Evelyn: Chapter Nine

2187 Words
Evelyn I swung my legs back and forth, chewing my lip as I watched Wyatt scribble on some worksheets my mom gave him early this morning. I sigh deeply, scooting my rolling chair back to the desk as Wyatt flips a page on a book, his eyebrows pinched in concentration. My anxiety is getting worse the closer my birthday gets. Even though I knew he was going to be busy working with my mom and Connor today until his shift in the evening, I couldn't stop myself from joining him. I hated school. I was average at it at best, but I hated having to study and scrape by with B minuses just so that I didn't embarrass my father. Wyatt was like me at school too. We would pass all of our classes with decent enough grades and leave it at that. Ronan and Maddy were the brains. Ronan is aiming for Valedictorian this year. And Maddy was ours when we graduated in the spring. "Is Mountain Pass Pack a Trainer pack or Trader?" I look over at the work Wyatt has written down. He has a map of the United States laid out before him. His worksheet has an outline of Oregon on it and he's pinpointing all of the packs in the state and writing down if they're allies, trading or training packs, and what their trade is or how they train. "Who the hell is Mountain Pass?" I stand up and walk around behind him to take a look at the pack he's writing down. "It's some pack in Oregon. It's a small rogue pack that had to submit itself as a pack since it had more than thirty members." "Dude...I have never in my life heard about Mountain Pass and that's saying something since Dad has already made Maddy and I do this when we were like twelve years old." Wyatt groans and sighs as he leans back in his chair and looks up at me. "Well, why the hell is it in this ledger then?" I pick up the ledger he has been reading from and raise my eyebrows as I read the publication date. "This is over thirty years old, Wyatt." Wyatt grabs the book from my hands stares at the date and then looks up at my face with a frown. "It's from the library. It's all I had to work with. Is there another one?" I snort and place my hands on his thick. tense shoulders. I begin rubbing at them as he blows out a long breath and throws his pen down on the desk. "Yeah. My dad has the updated one in his office. My mom didn't grab that one for you?" "No. She gave me the paperwork this morning and then she got called in from a warrior that some person was dying at the hospital and they needed her for comfort." "She must have forgotten it." He closes his eyes as I rub his shoulders and take a deep breath. "Well, I need to get this done before my shift. I'm behind. I..." I roll his chair to face me and press my lips to his, silencing him. I wrap my arms around his shoulders and straddle him as best as I can in the chair that he's in. He kisses me back with a groan, rubbing my thighs until he's cupping my ass with his hands. His mouth still tastes like the energy drink I brought for him this morning. I grind down into his lap, feeling him hardening beneath me. I pull away and kiss his throat. I lick a line up to his earlobe and his hands squeeze my ass as he groans. "I can't do this right now," He growls as I nip at his ear. I pull back and smile at him. I slide down until I'm on my knees in between his legs and he takes a shaky breath. "Okay, you work and I'll just be down here." Wyatt opens his mouth but before he can say a word, the office door opens. I close my eyes as Wyatt smiles and grabs his pen from the desk. "Where's Evie? Mom said she joined you this morning." I let out a long breath as I popped up from the floor at the sound of my twin's voice. Maddy raises her eyebrows and behind her, Ronan places some fast food bags on the table in the corner of his dad's office. He grins and shakes his head as he looks from me to Wyatt and sticks a straw in his fountain drink. He takes a loud slurp from his drink and sits on the small two-seater couch in the corner. "Of all the places, you suck my friend's d**k in my dad's office?" My face heats and I shake my head. "No! Look! His pants aren't even unbuttoned. I dropped an earring down there." Maddy begins laughing as she shakes her head and digs through the fast food bags. "Your ears aren't even pierced, id*ot." Wyatt chuckles and Ronan hoots and grabs at the food Maddy hands him. Maddy brings Wyatt and me a burger and fries. I huff and take my food before I smile up at Maddy and shrug. "Okay, fine. Wyatt was stressing because he's working out of an old ass book and I was going to help him relax a little." Maddy goes to sit with Ronan and shakes her head. Ronan stands up, burger in hand walks the small distance to the desk, and picks up the book to take a look. "Dude...where did you even get this?" "The packhouse library. I was given the work and so I went and found this book." He shrugs and looks up at Ronan. He unwraps his food and I go and grab him his drink and mine. "Dude...you didn't ask my dad? I'm sure he has a current one in here somewhere." Ronan sets his burger on the edge of Wyatt's food wrapper and rubs his hands on his jeans before he begins rifling through his dad's bookshelves. We all sit and watch as Ronan combs through books, pulling some out of the shelf and thumbing through them before putting them back. "I was sure my dad had a current copy." He murmurs as he begins going through the drawers in front of Wyatt. "Have you done this before?" Wyatt asks him as Ronan frowns. He shuts the last drawer then looks at the maps in front of Wyatt and nods. "Yeah, back when I was like