Chapter 1
Kate's POV
I looked in the mirror, trying to button up the last button as Clara sat on the bed.
"Does this look bussiness-y to you?" I asked, turning towards her and spreading my arms out so she could get a full view. I wore a white collar shirt and a black pencil skirt that stopped just above my knees and to top it off black flats.
"If by bussiness-y you mean ready to teach a kindergarten class, then yes, very," she looked at me sideways. "How'd you find this job anyways?"
"Well, a business man came into the restaurant and gave me his card," I was about to continue until I heard her 'ooh'ing.
"So, he just gave you his card out of nowhere?" She questioned, tilting her head again while I rummaged through my closet for my black blazer.
"No, he didnt just give me his card, I sat with him," I told her, throwing shoes off the top shelf to get to the back. Not that my height of 5'3 was helping.
"Sat with him why?" I could hear the confusion in her voice and was beginning to get annoyed.
"Because he asked me to," I said, finally finding the blazer and placing it on the bed.
Her eyes went wide as her voice got louder, and she quickly turned towards me.
"And you didn't think this was something you should tell me? A hottie business man asks you to sit with him and gives you his card. This is a sign. He must've wanted to fuck." She fell back against my sheets like her mind had taken a detour into dreamland, obviously forgetting who I am.
I couldn't hold back my laugh.
"Oh my god, Clara. No, he didn't. I think he was offering me a job. Hence why I'm trying to look proffessional."
"Oh, I see now," she gave me an evil grin. "You're going to seduce him in his office. Like one of those kinky boss smuts? Am I right?"
"You're wrong," I pointed at her before giggling.
"I never called him. I found a job at another company. His is actually supposed to be some kind of enemy of theirs, which is why i'm glad I didn't call because this one actually has openings."
"Yeah, you lost me at 'I never called him," I rolled my eyes before checking the time again. Ahh, close enough, I thought to myself.
"Look, I'll fill you in on everything later. Can we please leave now? I don't want to be late on the first day."
"Alright, alright," she said, putting her hands up before grabbing her keys.
We followed the GPS until we reached Wall Street where we saw the building with Knight's SEO Limited engraved in blue at the very top.
I waved her 'bye' and quickly rushed inside, the nervousness beginning to kick in. I didn't even have an idea where I was supposed to go. I walked to the front desk and a woman with dirty blonde hair asked me for my name. She handed me a card and told me to go to the fifth floor. No particular person to ask for, no office to look for.
So much help, I thought, sarcastically.
I got into the elevator and pressed the fifth floor. Luckily, I was alone. I didn't have to worry about awkward smiles or people asking questions.
Once I got off, I looked for any sign that said the name of the woman I spoke to on the phone, leading me to walk around blindly.
I looked for someone to ask, when my eyes met a man. He was tall, maybe 6'3. And it was clear he was rather muscular through his black suit. He had brown hair and he looked almost unapproachable. The power he held was written all over his devilish smirk. I tried to look away, knowing someone would notice me staring, and the last thing I need is to look like some creep.
I looked in front of him to see a man much shorter than he was and also much older looking, most likely why I hadn't noticed him at first.
I shook my head, realizing I had completely gotten off task when a woman approached me.
"Hello, I can't help but feel like you're lost," She smiled at me, looking sort of concerned.
"I'm Vivian. May I ask what or who you're looking for?"
"Oh, yes actually," I turned to her, happy to finally see the woman I spoke with on the phone.
"I'm Kate. We spoke on the phone earlier about a new internship."
"Oh! Wow, hi," she smiled even bigger. She reached out to shake my hand and then directed me to follow her.
"We are short on staff so you might want to roll up your sleeves. There's a Victoria Secret Party tonight. Two-hundred guests, two-hundred gift bags, and too little time."
She showed me to a room filled with gift bags and decorative items.
"Diana should be on her way to help. If you have any questions she's the one to ask."
I nodded, and she sent me another smile before walking out. I looked around at the bags filling the room and sighed.
