Chapter Forty-Two

212 Words
That was his fervent wish. Unfortunately, it was a wasted wish, because that hadn’t been the case. He’d felt Serena long before he could see her, which brought all his hopes of this being the figment of an overactive imagination crashing to the ground. He did his best. He really tried to ignore the tug of something deep in his belly as she came closer but was unsuccessful. He’d even hoped that Aiden would walk right past them, even though he knew how unrealistic that was. After that, the best he could do was try and act as unaffected as possible which backfired in his face. As he couldn’t keep his eyes from roaming to her every few minutes and his observant sisters had taken note of that fact. “Okay, Caleb. Talk. This isn’t like you,” Cameron said as soon as Aiden and Serena walked away. Caleb shrugged and tried for a nonchalant expression. “I don’t know what you’re referring to,” he said feigning ignorance. Cameal chuckled. “You know damn well what she’s talking about. We aren’t triplets for nothing. We sense there is something bothering you. Now, why were you acting so weird around the new she-wolf?” Caleb looked off to the side before turning to meet his sister’s gaze, he knew if he was going to successfully lie to her, he’d need to do it to her face. “I wasn’t acting weird. I’m just preoccupied right now. I’m working on this research that is taking my full attention. I really need to get this vaccine engineered in the shortest possible time. So no, I don’t have time to be hanging around telling every Tom, d**k and Harry there is a new she-wolf in the pack,” he said with a hint of exasperation in his voice for dramatic and believability effect. Cameal’s eyes narrowed as she continued to study him. “Okay. We get how important your work is, but you could have been a little friendlier,” Cameron piped up from across the table. Caleb winced and met her eyes next, the colour almost the exact same blue as his. It was a family trait. “I was friendly.” She raised her perfectly arched brow. “Yeah, about as friendly as an angry grizzly bear.” “How would you even know how an angry grizzly bear acts? Have you ever seen one Cameron?” She rolled her eyes. “I watch the national geographic channel. So of course I know how they behave.” Caleb shook his head and opened his mouth to rebut when Aiden interrupted him by howling to get everyone’s attention. He shot his sister a glare which she just smiled at before they both turned their attention towards the alpha. Honestly, he was relieved to have the attention of his two inquisitive sisters off him. As an alpha wolf, he didn’t take kindly to being questioned by others. But of course, there were exceptions. Both his sisters were alpha wolves in their own right and seeing as how they were triplets, they were, of course, very close. His sisters had a way of extracting the information they really wanted from him, and he couldn’t afford for them to know he’d found his fated mate at this point in time. Especially, given the fact he hadn’t decided what he was going to do about it as yet.
