Alyssa's POV
Mate?
What the f**k is a mate? I stared at him wide-eyed and unmoving. He was still on his knees at the end of the bed waiting for me to say something. I was out of pillows, I threw them all at him. I leant back against the headboard, and dropped my head into my hands. This couldn't be happening, I thought to myself. He's dulusional. This must be a cult.
"Please, Alyssa," he pleaded.
"Shut up," I hissed. "How do you know my name?"
"I'm a King," he said slowly. "It's not hard for me to find out information."
I stared at him stunned. A king? This couldn't be possible, it couldn't be true. He was just saying this to appeal to me. Maybe he thinks I like rich men.
"A King?" I asked slowly. He nodded. "You don't look like any kings I've seen in the newspaper. You're the King of what?"
"That's complicated," he said.
"Complicated?" I asked back.
He nodded. "Will you let me finish the story before jumping to conclusions?"
"I can't promise anything."
"Very well," he chuckled. "I'll keep it short. We are all wolves here, shifters if you will. My father united several packs under a single kingdom so we would not continue to wage war. He wanted peace, prosperity for our kind. So he united them, and in return they crowned him King."
"And now you're the king?" I asked. He nodded. "So what's this mate stuff?"
"We believe in the moon. The moon is a goddess and she blesses us with our shapeshifting abilities. There's a legend that the first wolf was split into two, and that your other half is your destined mate."
"Even if I did believe you," I said slowly. "Which I don't. But if I did...I'm not one of you."
"It's rare," he said, rubbing his temples. "But sometimes we are mated to humans."
Humans. Me. He means me.
This can't be happening, I must be in a dream. A funny, weird dream where this gorgeous man had given me attention in the diner. And now I'm going to wake up. I can't be a part of this.
"I can't let you go back," he said firmly. He got up off of the bed and walked towards the window. He opened the curtains and I could see the sun beginning to set. "I am the last of my family. You're my mate and I need you to stay."
"Over my dead body.: He turned around and let off a loud growl. That sound wasn't human.
"Don't you dare say that." He grabbed me by my wrists and lifted me gently so I was kneeling on the bed. I could feel the electricity between us going off. Tingles ran up my arms. I had this need to want to be closer to him. He leant in closer to my face. "As long as I am alive nobody will touch you, nobody will hurt you. You can be mad all you want. But I need you here, I am stronger when close to you."
"You're psychotic," I spat at him. "You are selfish and egotistical if you think I will stay here. I'll find a way to escape."
"You can try," he chuckled. "But you wont succeed."
"You do know this whole thing sounds insane!" I ripped my wrists out of his grasp, severing the physical connection. I fumbled to get off the bed and away from him. "This is a dream. This is a bad dream."
He sighed and laid down on the bed watching me pace back and forth. I had to figure out a way to escape, I had to figure out something. The door! The door we came through it wasn't locked. He had kicked it closed and maybe I could run out of it, try and find my cat and then get out of this crazy place. I made a break for it.
I darted towards the door, trying my best not to trip. I ripped it open and made it three steps outside before I felt his arms wrap around me and pull me back in. I screamed and kicked and did whatever I could to wrangle free of his grasp. It wasn't working. He was too strong, too powerful. He closed the door again and set me down, frowning at me.
"Don't do that," he said, growling. "You have no idea how dangerous things are here."
"You," I began. "You are the dangerous one here."
"I won't tell you again. Next time I will spank you into obedience if I have to." He sighed. "Look, I have enemies everywhere. People who want to take my position. People who want to challenge my rule. If they get their hands on you, I cannot imagine what they'll do."
"So far you're the only one who wants to do unspeakable things to me."
He chuckled. "While that's true, I don't want to hurt you. I want you to be happy here, with me."
"I don't even know you."
"My name is Jayce." He paused and took a deep breath. "I am King Jayce Rivermoon the second."
There was a knock at the door. Jayce got up to go answer it. I sat on the edge of the bed trying to make sense of what was happening. I couldn't believe this was happening. Just then Jayce closed the door and turned around, there was Mister Meow in his cat carrier. Tears fell from my eyes as I got up and took the carrier from him, I got Mister Meow out of his carrier and felt the familiar purring. Sitting back on the edge of the bed, I felt somewhat relieved that he had at least kept his word. I did get to see my cat again. I noticed my clothes in Jayce's other hand.
"I'll be sure to send the seamstress up to take your measurements for some new gowns." Jayce leant against the wall just looking at me while I checked over my cat. "You'll be staying in this room. It's mine but I want you to get familiar with it so I'll take one of the guest rooms."
"I'd be fine in a guest room," I said.
He shrugged. "Regardless, I'll take it. I'll make sure somebody brings you dinner. Don't try to escape again. I'll be posting guards this time for your protection."
"My protection or to keep me prisoner?"
"Either or," he replied. "It seems like you want nothing to do with me. I'll have to win you over."
And with that, he left. I was alone in my own thoughts again.