"I know right," a woman I assumed was Diana said as she walked in.
"You must be Kate Have you clocked in yet?"
"Oh, no I haven't," I said before explaining that it's my first day.
"It's okay, honey, calm down," she replied, laughing at my worried-ness.
"The rude lady at the front desk should have gave you a card. You use that card to punch in next to the desk on the first floor. Go do that and I'll be waiting for you."
I uttered a quick 'okay' and then walked out and into the elevator. As the door was about to close, the guy I saw earlier walked in, and I rapidly looked down. Why? I didn't really know. It just felt like the right thing to do since I had pretty much eye-f****d him earlier. I glanced at him from the corner of my eye and - wow does he look better up close. I noticed he had a bit of stubble on his face which only complimented him. Who is he? I felt small again standing next to him.
The elevator started going down and I heard a small laugh come from his lips. Had he noticed me watching him? Or did I just look like an idiotic five-year-old with my head down?
I tried not to think about it and the elevator door dinged. We walked out together and went our separate ways.
Diana and I were close to finishing up, luckily. We had talked and she filled me in on some gossip of SEO. She seemed really nice. I was afraid to ask about the man I saw because if he was the boss, she'd probably make my interest in him gossip too.
"I'd tell you Victoria's Secret, but then I'd have to kill you," she teased showing me one of the shirts for the VIP guests.
"You like? The boss came up with it himself. "
"Very…hot," I said, surprisingly low on word options. She giggled and then folded it into a bag.
She then picked up one of the lace pink panties from the table and threw it to me.
"Why don't you keep this one for personal use. I'm sure a pretty girl like you has a boyfriend."
I shook my head with a 'nope', and her eyes widened the slightest bit. "Girlfriend?"
"No," I replied, laughing.
"That's not my thing."
"Well, we have some local talent here," she winked at me, referring to the other men that worked here.
"I can see that," I blushed, thinking of him. Why I couldn't get him out of my head when he probably has no idea who I am was interesting to me. I didn't know why, but I wasn't trying to find out either.
We filled the last three bags, and she asked me if I was okay to set them up in lines on the tables by myself. I was feeling tired but of course I said yes. By this time, the sun had gone down and most of the people had gone home or atleast everyone who didn't have to work the party. I put the bags that couldn't fit on the table under it and just as I put the last one down --
"Boo," I gasped and jumped up, putting one hand on my chest to keep my heart from jumping, too.
I turned around only to see…him.
"I'm sorry, did I scare you?" He grinned, leaning against the door frame. I laughed at my own stupid-ness.
"Hello..?" I said hoping he would finish the sentence off with his name.
"Daniel, Daniel Clinton," he spoke with proudness, placing his hands in his pockets.
"And who are you?"
"Oh, I'm Kate. Kate Claire." I wasn't sure if I should attempt to shake his hand so I just entwined my own innocently behind my back.
He repeated my name to himself, and I must admit it sounded pretty great as it rolled off his tongue in his deep voice.
Silence fell and I wasn't sure what to say to pick it back up. Confusion flashed on his face as he stared at me. I begin to feel self-concious under his hazel gaze and I licked my lips in nervousness. His eyes followed my movement and he licked his own, mocking me, except slower. More in a seductive way than mine. I gasped again, and my lips parted in shock. It made me feel warm inside, and I wasn't sure if I liked it.
His eyes lingered on mine a bit longer, and I assumed he noticed me folding into myself because he smiled and finally spoke up.
"Guess I'll see you at the party tonight then, Kate."
Him saying my name again sent a shiver through my body. He patted the door frame and walked off towards the elevator. I couldn't help but feel striken.
What the hell just happened?
Daniel's POV
I buttoned up my dress shirt and fixed my hair as much as possible. It would have been nice if Gabrielle hadn't run her hands through it, but if anyone knows how that goes; it's me.
I got in my black Maserati and drove back to the office. I was expected to speak and greet at this VS party, otherwise I'd finish the actual work I had to do.
