" I'd like to meet you, finally." I extended my hand towards the girl, the corner of my lips turned up for a moment, then I glanced at Cassian.
"It's nice to meet you finally." Bree smiled as she gestured back, making room for a passage inside the house.
"To finally meet me? So Cassian already told you about me?" I stepped through the doorway into the house.
"He didn't say anything concrete, but he put you in a good word." Bree smiled as she closed the front door,
A bright, cozy guest room immediately came into view. It didn't look very luxurious, but it made me feel at ease. A few brights, cushioned sofas stood at the very end of the room. Behind the couch was a huge window, and beyond it was the wilderness. Beyond that was a narrow corridor, with two more doors leading further. The color palette was warm. Of course, there was one small armchair in the same color in the left-hand corner, with a bookshelf nearby.
"Make yourself at home, Sarah. Maybe a coffee, tea?" Bree waved her hand towards the sofa to show her hospitality.
"Bree, to the point." Cassian rolled his eyes as he sat down on the couch, his eyes lingering on me.
"Cassian, give me a ring." Bree turned her serious face towards Cassian, then held out her hand towards him.
Cassian slipped the chain over his head in one motion, his dark eyes looking at Bree as if he wanted to say something. Then he clutched the ring and chain in his hand and reached out towards Bree's hand. He squeezed his hand over Bree's hand so that the chain was instantly in her hand.
"Sarah, give me your chain." Bree turned towards me and held out her hand, her face looking a little kinder this time.
"No." I crossed my arms over my chest as I made myself comfortable on the couch.
"Sarah, don't act like a child. Bree is a witch." Cassian glanced at me, turning his head slightly to the side.
First, it's my mother's locket, can't just give it away. It doesn't matter that I don't need a ring, doesn't matter, my body is all magic. But my mother's locket is her wish, entrusted to me. I must pass it on to my eldest daughter, of course, when I have one. It all means too much to me, just cannot do it. Cassian should know that more than anyone else. All those memories of him are real.
"She won't steal him. I just need him." Cassian's green eyes studied my face intently as if searching for something, an emotion, an answer.
"Until you explain why I don't lift a finger." I gave Cassian an angry look.
"Bree has been watching my ring for some time, how, when, and why it changes colors. She thinks my ring is connected to your locket. Bree needs to have these findings in her hands to know if that is true." Cassian briefly explained the whole situation without taking his eyes off me for a moment.
"There is no one reason why your ring should be connected to my locket." I rolled my eyes, then looked to Bree, who kept glancing at me.
I felt like I was the only one in the room who didn't know the whole truth. Cassian and Bree know what I don't, and for a moment, the room was uncomfortably silent. I could hear Cassian sigh heavily, then stand up from the couch. He took a slow step towards the door of the house.
"Where are you going?" I raised my eyebrows as I watched Cassian walk away from me.
"It's time for you to go home. I'm your transport, haven't you forgotten?" Cassian glanced over his shoulder as he opened the front door.
"Cassian, wait." Bree held out her hand towards Cassian. I could see the fear in her eyes.
"Sara, are you coming?" Cassian paused at the threshold of the house, turning towards me, staring with his green eyes.
I knew very well that this woman would not get my pendant. It doesn't matter to me at all that it's about Cassian or Bree. It's too personal for me. I have so much to learn about the world around me. I can't trust everyone I meet along the way. First, I need to figure out this whole pendant and ring thing. I leaned my arms on the sofa, pushing myself to stand up. I raised my hand as I walked past Bree to say goodbye. Now I understood why I had that strange feeling in my chest when I was at this woman's doorstep. Maybe she was a witch. That's why I see things so strangely. Next time I'll know what that feeling is. Strange slight chills were running down my spine. I closed the door behind me, then walked down the steps to the walkway. I saw Cassian standing by the car, looking at me. Soon I brushed past him, opened the car door, and made myself comfortable in the seat. Out of the corner of my eye, I watched him walk slowly from the front of the car towards the driver's side. Then, when his hand reached for the door handle, his eyes found mine. I could see happiness shining in them, and slowly one corner of his lips lifted. I instantly averted my eyes. Cassian took his place beside me, started the car, and slowly drove backward. Out of the corner of my eye, I looked at his yellow hair, which was messy from the wind. His jaw tensed for a moment before he turned the car the right way round. Finally, we rolled slowly towards the main road.
"Who the hell was there? You said you didn't know what's up with your ring." I looked at Cassian, who was driving the car with a serious expression on his face.
" It's just a guess, Sara. I'm not sure." Cassian glanced at me out of the corner of his eye, then returned his gaze to the road ahead.
"I don't understand one thing. Probably someone has cast a spell. You're not telling me something, Cassian." I wrinkled my forehead as I considered the possibilities.
This must be where Cassian tells me about my memories. The reason I remember him is that he knew my mom. And the pendant was my mom's, so it must be connected somehow. Unless it's just one lousy guess like Cassian thinks.
"Forget it, Sarah, doesn't matter." Cassian's hands gripped the steering wheel tighter as he pressed harder on the accelerator.
Fields and forests flew past my window at lightning speed, with the sign of my hometown already visible ahead. I saw Cassian's face turn cold, calm, little by little. I didn't want to disturb him, just as I didn't want to give him my medallion. Until I know if all my memories are true, I won't trust him. I don't know the whole story, so I can't do that. Maybe Cassian is just one more danger, no matter that he is Dillan's brother. Probably shouldn't make Cassian angry at the wheel, then he drives like a madman.
"How did you meet Bree?" I turned my eyes to Cassian, who seemed a little more relaxed than before.
