Chapter 9 I know getting out of here is going to be the best for everyone. I don’t know why they want to believe they are something other than human, but I know I am only human. “How about some breakfast?” Daniel asked. “I know you want to get out of here, but if the doc says you can go you want to have something in your stomach,” he mused. “I am a great cook.” “Are you?” I giggled. “What, guys can't be good cooks?” “I guess so.” I giggled. “But usually guys hate cooking.” “I did, and then my mate got sick and I had to take over everything. She taught me a lot before she died,” he said, turning his back to me. “But I am still learning something every day.” “Sorry to hear that.” I sighed. “I know it's hard when you lose someone, but I don’t know how I would be without the person I loved.” “It was hard at first, but as the time went by Darius managed to get me out of the depression,” he said turning to face you. “When you have a good family, things are easier but I think about her every day, I don’t visit her grave now but it's because I know she is close,” he said turning to his cooking. “Almost done and Darius should be here as breakfast is done.” I didn’t say anything, he finished the breakfast and made four plates, he slid one over to me, and the door to the kitchen opened and Darius came through with another man. “This is my Gamma, Ben.” he smiled. “I see you are feeling a little better.” “I am I want to see the doctor so I can get out of here, I am grateful that you have done what you’ve done but I need to get back to the city.” he kind of frowned. “Alright but only if he clears you, I don’t want something happening to you,” he said glancing at Daniel. “But only after he clears you.” “I know and don’t worry I don’t plan to lie to him, I mean I do feel better. There is some pain but it's not from this, it's from the accident.” I sighed. Even though the pain was manageable, I hated it. I didn’t deserve the pain inflicted after the accident, but I have been living with it so it's not something they can help me with. “Well you can get some help with that pain as well, you can come here for anything you need,” he said grabbing a plate. “Eat your food and if you are up for a walk I’d like to talk and get to know why the Rogue king wanted you to hurt me.” I didn’t want to talk about it, I don’t know why he took me or thought he could use me against Darius but I wish he could tell me why. “Maybe you can tell me why you think he wanted to use me against you, we don’t even know each other.” “I know, but there has to be a reason and maybe when we talk both of us can figure that out together.” “Alright.” We finished eating and of course, Darius disappeared again, I don’t know if he is trying to delay letting me go or if he doesn’t want to have this conversation. I slowly stood up and went to the window, Daniel didn’t stay in the kitchen after I stood up. Maybe I could just slip out the front door and no one would even care that I left. I don’t belong here, I don’t belong anywhere really. I looked at the door half expecting Darius to come through but no one did, so I wandered out into the main area of the house and to the front door. “Where are you going?” Daniel said coming down the stairs. “Sorry Darius has a call he had to take he is coming now,” he said as Darius came to the top of the stairs. “There was another attack and the Alpha asked me to help, but we’re going to have our conversation before I leave.” “So let me guess you’re going to ask me to stay right?” “Yes at least until I get back, I don’t want to let you leave and then something happened because the guy that did this is still out there,” he said meeting me at the door. “I know you think you are being held here, I promise you’re not.” “I don’t think that.” I sighed. “But I am starting to wonder why you want me here so bad, we don’t even know each other.” “Well that is one thing I want to do, we need to get to know each other especially since the rogue king thought we were together.” he sighed. “Come on let's take a walk, I want to show you around in case you want to stay here or if you come back here.” I didn’t say anything I followed him outside, when we hit the bottom stair, I looked around and noticed there were a lot more people around, some looked like they were guarding, while others looked normal. “Are we surrounded by guards?” “Yes,” he said noticing I noticed the guards. “But they keep things out, not people in, I promise Anna you are not going to be forced to stay, but I am hoping you change your mind.” “I don’t know if I can change my mind, I don’t belong here Darius.” I sighed. “I am debited to you since you saved my life, but as far as me leaving my life in the city for a forest life, I just don’t see how that is going to work, I am going to be a burden to you if I stay here I promise.” “I don’t think you would be,” he said shaking his head. “This is my favorite spot,” he said as we came to a lake, it was a light crystal blue you could almost see the bottom. “The fish are natural, we don’t eat them much but they have come in handy.” “You have it made here,” I said realizing this place calmed my nerves. “I mean it's beautiful here, and the fact you can come here to enjoy the water.” “Well you are welcome to come here when you want, and if you want to get away from the city then come here.” he smiled. “I know you want to go back to the city, but it's not safe for you, you were almost killed.” I didn’t say anything, he is right I almost died. But I almost died in a car accident, so dancing with death seems to be something I am good at even though I know one of these times I am going to lose and die. “I know but I’ve been there before, the accident almost took my life.” I sighed. “Tell me about this accident, what do you remember?” “Not much,” I said looking at him. “Just some wild wolves coming in front of my car, I hit some ice and went down the mountain, the doctors told me I would never walk again, but here I am.” I sighed. “Something happened to me that night, but it's not clear. I have had memory issues since then, maybe it's good I don’t remember much about it, the doctors told me a couple of guys managed to pull me out before the car burst into flames.” “So someone pulled you out?” he smiled. “I guess you have more than one guardian angel out there.” “Yeah I guess you can say that, the police don’t know who did it, they didn’t leave their names.” I sighed. “I wish I could meet them and tell them I am grateful that someone was there before I died, I don’t know who they are but I am happy they were there.” He didn’t say anything and that is fine, he wasn't there but there is something familiar about him I just don’t know what it is. “So tell me about this place, why do you prefer it to the city?” I asked. “Well we can be ourselves here.” he mused. “Daniel tells me you are having issues believing that we’re wolves and you are going to shift right?” he asked. “I just don’t believe it, there isnt any way that a man can change into a wolf, or a wolf can do the same,” I said shaking my head. “Are you sure about that?” he asked as a big wolf slowly approached us, I didn’t know what to do I grabbed onto Darius, and felt instantly protected. He kind of chuckled. “This is Daniel,” he said reaching out to touch the oversized wolf. “Now if you are calm enough he can shift and show you that he is Daniel.” he mused. “I know doing it this way isnt going to make things easier for you, but I feel like you can handle it.” “I still don’t believe you, and when you are wrong I am leaving,” I said pulling away from him a little even though having his arm around me I wanted more than anything. “So if he shifts into a wolf you’ll stay here for a while?” he mused. “ “Fine,” I said rolling my eyes. “But if he doesn’t shift then I guess you’re going to be my driver.” I giggled. “Deal,” he said looking back at the wolf. “Go ahead, Daniel.” When he didn’t shift, I kind of laughed. “So this works out for me.” I mused as I heard some kind of cracking, and then the wolf was gone and Daniel stood there naked. “I uh-” Darkness.
