BOUNDED BY THE CLAUSE
Chapter One: The Offer
The rain poured relentlessly over the city, soaking the crowded streets as Amara Collins hurried toward the bus stop. Her shoes were worn, her umbrella had a broken rib, and the envelope in her bag carried the words she dreaded most:
FINAL NOTICE.
She tightened her grip on the strap of her handbag.
Her mother's hospital bills had doubled in three months. The landlord wanted six months' rent. Her younger brother had stopped asking when she would be able to pay his school fees.
Amara had run out of answers.
Her phone buzzed.
"Miss Collins?" an unfamiliar male voice asked.
"Speaking."
"My name is Mr. Raymond, personal assistant to Adrian Kingsley, CEO of Kingsley Holdings. My employer would like to meet you today."
Amara frowned.
"There must be some mistake."
"There isn't. A car is waiting for you outside the bus station."
Before she could ask another question, the call ended.
She looked up.
A sleek black luxury car pulled to the curb. The driver stepped out, opened the rear door, and politely said, "Miss Collins?"
Her heart raced.
She had never seen a car like that up close.
Curiosity overcame fear, and she climbed inside.
---
Thirty minutes later, the car stopped in front of Kingsley Holdings, the tallest corporate building in the city.
The receptionist greeted her by name and escorted her to the private executive floor.
The office doors opened.
Standing before the floor-to-ceiling windows was a tall man in a perfectly tailored black suit.
Adrian Kingsley.
One of the youngest and most powerful CEOs in the country.
He didn't smile.
He simply turned and studied her with calm, unreadable eyes.
"You came," he said.
"You asked to see me."
"I did."
He walked to his desk and placed a thick document in front of her.
"I have a proposal."
Amara looked at the file.
The first page read:
CONFIDENTIAL CONTRACT AGREEMENT
She looked back at him.
"I don't understand."
"You will," Adrian replied.
"If you sign this contract, every debt your family owes will disappear."
Her breath caught.
"There has to be a catch."
"There is."
He paused before speaking the words that would change both their lives forever.
"I want you to become my wife."
Silence filled the office.
Amara stared at him, convinced she had heard him wrong.
"You... want to marry me?"
"No."
He shook his head.
"I want you to be my contract wife."
Outside, thunder shook the sky.
Inside, Amara realized that accepting—or refusing—this offer would change her life forever.
