Chapter 2

Kate's POV 2 So he is the boss. I don't know how I hadn't noticed before when his name is on every door in this building. Last night, Daina had filled me in on some of the men and women that were there. Luckily, none of them were his wife. That'd be a very awkward situation. Daina and I had to stand by the gift table and watch as they all had fun but according to her we had 'the best seat in the house.' I saw Daina leaving and then soon his assistant right after. I wondered if something was wrong but I knew I couldn't ask. Not even taking into consideration how weird it would be. Now I sat at a computer as I started organizing the employee files. I could see Daniel along with two other men in his office from where I sat, but I tried to get him out of my head. After all, I'm here to make money, not relationships. I had been sitting here for about three hours so far. Soon after, his PA Favour came rushing in, her heels clasping with the floor loudly bringing a few sets of eyes towards her direction. She walked into Daniel's office and waited for him to finish speaking before whispering in his ear. Once she did, his face went still and he jumped up from his seat. He said something to the two guys as I attempted to read his lips. "Excuse..just..over." I scrunched up my face in confusion, looking towards my computer. Favour and Daniel stomped past me, determined to get to get to their destination. He quickly shot up the stairs and you could soon hear friendly yelling? "Hello, Mark. How are you doing? Do me a favor and stand up." He then swiped everything off of Mark desk and grabbed him by his jacket. "Get the f**k up you piece of s**t! Gonna spy on me?" He slammed him against the chair as my eyes went wide as well as everyone else's. "I took you under my wing. I made you rich and you f*****g betray me?" He grabbed him once again and threw in out the office door making me gasp. The man looked pained and shocked. Most of the other workers seemed almost unbothered as if this wasn't the first time they had seen this. I would have never thought Daniel would be so hostile and brooding. It made me wonder if he has had anger issues in the past. "I hope Samara has a job for you," He looked down on him, walking out if the office door himself. He breathed heavily and smiled. " I accept your resignation, Mark," he looked up at us and dusted off his hands. His eyes immediately met my wide ones. It seemed as if he calmed for a second and he re-adjusted himself. "Micheal, clean out your new office," He breathed, walking back to his office, not making eye contact with anyone. His PA still following behind with a smile on her face. What even? Vivian sauntered my way with more files to organize, but I couldn't take my eyes off the office. She tried to hand them to me and then looked to where my gaze was. "Ahh, I see you've noticed Micheal just got a promotion." Night fall had come around again and I was almost completely done with my stack. As I was packing up, a body landed on my desk. Daniel had sat there and smiled at me. I smiled back awkwardly, too shy to say anything. "Hi, is there anything you need help with? How are you doing?" He spoke, casually. "Great, how are you? And no, not unless data entry turns you on," I responded, fidgeting with my hands. Why was he here? And trying to be nice? Was he worried I'd quit after what I saw? Ofcourse he wasn't worried. He's a boss. He probably has many lining up to work here. I shook my head at myself. "You know what. Surprisingly it doesn't. But let me tell you how my day went, I closed some deals, had to deal with stubborn investors, and employees up my ass all day," He told me, sighing and placing on arm on my computer. He failed to mention his savage attack on Mark, but I deffinetly wasn't going to remind him. "Wow, sounds stressful." "Very, but.." he leaned in close still smiling. "If you happen to find yourself bored around twenty fourth and fith street, say, nine o'clock, be sure to order The Manhattan. It's a real stress reliever. "Thank you for the offer, but I'm gonna have to pass," I told him, hesitantly. I didn't want to, but I had to. He stared at me and didn't say a word. I stared down, awkwardly. "Is there anything I can help you with?" "No, I'm just waiting for you to change your mind," He smirked at me. "Um, look Mr. Clinton.." He jumped up and cut me off. "I recognize that tone. It sounds serious." "No, it's just I really like working here and I'd like my work to speak for itself," I smiled politely and entwined my hands together in front of my chest. He is attractive yes, but I have to have my priorities straight. A long lasting crush or a job? You tell me which you'd choose. "Fair enough. Have a pleasant evening miss Claire and please, call me Daniel," He said, walking off. Would one drink hurt? "Hey, Daniel," I yelled and he stopped mid-walk turning around. "In case I change my mind.. Keep an eye out around desert." Maybe I couldn't get to know him sexually, but I could get to know him as my boss. His likes, his dislikes. It'd only help me do my job better. Mostly, so I won't end up like Mark . Not that I felt like he'd ever intentionally hurt me. Well, only two hours until nine and It'd take me half of that to figure out what to wear. Sigh. Daniel's POV I was in my office with The Phillips, when Favour came in and let me know Mark showed up. The audacity. He comes into my building after selling my info to Samara's guys as if everything is good. f*****g rat. Favour found an email to Samara from Mark's desk. You'd never think one of your own would turn on you. Loyalty. Does that mean anything to anyone now-a-days? You don't betray your friends. The ones who love you. That's not only the law of the jungle or Knight's SEO, but the law of the universe. Now it's no longer kill or be killed. It's kill or become irrelevant. And I plan on being relevant for a very long time. I might have reacted a tad dramatically and I realized that after my eyes met hers. She looked terrified of me. Not that it was bad, because she should be as I am her boss. But as someone who wanted to get closer to her it wouldn't help me a lot. If only she knew how serious spies are here. Not just because it's a big company, but also because of my past. Because of my father's past. She couldn't know. No one could. The only one who knows is Favour. She's my most loyal assistant. It's not to be confused with a relationship though. She's my lap dog, not my b***h. Besides she'd be more interested in Ariella than in me. All jokes aside, I had to find out how Ariella felt about it or me. Tonight. I wanted to forget about it which is why I didn't mention it, but by her reaction to me I could tell she hadn't. I asked her to dinner at nine, in a very