In one swift movement, Cassian's hand was in the wall. He punched a big hole. I could hardly believe my eyes. He was destroying my house, wasn't there an easier way to get my mother's spell book out of there.
"s**t. Burning. Hurts, hurts, hurts." Cassian instantly pulled his hand from the wall.
" Probably let me try." I smiled, stepping closer to Cassian.
"Some spell probably protects the book to keep vampires out of it." Cassian stepped to the side, letting me near the hole in the wall.
I stuck my hand in the hole in the wall, not knowing what to expect. Soon my fingers grasped what looked like the cover of a book. I gripped the book with my fingers, and then I tried to pull it out. The hole was too small for the whole book to fit through. I turned my eyes towards Cassian, then took a step back.
"This hole is too small. Can you widen it?" I raised my eyebrows, looking into Cassian's green eyes.
Cassian took a step, with a few simple kicks, he made the concrete crumble to the ground. I really wouldn't want to take a punch from a vampire. The force of it could shatter concrete. It is scary to imagine what that can do to a mere human being. Cassian smiled, then stepped back, letting me approach the wall. In one easy movement, I pulled the book out of the wall, which now fit perfectly. My eyes immediately went to the book in my hands. It was all dusty and dark red. I could see a large golden "W" on the cover, which probably stood for my last name. I blew the dust off the book, then turned to Cassian, who looked at the book in my hands with big eyes.
"What now? What should I look for in it?" I gave Cassian a questioning look.
"We are going to my house. There we will have time to find out everything in detail. Elaine should be close to the town limits by now." Cassian glanced at the clock hanging above my father's bed.
I tucked the book under my arm, then turned on my heel and headed straight for the exit. Cassian followed without saying a word. I closed the front door of the house. I locked it in one easy motion, hiding the keys deep in the pocket of my jeans. Cassian, with his vampiric speed, was at the car in a blink.
"Come on. We don't have all day." Cassian opened the car door with one hand.
"Of course, I don't know how to run like you." I rolled my eyes as I walked down the terrace steps.
A few quick steps later, I opened Cassian's car door. I took my place on the seat with my seatbelt fastened tightly. The car soon moved out of the porch, heading down the town's streets towards Cassian's house. My phone vibrated in my pocket, announcing a new call. With a light movement, I pulled it out, instantly putting it to my ear.
"Hello?" I looked at the cars hurrying through the city streets.
"Sarah, it's Finn. I hope I didn't wake you. I'm going to your house with Isabella and Lucy. I hope we can meet there. Besides, have you seen David? He's not answering my calls." Finn's worried voice came on the other end of the phone.
"David with his girlfriend. He will show up at my house with me. What time do you plan to cross the city limits?" I turned my gaze to Cassian, who was driving the car calmly.
"I should be there in half an hour. I'm hoping for some help in unpacking my bags. After lunch, we'll go to the funeral parlor. I need to prepare your father's body for the meeting with the relatives." Finn's voice became a little quieter.
"I understand, we will meet at my house. Call me when you're around. I'm visiting friend at the moment." I smiled as I put the phone down.
" We don't have much time. While you go to the funeral, I'll try to find out what will need ingredients to save Elaine.
" We don't know yet if the answer is really in the book. Don't rush to live, Cassian." I looked at the crimson book in my hands.
Cassian was silent for a moment, and I turned my eyes out of the car window. The day looked beautiful, nothing out of the ordinary. It was different for me. I found my mother's spellbook. Today is Dad's funeral. Finn is moving into my house. Many little things are happening around me, although I wish everything would stop for a moment. I would like to have a free minute to sit down and think about what is next. I seem to be doing nothing more than rushing, flying, running wherever life takes me. I run my fingers over the cover of the book. I can't believe that this book is in my hands. For the whole eighteen years, I didn't even know it existed. I smiled faintly. Here is another little detail that my mother left me. It is so good to see that I follow in her footsteps, even if they are not accessible. My attention was distracted by a little red bookmark that stuck between the pages of the book. Curious, I opened the book in my hands, wanting to know the last spell my mother had cast. For her, at least, it's what I was thinking about. Maybe it's just someone I know. My eyes instantly went to the large letters at the top of the book - the death oath. I looked at the spell, which seemed to have been seen somewhere, but I did not know where. All that wrote were vague words. Below, in small red letters, it says - when the protected person's life extinguished, the one who took the oath also dies.
