Wyatt
My heart was pounding hard in my chest. My breaths were heavy puffs, steaming in the cold morning. The smell of the cold, hard ground filled our senses and it felt like home.
I turned to my left where a white wolf with a black snout snorted, his breath steaming out in a puff.
Scarr prods him with his snout and he prods us back before we take off again, our anger finally beginning to wane.
It's stupid. I shouldn't be surprised that Evie doesn't want me up against her father. But the sting is still here, even after the long-ass night. I thought we were a team. Just the four of us against everyone else.
But...now it seems like Evie doesn't feel like that. And the fact that she was so against it to the point where she and Maddy were about to fight it out didn't sit right with me.
I made it to where Ronan and I had stashed our clothes after running for a couple of hours and transformed. Ronan's wolf Lux trotted in after me, already as tall as my shoulders. He rubbed his head against my shoulder and I smiled and rubbed his head between his eyes.
He transformed and we got dressed before sitting down on a felled tree. He took some snacks out of the gym bag he brought and handed me water.
"Feel better?"
I shrug and he sighs. "Well, the girl's party is tonight. Are we going or...?"
"Of course, we're going. I just...I don't want it to be awkward. And...I'm kind of nervous. I mean, what if we're not mates? I mean it's a huge possibility. I'm one wolf out of...a f*ck ton that could be their mate."
Ronan shrugs and sighs. "It is what it is. I mean, don't get me wrong, they would be good for you, but...maybe some distance would be better since you're going after their dad's position."
I nod and shrug. "It's not like I asked for it. It's just...since I turned eighteen, it's all I can think about. It's like my brain is hardwired to want to lead, to want submission. I...I made Salem submit to me the other day and.. f*ck. She was scared and cried and I feel like sh*t."
"Sh*t, man. What did your mom say?"
I sigh. "She wants me to talk to your mom but she also doesn't want Alpha Matt to find out about me taking his powers just yet...so she told me I have to start putting money in a jar every time I use my aura at home. Like I even know when it's out."
Ronan snorts a laugh. "And how much money have you put in the jar?"
"Almost a full check now. It just comes out! I can be frustrated over helping with the dishes or taking out trash and bam! Dad's on the ground, tapping out as if we're wrestling and Mom is screaming at me to reel it back in."
Ronan is cracking up now, his head thrown back and I can't help but laugh with him. I sigh and reach into the bag of gummy worms Ronan brought out for us and chew on it.
"So, let's just get through tonight and maybe I can talk to my mom one-on-one to feel her out on whether she'll snitch you out to Alpha Matthew."
I nod slowly and pat his shoulder. "You're a good friend, Ro. Annoying as f*ck, but good."
He grins at me and elbows me hard. "Yeah, well no one else is going to put up with your big ass ego, so I figured I'd be the one to do it."
Later that night I take a deep breath and step into the packhouse where the girls are having their birthday party in the ballroom.
It's a casual event but wolves of all ages are dressed up, walking in and out of the ballroom that's decorated with light pink and lavender decorations. There are balloons and streamers everywhere with pink and lavender floral arrangements on all of the tables.
It seems like our entire high school is present along with students from the academy. Alpha Meredith must have opened up the invitation to the wolves from her previous pack, Blue Ridge because there are wolves that I don't even know from there as well.
I look around nervously, looking for the twins, sticking by Ronan's side.
I see my sister hanging out with Paisley and Holden. Farrah is with a group of her friends from school. Peyton is running around with pups his age. I can see my cousins Jack and George flirting with she-wolves at a table close to Farrah.
My mom is sitting with Luna Elena and Alpha Meredith on the dais chatting and eating. Luna Connor and Luna Ford are with my uncle Josh near a corner, drinking beers. Wes and Fiona are running around chasing my other cousin, Danny, who has a beer in his hand.
I catch him as he passes by me and snatch the beer out of his hands. "What are you doing, Dan the man?"
"I just wanted a taste. My friend Tricia says she tasted it and it's good."
Wes smacks his son over the top of his head and rolls his eyes. "I'll be talking to Tricia's dad if she keeps talking into stupid sh*t, Danny."
Fiona rubs my arm as she grabs her eight-year-old son by the top of his head and spins him to face her.
"Tricia's mom is about to get beat up, do you understand me? One more thing that comes out of that little girl's mouth, and I won't hesitate to beat her ass."
Danny grins and shrugs. "If she deserves it..."
Wes chuckles and sighs and Fiona rolls her eyes.
They walk off and Ronan laughs. "Crazy ass family, dude."
"I know."
I scan the room and finally spot Madison in a lavender dress that comes down to her knees. Her hair is pulled up into some fancy updo and she's wearing makeup. She looks hot as hell and I take a deep breath and straighten my button-up shirt.
"Damn, Evie looks like s*x on legs." I look over at where he's spotted Evie, leaning against her dad, giving him puppy eyes.
She's wearing a similar dress to Madison, except hers is light pink. She's wearing some matching heels and her hair is down, but wavy. Both of them look too good and my hands begin to sweat.
"Dude, I think I'm hoping they're not yours so maybe I get a shot when I turn eighteen."
I snort and shake my head. "If it's meant to be that way, then fine. Just know I'll be making moves on them until then."
Ronan shrugs. "The more the merrier. I've already suggested an orgy."
"Ronan!" We both turn as his dad barks at him from behind. Ford comes up to him with a frown on his face. He cuffs the back of Ronan's head and shakes his head.