I know one might think 'what type of boss sleeps with his employees?' Well, one who has a lot on his plate.
As the CEO, I have to meet the needs of employees, investors, communities, and of course the law. Let's not forget live up to what my father has done. Long story short; it's a lot of s**t.
Going up to the fifth floor, I decided to check on how everything was going. According to the interns: the party should go off without a hitch. Now that's what I like to hear.
As I made my final rounds, I noticed the woman from earlier was in the gift bag room, due to the see-through walls. At the time I approached she bent down to put one of the bags under the table. Although it was a nice view, I wasn't one to watch a woman creepily.
"Boo," I said in a high key voice and she jumped.
"I'm sorry, did I scare you?" She did a breath of relief, before laughing. Her laugh brought a smile to my face.
"Hello..?" She waited for me to give her my name and I was happy to comply.
"Daniel, Daniel Cliton,"I guess she really didn't know who I was, surprisingly. Surely she had seen my name somewhere.
"And who are you?"
"Oh, I'm Kate, Kate Claire," She said sending me a smile.
Kate. That was her name. I looked in her eyes and suddenly found myself lost in them. There was something about her. I just couldn't figure out what. I furrowed my eyebrows In thought.
What is it about her? She wasn't like my usual type. She is..
Small and innocent looking. Especially when she tried to avoid my gaze, looking left and right, yet I wanted to..
To..
What are the right words?
My thoughts were cut off when her tongue darted out and slid across her lips.
I licked my own, instinctively. I wanted to taste her. I tried to snap myself out of my dirty thoughts when I noticed her cowarding back.
Oh, of course it's like you to come on too strong, Daniel, I mentally shook my head at myself, before smiling at her. I had to fall back.
"Guess I'll see you at the party tonight then, Kate," I walked off before I could make her anymore uncomfortable. Usually, I wouldn't care. If there's something I wanted, I'd get it. But for some reason I cared now. I ought to be considerate anyways considering it is only her first day.
Enough of this woman chasing s**t Daniel, you got a party to host, I smiled to myself. That's right, I do.
"Thank you for coming," I repeated, hands and giving hugs.
"Daniel, this is going to make you a lot of money, you know," Kylie, a fellow CEO, embraced me.
"As it should," I responded, giving her a cheeky smile.
I walked over by the stage, getting ready to be announced. I glanced around at the pink decorations everywhere and laughed as 'You Sexy Thing' by Hot Chocolate played out of the speakers.
"While we're all here, I'd like to thank a very special someone," Eva, a partner of Victoria Secret's, spoke.
"We are happy to be his new partners. Daniel Cliton ."
The crowd of people clapped and cheered and I took my cue to come up. I gave Eva a double cheek kiss before grabbing the mic.
"I am honored, Eva. Thank you so very much."
I raised my glass of champagne as I thanked everyone who took part in making me successful in my endeavors and then Victoria Secret.
"A very sexy collection. Knight's SEO's most s****l-"
I paused at my tongue tied mistake, pressing my lips against my teeth.
"Most suc-s*x-"
I bit my bottom lip and laughed along with everyone else.
"Thank you everyone for coming out. God bless!"
I must admit it feels good to be the boss.
I walked down the steps and scanned the room. My eyes found Kate standing next to Daina by the gift bag table, but I knew I couldn't give her any noticeable attention with all the business men and women eyeing my every move.
Another business owner approached me and we engaged in conversation about an investment he wanted me to think about.
Frankly, I'm not interested but it wouldn't hurt to make him think I am.
No love lost. And more importantly no money lost.
"It's real sad what happened to Isaac, but I think this is a move he'd deffinetly want you to make," Luke said, trying to convince me. It disgusted me that he'd use my father's name for his own selfish desires and I restrained from showing it.
"I'll have to think about that one," I uttured through gritted teeth, giving him a fake smile.
After a while of conversating, I dued just about everyone their respectful goodbyes.
While I was waiting for my car from the valet my PA came toward me.
"I have some great news you might want to look into tommorow."