My eyes drifted for a moment to my left wrist, on which a small red cross still stood. Could this be the same oath that Cassina swore? It is true that when my heart stops beating, he will die too. Could that be true? Could Cassian's life be in my hands? Does he know the consequences of this spell? If I remember correctly, he told me that there are no side effects. Was that another lie? Did he dedicate his life to me by agreeing to die one day? My confused gaze slowly drifted towards Cassian. I saw him keep glancing at me out of the corner of my eye.
"What's that look like?" Cassian pulled his car into the front yard of his house.
"Is that the oath you swore to my mother?" I turned the book to Cassian, letting him look at the pages of the book.
Cassian turned off the car, then unbuckled his seatbelt with one hand. His whole body turned towards me, his green eyes moving towards the page of the book that was open. I saw his green eyes flicking over the sentences written in the book. Then his gaze stopped instantly on my face, or rather, he looked straight into my eyes. I saw a small smile appear on his face. I do not understand what is so funny. His life depends on mine.
"Sarah, my heart will beat as long as yours does. It's all written." Cassian opened the car door with one hand as he got out.
I got out of the car. I followed him with a quick movement. Then, with a brisk stride, I tried to catch up with him. He seemed to be running ahead as if he had burnt his eyes out.
"Cassian, wait. You lied to me. Why didn't you say all this before?" I looked at Cassian's back which was visible in front of me.
"Sara, I already told you everything. I don't think you need to repeat it." Cassian pulled the house keys out of his pocket, putting them in the lock.
With a quick movement, I climbed up a few steps, finally catching up with him. I had an absolute whirlwind of thoughts in my head. Was he so fed up with life that he decided to tie his life to mine? What nonsense, I am a girl who will grow old and die. Then Cassian's life will die with me.
"Cassian, talk to me." I put my hand on Cassian's shoulder to stop him from rushing.
In one swift movement, Cassian turned to face me. His two deep green eyes never left mine. In one simple gesture, he lifted his hand to tuck a stray strand of my hair behind my ear.
"I love you so much I'm not going to live a day without you." Cassian smiled, then turned on his heel and walked through the front door.
I stayed in one place. The words hit me hard across the face. That's so ignorant. This kind of prevarication kills two people at once. Cassian, is your love for me that strong? Don't you have a better purpose in life than to protect me? Is your life so meaningless that you've decided to associate yourself with just simple girl? What did my mother say to you that made you dive headfirst into such a proposal. These and similar thoughts were going through my mind. I shook my head for a moment to free myself from these horrible thoughts. I stepped through the doorway. My eyes went to Cassian. He was already sitting on the sofa by the fireplace. In his hand was a glass with a dark liquid. For some reason, my hunch didn't fool me that it was alcohol. Since Cassian has been drinking so often, he must be struggling.
"Come on, Sarah, we need to find a way to save Elaine." Cassian's eyes lingered on me, then returned to the glass of alcohol in his hands.
I took a quick step across the small corridor, then flopped down softly on the sofa in front of Cassian. His eyes instantly rested on the book I'd placed on the table. My thoughts were still troubled by Cassian's words. I felt confused, lost. Nevertheless, I turned the first pages of the book, looking for the correct page. I quickly ran my eyes over each page, but my search seemed utterly fruitless. I couldn't find a single spell related to werewolves. All I could find were oaths, curses, death, the search spell, the imprisonment thread, the resurrection of the dead, the touch of death, the kiss of life. Not a single word about werewolves, as if they didn't exist at all.
"Well, maybe you found something?" Cassian's eyes shifted from the book to my face.
"Nothing at all, not the slightest hint." I shrugged, staring at the book with a dull gaze.