seven. The Fae had me map out their territories and because I was already doing that, my dad had me do the same with ours." I look up at him in awe and he shrugs and rolls his eyes. He grabs his food and a couple of fries from Wyatt before he goes to sit with Maddy. Wyatt throws a tape dispenser at him and he giggles like a schoolgirl and then begins choking on his burger. Maddy sighs as she pats his back and hands him his drink. "It's not a big deal." "I just...we never knew you've been doing Alpha sh*t since you were that young." "Not just Alpha sh*t. Fae sh*t. I have barely a f*cking sliver of Fae in my blood and they give me piles of work to do every time I show up. I'm...I'm sick and tired of it, to be honest." Wyatt frowns and sighs. "If I would have known that I was set to be the next Alpha, I wish I could have already been taught all of this. I mean, I know we map out the territories in middleschool, but I probably would have paid more attention. You know?" I roll my eyes and shake my head. "Likr it even matters. Dad isn't going to give you the position." I feel all of their eyes on me and I look up. I see a hint of hurt in Wyatt's eyes and Maddy looks angry. Ronan just scowls at me and shakes his head. "What?" "What makes you think Dad wouldn't pass it over?" I raise my eyebrows at Maddy and sigh. "You've met Dad, right? You know he thinks Holden is next. Holden. His blood. The way it has always been. When have you ever heard of an Alpha giving his pack to someone that isn't his blood?" Maddy rolls her eyes and pushes her food away. Ronan shakes his head. "Evie, my mom was never supposed to be an Alpha. Your dad allowed her to rule this pack by his side. Would it be so surprising if he passed the pack on to Wyatt?" "Yes! That's what I'm saying. It would be better if he didn't. I really don't even understand why Wyatt's going through all of this!" Maddy stands up and shakes her head. "Because he's the next Alpha, Eve. That's why he's busting his ass trying to learn everything he needs. And you're over here being a distraction! Mom believes in him or else she wouldn't be helping him So I don't see why in the hell you aren't!" I raise my eyebrows at her and stand up. "You want Wyatt to fight Dad? And right now, with dad's temper, you think Wyatt could win?" Maddy's nostrils flared and she nods. "I'm not saying I want them to fight, but this is the natural process. Dad is going to get weaker and Wyatt is getting stronger. When the time comes, if Dad doesn't want to give him what is owed to him, they will fight." I step closer to Maddy, starting to get pissed. "Maddy...if Wyatt just submits, none of this has to happen. Everything can go back to normal." Wyatt grabs the back of my shirt and Ronan grabs Maddy's hand. She's shaking, her fur beginning to peek out of her skin. The office door opens and Ronan's dad walks in, raising his eyebrows as he takes us all in. Wyatt yanks me back to my seat and Ronan pulls Maddy back to hers. "What's going on here?" "I..I was working on what Luna Elena gave me this morning and we all realized that the book I was using for my work is too old. I already did thirty states with that book, so I wasn't sure if I should continue." Luna Connor looks from Maddy to me and then to Wyatt and Ronan. "Let me see the work." Wyatt grabs the sheaf of papers he has and hands them to Luna Connor. I glare at Maddy and she looks down at her food with a scowl. "Sh*t. You're right. I think I can find the updated copy in Matt's office. But...maybe this is a good thing. You can continue with this old one and then when I get you the new copy, you can cross out and update your work. It's not all a loss. Now...what was happening when I first walked in?" I look up at his youthful face and press my lips together. Ronan shrugs and Wyatt grimaces and takes his work back from Luna Connor. "Evie and I were arguing over whether Wyatt is supposed to be the next Alpha or not." Maddy says, holding her chin up, looking like she wants a challenge. "Well, seeing as he's already getting Matt's powers, it's a no brainer. Of course there are other things that need to be discussed before that happens, but...that's why we're helping him learn." "But if he just submits, won't my dad just retain his powers and then Holden can be Alpha when his time comes?" Luna Connor looks at me thoughtfully and shakes his head. "Not necessarily. Wyatt has already made it clear he doesn't want to submit. This is only going to work one way. And that was is that your dad has to either give up his position to Wyatt when he turns twenty one or they fight for the position. That's it." I turn to Wyatt, surprised. "You won't submit?" "No." He says, avoiding my eyes. "If it's meant to be me, why not?" "But it's my dad. You're willing to fight him for power?" "It's his by right." Luna Connor cuts in with a frown. "Usually it passes on to the son, but if there is an Alpha more worthy of the position in the pack, then it belongs to them. It's not unheard of, but...it's rare." I look at Wyatt and swallow hard. Most of this time I have been feeling like it's been kind of a game to him but now...now I'm scared. If Wyatt decided go go through with this...who will I choose? My dad or him? And with my birthday just a couple of days away...will that change anything? Maybe if I'm his mate he will see sense and just submit. But...that would mean Maddy would be his too and she would support him against our dad. I leave the room without a glance back, my mind too full of possible futures that just seem too hard to comprehend at this point.