"You need to watch your mouth. If your mom were to hear you..."
"What? Like she can talk? She's lucky enough to have two mates. Don't rain on my parade while I'm still able to play the field."
Ford smirks and leans in between Ronan and me. "Don't let your mother hear you is all I'm saying."
Ronan grins and nods. "Sure. Can I drink or is that a no with mom here?"
Luna Ford sighs and rolls his eyes. "Just don't overdo it, Ro. I can't have your mom getting all pissy at me for allowing it."
"Will she withhold on you or what?"
Ford chuckles as he shakes his head and walks away without an answer. I feel someone wrap their arms around my waist from behind and I turn and smile.
Evie grins at me and then takes a deep breath. "Agree to disagree on everything yesterday?"
I take her hand and pull her into a hug. "Yeah. Agree to disagree. You look pretty."
"Well, thank you! You don't look so bad yourself." I grin at her as she pulls away and looks me over. Maddy comes up from behind her sister and hugs Ronan and then turns to me. I pull her in on my other side and a part of me feels better now that they're both here.
"Where were you this morning? I went to your house with some kolaches and coffee and you weren't home."
I look down at Maddy and shrug. "Ro and I went out for a run this morning."
"Boo! You should have invited us! Terra could have used a nice run instead of having to help get all of this stuff up!" Evie waved around the room and I shrugged.
"Maybe next time."
Maddy smiles up at me and then turns to take Ro's hand in hers. "Yeah, maybe tomorrow morning when the madness has stopped? I know Ash needs a good run too."
Ro grins. "Hell yeah. We can go play hide and seek at the stream again. Lux loves that sh*t."
I stiffen as I feel a presence behind us. I turn and see Alpha Matthew coming up to us, his eyes on my hands wrapped around his daughters. Usually, I would have dropped them and left it at that. Ro does drop Maddy's hand when he spots him. But I can't help but tighten my hold on the twins.
He steps in front of us, still eyeing my hands on his daughter's waists, and then looks up at me with a barely concealed warning in his eyes. I ignore it, Scarr rearing his head up, waiting for a fight.
"Alpha Matthew." I greet him with a smile.
"Wyatt." He tilts his head and then looks at Ronan next to Maddy. "Ronan."
"What's up, Alpha?" He lifts a hand for a high five and Alpha Matt cracks a smile.
"Nothing much, Ronan. Just celebrating my girls turning eighteen at midnight. How about you guys?"
"Oh you know, the usual. Just trying to figure out the many ways to your daughter's hearts." I smirk as the Alpha shoots him a glare and then he turns to look at me.
"I assume you're keeping your hands to yourself, Wyatt?"
I squeeze the girl's waist and shrug. "Only as much as they are, sir."
His face darkens with anger and he takes a deep breath and manages a smile. "Don't get into too much trouble, angels."
"We won't, Daddy." Evie says with the most innocent smile I've ever seen on her face. Maddy just gives him a nod and he walks away towards the older males.
"You two need to stop teasing him. He's going to snap one day."
Ronan laughs and I snicker and shrug. "Yeah, well...we'll see. Drinks?"
We get drinks and when everyone has eaten some food catered from the fancy seafood restaurant in town, the dance starts. I'm not a good dancer. Actually, neither is Ronan but we don't shy away from attention.
We jump around and wave our arms, making the girls laugh. Our siblings join us along with kids from our class and it's fun. It's the most fun I've had in a while around other people other than my usual small group.
I'm sweating and tired. At this point of the night, after the girls cut their cake, the parents have all disappeared, along with the younger pups, so now there's more grinding.
At one point I was sandwiched between Evie and Ronan. The drinks were flowing and at some point during it all, we lost Madison.
It was just Evie and I on the dance floor, her back pressed to my front. My hands were on her waist and I shut my eyes as I felt her ass grind against me.
Suddenly, Scarr began to skitter around in my head and my eyes snapped open. I glance down at my watch and see that it's a minute past midnight.
Evie is still swaying and I will Scarr to tell me she's my mate. He continues to skitter around, ignoring me.
My heart is beating hard in my chest and I look around, wondering if maybe he's wrong. I turn Evie around and she gives me a sultry smile.
Scarr growls. Not our mate.
My eyes close and I can't be here anymore. They're not mine. I feel my eyes sting and I take a deep breath. I back away from her and she furrows her eyebrows.
Scarr is still pacing, but even thinking of trying to find the person who is my mate now feels wrong.
Evie watches me with wide eyes as I back away from her and then turn away. I find Ronan by the drinks and grab his shirt by the shoulder.
"They're not my mates. Let's go."
Ronan turns to look at me and I see a flicker of pain in his eyes. "I'm sorry Wy. I thought they would be, man."
I shrug and we walk out. I feel like sh*t, but it hurts. I can't face them and know that they're not mine. I had wished my entire life that they would be. I had hoped and prayed to the Goddess that they would be mine.
"It's alright, man. Let's go get plastered and we can forget about it. Alright?"
I nod as we make it out to the truck and hand Ronan my keys.
He drives us out to the stream, our favorite spot and we just sit in the truck. I run my hands through my hair and think of different men being with them. I look at Ronan and get a bout of jealousy at the thought of them being his. It's bad. It's horrible because he deserves them just as much as I do. But I can't help it.
The girls are not my fated.