"Try not to look up information on werewolves. Maybe it has something to do with healing. Maybe this book has a chapter or a spell." Cassian took a sip of alcohol from his glass.
My eyes went back to the pages of the book. I now took a little more time to look over each page to avoid missing any of the tiny details. Page by page. I felt a few tiny drops of sweat break out on my forehead. There isn't the slightest spell that could save Elaine. It seems that this book is not as valuable as it should be.
"Still nothing?" Cassian's voice drew my attention away from the book.
"No, maybe Henry was right." I closed the book and slide towards the middle of the table.
"Are you going to give up? Sarah doesn't sound anything like you." Cassian's worried look flickered across my face.
In a straightforward motion, I lifted the book off the table. Then I threw it straight at the wall with all my might. I felt the anger boil up inside me in an instant.
" SHIT." I put my fingers into my hair. "There's nothing I can do."
"Hey, calm down. We'll figure something out." Cassian's voice softened.
"We'll figure it out? There's no magic cure Cassian. Everyone around me is dying." I could feel tears starting to gather in my eyes.
I buried my face in my hands, wanting to give in. I felt my palms begin to heat up for some unknown reason suddenly. I could feel my body temperature rising little by little. Tears of betrayal began to roll down my cheeks. Is there no f*****g way to save Elaine?
"Sarah, please calm down." Cassian's voice sounded like an echo.
I raised my teary eyes to Cassian. I could feel my eyes getting more extensive with surprise. The bookshelf behind Cassian's back was burning with an open flame. Is that me? When did all this happen? I felt my chest getting heavy as if I was running out of air. Cassian got up from the sofa and took a few steps closer to me. My gaze immediately landed on his face, and he looked cold, calm,
"Cassian, don't come near me. Get out of my sight." My gaze became cold, stern, angry. "You're a damned liar." I raise my voice.
"Sarah, it's okay. Calm down." Cassian reached out his hand towards me to put it on my shoulder.
Can't the strongest Willow witch do anything? Can't save my friend's life? What kind of witch am I then? Am I even worthy of this name, this title? I'm nothing, just an ordinary girl who buries all her loved ones. Everyone around me suffers. Everyone around me dies. Why does my life have to fall to pieces? With Cassian's hand just a few centimeters from my shoulder, I waved my hand. Cassian flew to the side with a sickening thud, bump hard against the wall by the fireplace. The flames were getting bigger and bigger, and I could see them devouring the walls, the books, the ceiling, the furniture, little by little. My eyes went to Cassian, who rose from the ground in one heavy movement. Step by slow step, he walked towards me.
"Cassian, I told you not to come any closer." My gaze pierced Cassian's body.
"Sarah, I won't leave you. Please listen to my voice." Cassian stepped towards me, reaching his hand towards me again.
I'm not going to stop turning this whole house to ashes right now, but what difference does it make? It would be just another corpse in an already extensive list of the dead. I can already imagine the newspapers writing about the fire that killed two young people. I could feel a strange smile distorting my face at such a simple thought. I looked blankly at Cassian, who never took his shining green eyes off my face.
" What kind of a busty Cassian? You wanted to die with me. Now you have the chance." I held out my hand towards Cassian, readying myself for another blow.
I liked him so much to be hurt forward. Nothing is stopping me now. I can quickly end it all then he won't have to suffer anymore. Maybe we'll meet in heaven or hell for her such exists. Cassian, you're not afraid to die for me. Now's your chance to prove how stupid you are. I could feel the anger growing stronger and stronger inside me, like a boiling, bubbling pot. Cassian's gentle hand touched my face. He looked straight into my soul. I did not see a speck of fear in his eyes. It didn't matter that we were both surrounded by tongues of fire that were destroying everything in their path. That emitted a thick, poisonous smoke that made my lungs feel heavy. His gentle fingers touched my cheek. He knelt on his knees in front of me to show that he was not going anywhere.
"Sarah, I'll always be there. I won't disappear, I won't die, I won't run away. Put an end to everything, calm the flames. Come back to me..." Cassian's silent words left his plump lips.
