounds convincing? When will you stop lying, Cassian?" I raised my eyebrows with a deep sigh. "You think I'm lying? Here's a piece of truth for you, witch. Dillan, at one point in his life, was a person who hurt everyone in his path. He didn't know how to control his magic after the day he woke up alive. Remember that house your dad had? Here's a detail of the story Dillan has been there before. He started a huge fire. There was a family in that house. Guess who lived there?" I could see Cassian's face getting angrier with every word. "Are you trying to tell me that Emmet and his family lived in that house? And Dillan just made it up?" I wrinkled my forehead. In my mind, I was trying to put all the dots of this story into place. It sounds illogical. Why would Dillan set fire to a cabin in the woods? What was the reason for all this? Indeed, Emmet lived there with his family. Wait a second. Could Emmet's brother be David? But Joan didn't mention that she had two sons. I feel completely lost in all these stories. Come on, Cassian, talk to me. I need answers. " Dillan used to practice magic away from people until he learned to control it again. There was one innocent fit of anger. Then he set the whole house on fire. There were two boys in the house that day, probably aged ten, maybe eleven. One of them I managed to save, the other I am not sure about." Cassian's eyes went to the sun, which was setting a little. "You mean Dillan set fire to the house where Joan lived with David and Emmet? Then why didn't Joan mention her second son?" I wrinkled my forehead without taking my eyes off Cassian. "It's effortless, she thought her son was dead and went up in flames. Emmet remembers my face, so he thinks I'm responsible for his brother's death." Cassian sighed and crossed his arms over his chest. "But the house is standing just fine now. How do you explain that? You're saying that Joan left her son after this incident? That the curse with which she bewitched her husband and son has already was cast? I don't see a shred of logic in your story." I rolled my eyes at Cassian's every action. " I am not a witch, Sarah. I don't know if the spell was cast or not. All I know is that I saved Emmet from the fire. Dillan escaped as soon as he set the house on fire. I guess Joan saved David. Probably during this incident, she noticed that the burn wounds soon healed. That's how she knew her son was cursed. She may have used a spell to erase part of his memory and left him to his fate." Cassian's eyes shifted to the sky, which was almost tinged with pink and orange. "All you have to do is show Emmett to David, and the problem is solved. That way, we save Elaine, and no one else gets hurt." I waved my hands, glad that had found a logical solution. "I don't think Emmet is crazy just because of his brother. It has something else to do with you. Otherwise, he wouldn't have insisted on having you at our meeting." Cassian's eyes came back to me. "Good evening. I hope I didn't interrupt your lovely conversation?" Emmett's voice drew my attention and Cassian's.