"She's an old friend of mine. I saved her life." Cassian shrugged, the corner of his lips turning up for a moment.
"Anything else I should know about Bree?" I raised my eyebrows as I watched Cassian drive the car, his blond hair teased by a slight breeze.
"As I said, she's a witch." Cassian's green eyes lingered on me for a moment, probably eye contact to confirm he wasn't lying.
"At one point in the room, it seemed like you were hiding something from me." I didn't take my eyes off Cassian's face, wanting to see his reaction to my words.
"What are you talking about?" Cassian furrowed his brow, looking in my direction for a few seconds.
"I was probably just showing off." I shrugged my shoulders, smiling slightly.
I know full well that I didn't show up. I can tell Cassian isn't ready to tell me the whole truth. I want to know everything that he is hiding from me. My thoughts were soon interrupted by the intrusive sound of a phone call. With a light movement, I took the phone out of my pocket, eyes lingered on the person who had disturbed me. Of course, it's Elaine, who could be more. But whatever it is, I am ready to hear it.
"Hello?" I put the phone to my ear, waiting for Elaine to speak finally.
"Henry and I have decided to go to Frandlyn. Maybe we can make it in time to find out about the missing persons." The words fell from Elaine's lips in a rush.
"You've recently returned, you sure about this trip?" I raised my eyebrows as I watched the streets fly before my eyes.
"We can't waste time, can't lose the opportunity." Elaine's voice sounded confident and strong.
"Call me when you get there. I want to know you're okay. Take care of Henry, not to kill him." I smiled broadly at the thought of such a stupid idea.
Although in reality, Henry hates Elaine for everything she did to his girlfriend. The fact is that Henry wants revenge, and he hasn't missed a single opportunity to kill Elaine. But now he has more important things to do, to save his best friend, Dillan. In this case, anger and strife can wait when united by a common goal. I am glad that they are of the same mindset, otherwise, we would have a civil war on our side.
"Of course, Sarah, stay alert, be in touch." I could guarantee that Elaine smiled a little.
The beep of the phone soon reached my ear, and I put the phone back in my jeans pocket. Cassian's face still covered by a cold mask, which didn't tell me much about him. The car slowly pulled up outside my house. My eyes drifted towards the front door of the house. As if a black cat had crossed my mind, I could see the front door of the house open. My dad's car is at home, and he never leaves the door open. In one swift movement, I stepped out of the car, striding down the path.
"Sara, are you OK?" I could hear Cassian's voice somewhere behind me.
"Something is wrong." I looked over my shoulder, my eyes pointing to the door of the house.
I silently climbed the steps, then slowly opened the door all the way. My eyes didn't see anything strange, see dad's shoes and his work jacket. My eyes went to the kitchen door, through which a strange light shone. Soon as I took a step across the threshold of the house. I immediately felt a hand on my shoulder. I flinched, and then turned to look over my shoulder and realized it was Cassian. He had one finger to his lips, not to make a sound. Then, with a simple gesture, he indicated that he would go first. I shook my head, completely disagreeing with this, hard to argue with me. I walked along the wall of the house to get to the kitchen door as quietly as possible. The first thing my eyes stopped on when I looked into the kitchen was Dillan sitting on the cupboard.
"Dillan?" A confused voice left my lips. I couldn't believe my eyes, felt my legs buckle for a moment.
"Finally, the second target has appeared." Dillan's eyes rested on mine, they were black as night. A wicked smile shone on his face, distorting his features.
Then my eyes drifted towards the kitchen floor. I felt myself instantly run out of air, legs refused to move. I looked at my father's body lying on the cold kitchen floor. I felt tears start rolling down my cheeks, voice seemed to get stuck somewhere in my throat.
"Hello, brother." Dillan's eyes instantly went to Cassian standing behind me.
"What did you do, Dillan?" Cassian raised his eyebrows as he gestured towards Dillan.
"I'm enjoying life, don't you see?" Dillan's eyes darted towards my father.
With a simple movement, I took my father's chilled hand in my shaking one. I felt tears rolling uncontrollably down my cheeks. Why did this have to happen? Dillan, what have you done? It's my dad, my big man, who took care of me. The man who always gives the softest hugs. What happens now? How to stop all this.
"Cassian, is there a spell? Resurrect Dad? Please..." I could feel my voice start to stutter, eyes kept darting to Cassian and Dad.
"Sara, I'm sorry." Something unusual sparkled in Cassian's eyes.
"Enough of this uninteresting scene. We're going back to the second target." Dillan's eyes instantly rested on me.
Dillan, what's wrong with you? What that b***h Nikita did to you. Where's that love of yours that made my world a better place. Do you see me only as a target? You promised me eternity on my side, and now you're standing on the other side of the barricade. Out of the corner of my eye, I saw Dillan in a simple motion throw something, a small knife glinting in his hand, with me as its final destination. I don't think there is a shred of goodness left in him. I reached out my hand, instantly pointing the knife at the wall behind me. I'm certainly not going to sit still when my life is in danger. I have nothing more to lose, just lost everything.
"Mistress Willow, you're not stronger than me." Dillan's face wore a wicked smile I'd never seen before.
In hindsight, Dillan's deepest feelings for me seem buried somewhere. It's as if he's a completely different person who sees no good in the world. Dillan's dark eyes pierced every inch of my body. Even though he's completely changed, I can still feel a strange warmth emanating from him. Perhaps all is not lost, still, hope somewhere in the dark. But the following action did not give me much hope. Another knife, only this time a different one, flew in my direction. I waved my hand, but it did not change direction. It was still heading straight towards me at a tremendous speed.
