Chapter 3

2509 Words
Kate's POV "What's his name?" He asked and I then realized my mistake. There's no way I could tell him who he was so I said the quickest lie that came to my mind. "Umm, I don't remember, " I noticed he tilted his head and hoped I didn't give any obvious signs of a lie. Usually, I'm pretty good at lying, not that that'd be good on a resume, but worth mentioning. I also realized him lifting my chin up was the first time we ever touched. It's only been about three minutes since and I can't even remember how it felt, letting anxiety get in my way. I could tell he was about to ask another question about the man in the suit so I quickly spoke over his thoughts. "How about we make a toast?" I suggested. He complied and I figured why not make it to Micheal new corner office since I had nothing else to toast to. He added to never becoming irrelevant and my dress, which surprisingly he seemed to like. It was a dress Clara got for me on my 23rd birthday. It was for 'incase I ever found a man' she had said. I guess I finally found one. Too bad he's my boss. But it kind of works out for the both of us. His phone rung, in which he answered with his surname. Ofcourse. How else would he answer it. I imagined myself answering with my last name., Claire I thought to myself, shaking my head. He snapped me out of my thoughts when he placed his phone on the bar. "I guess I should get a car to take you home," He said. He was smiling, but I could tell something was wrong. Very wrong. "Okay," I responded, unsure if I should ask. He replied with an 'okay' calmly seeming to get one last look in my eyes. He made one last call before he walked me outside. I had a really weird feeling considering he was in a bit of a rush. A black limo pulled in front of us and I was gently yet quickly pushed behind him. Confusion overtook me and I begin to panic. "Daniel, what are you-" The door to the limo opened and Daniel went still. I couldn't get a good view standing behind his tall figure but I heard a familiar voice and froze. "Daniel. Daniel Clinton. Pleasure running into you here." Westley.. Worry filled me and I grabbed onto Daniel suit jacket, wishing I could disappear. If he finds out I know him I'll end up just like Mark. Maybe even worse. Ofcourse, it's like me to be in the wrong place at the wrong time. "Westley. Westley Frank. I wish I could say the same," Daniel voice turned cold. "But if you will excuse me, I have some business to attend to." "Let's hope it's not the same business your father got involved in," He told him, nonchalantly walking in front of Daniel. Daniel let out a laugh, but you could tell it was one laced with poison. What did he mean? "Have a nice night," He told him through gritted teeth, but it was obvious he was already mentally plotting his death. "Hmmm, " Westley responded still standing in front of Daniel. Is he looking for me? How would he know I was here with Daniel? "I will, right after you show me what you're hiding behind your back there." I saw Daniel hands ball up into fists and I knew if he had hit him It'd make his business look very bad and it was obvious the way he handled the spy that his business meant everything to him. I stepped from behind Daniel with my head down, shyly. I was shaking, hoping he wouldn't recognize me. Daniel watched my every move until Westley spoke. "Oh, shame on you Daniel, for hiding such a pretty girl," He leaned down to my eye level to look at me. He removed his hands from his pockets and reached towards me, most likely to lift my chin up, but Daniel's hand stopped him. I looked up at Daniel's sudden movement and I immediately met Westley's' smile and dark eyes. He was closer than I had guessed. "I'm just trying to be a gentleman, Clinton. Can I do that?" Daniel moved his hand back down and I wished he hadn't. Once he did, Westley grabbed my hand and kissed it as he looked into my eyes. "Nice to meet you beautiful," He said with a wink, letting me know he did know who I was. Why he pretended he didn't in front of Daniel, I didn't know but I'd be forever grateful. "You know if Daniel here ever gets out of hand, feel free to call m-" Before he could finish his sentence Daniel pulled me to him by my waist, making me gasp. "Alright, that's enough. She's fine with me. Now I think it's best you go and tend to whatever business you have here." It was a warning not a suggestion and I could tell Westley was aware of that. He backed up with his arms up in surrender, repeating 'fine.' "Til we meet again,"He told us both, sending me another wink. I hoped Daniel hadn't seen it, but after Westley walked into the restraurant and bar, leaving just Daniel and I alone again. We were met with awkward silence for about a minute until the car he had called pulled up as if right on cue, yet not quick enough considering what just happened. By this time his hand was removed from my waist and he walked me over to the it. "Look, I'm sorry about what happened just now," He told me with a sigh, leaning on the car door. "Westley just doesn't quite know his place. You'll find out about our companies later on, but I had a great time. Thank you for coming out." I nodded at most of what he said, understanding. He just didn't know, I already knew what the problem was, but I wasn't going to let him know that. I may not have known why they were rivals, but I knew. "I had a great time too and thank you for protecting me in front of him." I blushed down again and he smiled at me, before lifting my head up again. "Chin up. It looks good on you." My eyes met his hazel ones and my heart constricted. I felt like the night was missing something. Maybe the usual hug goodbye? Kiss goodnight? Handshake? But I figured we had already gotten touch-y enough. "Have a great rest of the night and I'll see you at work tommorow." He closed me in the car and I told the driver my address. I thought about what all happened tonight. It almost seemed as if Daniel claimed me as his in front of Westley, but I wasn't going to over think it, incase i'm wrong. This evening went from good to bad to awkward and then to good again and I couldn't help but think.. What have I gotten myself into? Westley's POV I went back to Mia to see why Kate hadn't called. Does she have any idea who I am? Why wouldn't she? Once I went she wasn't there. A waitress named Tame assisted me. "Where is Kate?" "She quit," She said, casually, shrugging her shoulders. "But don't worry. I'm a much better server