discreet way ofcourse. After all, I'd be there on business either way incase she didn't show. My eyes grew wide at the sudden thought. A girl not showing up for a date with me? Daniel Clinton? CEO of Knight's SEO Limited? That should be a comical thought, but then again she did turn me down at first. However, I respected that. She had respect for herself. Not a lot of women do. Wait.. Did I just call it a date? I was at the table surrounded by some business partners and friends. We discussed our next moves and beginning in Miami. After business, we joked and drank. I glanced at my watch to see 9:06 And still no Kate. I guess she wasn't coming. It downed my mood only for a second but then Anthony placed a hand on my shoulder. "Are you waiting for someone, Daniel? Perhaps a booty call?" I laughed. "No, but I am waiting for someone. I guess she changed her mind though." "Well man, your luck could be about to turn around because a hottie just walked in." My eyes squinted and I looked to where he was gazing. Kate did come. A cheesy grin dispersed on my face. "That's her." "Oh, wow," He responded. "I know, hey try and get Matthew home. He's had too much to drink. I'll be right back," I walked towards Kate. As I did I scanned her body. I had just noticed the dress she was wearing with black heels and I have to say, I like what I see. She noticed me walking towards her and her pink full lips curled up into a smile. "That's one good looking dress, " I told her. She blushed, shyly and I found it kind of cute. "You don't think I'm too under dressed?" She looked down at herself and then around the restraurant at the women. She looked perfectly fine, better than. "Not at all, but for a second there, I thought you wouldn't show." I looked at her dress again and wow. "Did I tell you that's a good looking dres-" I was about to continue until I heard my guys. "Spin! Spin! Spin!" I let my head fall and sighed. I looked towards them. Matthew hadn't gone home and they made him spin in circles most likely seeing how long it'd be before he threw up. "Order two Hemmingways and I'll be back in time to tell you why it tastes like heaven," She nodded and I walked over to them. "What the f**k guys," I tried not to laugh, putting my hands on my waist before stopping Matthew from spinning. "His respectable business would appreciate it if you guys sent him home." "Yeah, we go home so you're left alone with the pretty girl," Matthew accused. "What pretty girl?" Justin questioned, looking around. "Can you just get him home?" I groaned. "Alright, alright," Anthony said, finally helping Matthew out. I walked back over to Kate with a sigh. She was drinking what I suggested and smiled at me. "I'm dizzy from the spin and I'm all the way over here," She joked, which I laughed and looked down. "I'm sorry about that," I rubbed my forehead out of stress as she continued to giggle and watched Matthew stumble out the door. "Okay so about the daiquiri. It tastes like heaven because it contains a dash of strawberry, white rum-" "Lime, grapefruit, and maraschino float," she finished for me proudly. "I knew there was something about you," I said, impressed as her eyes grasped my attention again. I couldn't stop staring at them. Even her smile. She brought me calmness. The same thing that happened at the office when I was handling that rat. She looked down again and I lost sight of her eyes. It made me uneasy and I lifted her head up by her chin. "Why do you do that?" "What?" She looked confused. Surely, she noticed how often she put her head down. "You get all shy and clammed up. Why?" I asked again. "Oh, um, I don't know," She said, trying to keep eye contact with me and even failed to do it now. "Yes, you do," I told her. No one just does it. What is she so shy about? Me judging her? "Well, before I worked for you I most likely would've never been able to talk to you and now that I am, I just.." I thought about that for a minute. I had no idea where she worked before, but I'm sure if I had seen her wherever it was I would have deffinetly talked to her. "You don't have to be shy around me," I've never comforted someone or gave them words of reassurance so I wasn't very sure of what to say."I want you to be comfortable with me. Don't worry about me being your boss or anything because that's a different thing than what this is." "It is?" She questioned. I didn't really know what I meant by that, but it seemed like the right thing to say. "I am your boss, but I am also your friend. I know what happened at the office today might've scared you a bit and I know it was a little dramatic. I just refused to be treated like that. Can you imagine what it's like being spied on? People out to destroy you with every move you make." It got me pissed just thinking about it. She opened her eyes wide, surprised that I had brought that up, but it was about that time anyways. "I'm sorry, I don't know what that's like," She said, looking down, but for the first time not in shyness, but in sadness. Maybe for me? I hoped it wasn't for me, I'm not looking for pity. "Where did you work before?" I asked, changing the subject. "Oh, I was a waitress," she told me, rubbing her arm. "That's the first time I had ever talked to someone like you." "Someone like me?" I raised an eybrow and she laughed. "Yup, he wore a suit," she said, running her hand on the slit in my blazer. "He was nice. He offered me a job at his agency or maybe just his phone number, but it was all full anyways," She shrugged, taking a sip of the daquiri. "Thanks to him though, I found Knight's SEO." "What was his name?" I asked, feeling a little uncomfortable about how she smiled when she talked about him. I was going to make a point by saying it's just as easy to talk to me as it was to talk to him, but something she said peaked my interest. She found my agency through him. Could it have been one of Knight's SEO's partners? "Umm, I don't remember." Her eyes moved away and I could tell it was a lie. But why lie? Whoever he was I had him to thank for sending her to me. I tilted my head and I was about to ask another question when she spoke up. "How about we make a toast?" "I'm down with that," I grabbed my drink and held it to hers. "What should we toast to?" "Hmm, I'd say to Micheal new corner office,"she sat up straight and smiled. I couldn't help but laugh. "Ofcourse, but let's add to never becoming irrelevant and this damn beautiful dress you're wearing," I said, looking it over for what felt like the 30th time. She blushed and her cheeked turned a beautiful light shade of pink. Our glasses clinked together. I was about to take a drink when my phone rung. "Clinton," I answered. "Westley Frank is on his way to you so you might want to evacuate to avoid confrontation. "