than she was." "Where does she work now?" I asked. I wasn't here to order anything. I was here to see her. If she quit and hadn't called me or Cheng, where could she be? "Who knows, but can I get you anything?" She said, sticking her chest out and giving me an innocent smile. "No, actually. Does anyone here know where she is?" It seemed the blonde waitress became aggravated by the way she rolled her eyes and sighed, but I wasn't interested. Maybe on a later date. "Her friend Clara is eating over there, why don't you ask her?" She rolled her eyes again and went off to another table. I looked over to where she pointed and there was a brown haired girl sitting at the bar on her phone. "Are you Clara?" I asked, standing with my hands in my pockets. "Is it my birthday already?" Her eyes widened. She then tilted her head at me and I didn't understand what she meant until she whispered. "Don't you think this place is a little too public to strip?" My eyebrows went up and I couldn't help but laugh. I could see why Kate valued her friendship. I spoke more seriously. "I'm no stripper, nor would I ever need to be one. But the waitress over there said you may know where Kate is." "Oh, you must be Westley, "Her eyes went wide again as if she remembered something. "She told me you gave her your card. You must be really commited to getting a call back, huh?" "Ahh, you could say that," There was no feelings for Kate. She was just a sudden interest. Something to keep me occupied for now. She was attractive, innocent. Someone to concur. I could have anyone I want to satisfy me, yet I wanted her now. And what I want I get. Maybe after I'd forget about her, but as of now I couldn't. "Do you know where she is?" "I'm sorry she never called," she said, sympathetically. "But she got a new job at Knight's SEO Limited like three days ago." "What?" My teeth pressed together as anger over took me. What the f**k was she doing at Knight's SEO Limited? Last time I checked, my card said Cheng Headquarters and she chooses my f*****g polar opposite. 'Knight's SEO Limited' ..... Daniel Clinton I know if he's seen her he noticed what I did about her. And if he thinks he's going to have her in his cocaine filled clutches then he's got another thing coming. Clara hadn't noticed my inner displeasure so she continued to talk, but I tuned her out, until catching the last sentences. "I think she's on a date now though so you might be out of luck, sorry," she finished going back to her drink. " Hopefully that's not a hit on you're ego or anything. You're still cute. Buy one of those fancy escorts and ice cream it out." I shook my head. Girls and their unhealthy ice cream binges. I couldn't just 'buy some fancy escort.' I own a business. The woman continued, telling me where Kate was. "You should've seen her dress, wow. She'll probably be getting some later tonight if you know what I mean.." I walked out, once I got the information I wanted, not caring to listen to anymore of her rambling. "Bye, Westley!" I had heard her yell from behind me. Kate had to have known of my distaste for Knight's SEO yet she went nevertheless. Little minx. What Kate didn't know though, she was mine the first day I saw her. It wasn't the time I asked her to sit with me. I had seen her long before that. But I waited. And Daniel swept her right from underneath me. If she's on a date with who I think maybe I could use this to my advantage. I've f****d Daniel over once and I can do it again. I will do it again. So much, that there will be no Knight's SEO Limited. Only Cheng. Looks like I have a date to ruin. Daniel's POV I didn't want Kate to see me snap again after Westley tried to push my buttons. I was surprised she stepped from behind me. I didn't want Westley to see her. He'd use her against me, somehow. He went to touch her and I stopped him. I realized I was showing too much possesivensss of her for my liking. I tried to remain calm as he kissed her hand and I could tell he scared her. More than he should. It brought confusion, but I heard him talking to her about me and instinctively pulled her close. Her arms went around me for balance and he looked my way. Mine, I thought. She was someone Westley couldn't take away from me. If I had given him the impression that she was nothing to me then he probably wouldn't try to use her to his advantage, but I had already done too much. He sent her a wink as he walked inside and if looks could kill, he'd be done for. I closed my eyes and tried my best to calm after he went in and Kate moved away from me to stand up straight, which only made it harder. The car I had called pulled up and I apologized to Kate. I never apologized so often before and the last thing I want is for a woman to make me soft. Especially with Westley lurking around every corner. I went to my car and headed home. The instant I arrived I undressed and climbed into bed, knowing I most likely wouldn't be getting sleep any time soon. I replayed the events of today in my head until I finally dozed off. Then I saw the worst. "Daddy where is mommy?" I asked, holding my lucky bear as I watched my father laying on the floor in his dark blue suit. "That's not what you need to worry about right now, Daniel," He said, picking up his drink and hastily walking towards the couch. "What you need to worry about is getting your ass back in your f*****g room." "You tell him daddy," A woman wearing a skimpy red dress slurred. I hadn't noticed her on the other end of the couch laying down. My mommy would never want her here. She had to be gone. But where? "But I want my mommy,"I whimpered, holding my bear tighter. "I'm not going to say it again, son," He warned, cuddling next to the woman and kissing her. I let a hot tear fall and walked towards my room. I'll be strong for you, mommy, I promised. I glanced towards her room and found the door was cracked open. She had to be in there. I let a smile slide on my face. I slowly opened the door, letting my bear hang by my side. "Mommy?" I said, looking to the side of the bed when I noticed she wasn't on it. My eyes widened and lip quivered at the sight. "Daniel, no!" My eyes snapped open. I sat up straight trying to remove the images as my hands flew to the sides of my head. I can't go back to sleep. Not after that. I had to release stress. I picked up the phone and made a call. There was a 'hello' on the other end and I grinned, slowing my breathing. "Gabrielle?" I breathed heavily. "Are you busy now?"
