Disaster strikes
Eli had spent the better part of 4 days preparing the ship as much as he could for the journey, squeezing every last drop of power from the systems possible while he researched the problem with the stasis pod. The latest diagnostic had isolated the problem and he knew he was in trouble now. Fortunately the first thing he had done was shut off life support to extend the amount of time he had, allowing the CO2 levels to rise before he actually cycled the air to combat the issue. The plants in the aeroponics bay helping filter the air with the mechanical pumps that actually didn't utilize power to move the air.
The issue was in the main control board, the wakeup sequence unable to be activated because the board has been hit by something at some point in the journey so far. In short he could go into stasis, but it was as much a death sentence as breathable oxygen running out because he would never be able to be woken again. It was the same problem with the other damaged pods, most of the other ones however totally destroyed to the point he couldn't canabalize the parts he needed to repair one of them. He knew his only chance of survival was to extend the amount of power he had, meaning he needed to reduce the consumption of systems that were unrelated to the stasis pods.
The math however was simple, the shields protecting the ship being the biggest drain on the resources he has available. His only option was to attempt repairing the hull, so that the shields didn't have to protect as much, this reducing the power they used. He however had no idea how to go about it, especially considering he had no idea if he could even safely walk on the hull while the ship was in FTL. His research on the subject providing a fuzzy maybe, because the shields were so weak to begin with. Assuming of course he even knew how he would repair it in the first place.
He knew he would be able to use the plasma cutter as a welding device, the change in setup simple to achieve. The issue was materials capable of withstanding the strain, most of the wall and floor panels to thin to be effective at creating a lasting seal.
He walked into the large storage bay they had been using, looking at the Ancient storage containers they had largely ignored. The walls of them were thick, thick enough that if he cut the sides off he would be able to use them as weld patches for areas of the hull that needed it. First however he knew he needed to determine if it was even viable, so he began emptying the largest one and sorting the contents as he powered on a tablet to log the supplies he was finding.
It didn't take long for him to empty the first one as it was mostly parts for the systems he was glad to have located, as he would be able to replace the bad ones as he conducted repairs throughout the ship. He knew his first objective needed to be Engineering, as it would give him the ability to do maintenance on the engines and hopefully improve their efficiency as well.
He was examining the best way to dismantle the crate when he saw a small button on the bottom near one of the sides, pushing it just before it made a sound and the side panel fell to the floor with a large crash. He looked at the other sides as well, pushing each button he found so that he finally had five separate panels that he would be able to put into position and weld into place. So he grabbed his keno sled, loading all 6 of them up once he found the lid again and went to the hole that Rush and Chloe had cut in order to regain access to the ship when they had been abducted by the aliens.
The first thing he did was fit the plug back into the hole, welding it back into place knowing that alone wouldn't be enough to seal the breach. He grabbed the first panel and slid it into the position he wanted as he pushed on the center, activating the magnetic seal that made it impossible to move again. He smiled knowing a magnetic seal would be far better than a weld on sealing the hull before he grabbed a second panel and repeated the process completely covering the plug. His device alerted him that as soon as the second seal was activated, the ship detected the shield was no longer necessary there and deactivated it. Although the drop in consumption wouldn't run life support for a day, he knew that if he could use these panels to seal the ship, he just might be able to make a difference over time.
So he rushed to the other one that had been cut into the hole, testing to see if just covering it would be enough as he set the alert for this section of the shields usage. As soon as the second panel was in place it went off again, alerting him that the shields had stopped protecting this area as well. He smiled as he considered his options, knowing they were relatively few. This however would give him a fighting chance as he went and found two more small breaches, sealing them with the panels to reduce the strain on the shields. It didn't seem like much at first, but he knew by the time he got Engineering sealed it would be a huge difference.
So for a full day he emptied the crates they had discovered so far, 25 crates full of parts, equipment and supplies he had no idea if they were good or not still sorted and stored inside the room had created 150 panels that he had loaded on his sled. That was when the idea struck him that there was an airlock that they hadn't been able to utilize because it was in a depressurized section, it being the closest location he would be able to store any more panels he found and allow the robot to perform the task of sealing the breaches from the exterior of the ship.
Eli had used 6 hours of his previous time to sleep, knowing that every moment was critical as he got into the first pressure suit and set up his airlock in the corridor with everything he needed. he sent the air back to the other corridors, knowing he couldn't lose the atmosphere because he didn't have the power to replace it by electrolizing the water to create oxygen. As soon as it was done he set to work, knowing he was on the clock inside the suit because of the oxygen he required to breathe.
7 hours later he finally reached the end of the corridor where the airlock was, the ship detecting it was sealed now and shutting the shields protecting it down. He knew pressurizing it would be the true test as he activated the pumps to do just that. He watched carefully as the corridor filled with the invisible gases, quickly reaching pressure and stabilizing as soon as it did. Once the pumps shut off he was glad to see it wasn't fluctuating at all as he unsealed the helmet, looking at the stack of panels that was now only 30 of them. It has taken far more than he thought it would, but was glad that he could now use this airlock as he stripped the suit off before opening the interior door of the airlock. Stacking the panels there took almost no time at all in comparison before he loaded the suit onto the sled so it could be recharged for his next excursion once he emptied more crates that he had discovered while he was sealing the breaches in this corridor.
Eli however decided this would be the perfect time to take a break to eat, as well as see how much his efforts had paid off as he had sealed a good number of larger breaches. As soon as he picked up the tablet however he noticed an alarm going off in plasma storage that he knew was about to throw a wrench into the works as he commanded the ship to drop out of FTL.
Just as the ship reverted to normal space he felt the explosion rock the entire ship as alarms from every system started blaring before the entire ship went dark and the computer link shut down entirely. Using the light from his phone he ran to the bridge, hoping that he would be able to determine how bad it was. Halfway there the lights came on and the tablet showed the computer rebooting, which gave him a small measure of relief as he continued to the bridge.
As soon as he entered he shut the alarms off, every system screaming for power that there wasn't nearly enough of as he went to the power systems console, his heart dropping when it wasn't able to provide more than half the power he had prior to the explosion. Having no need for them, he shut the shields off, the power balance returning to the other systems as he started a massive diagnostic on every system of the ship.
The temperature in Engineering was reading 3,000 degrees, quickly falling as he feared one of the plasma storage tanks had ruptured flooding the entire compartment. He was glad he hadn't been in there, but knew if that was the case he was in far more trouble than he could imagine. Alone it would take months to repair the ship enough just to get it back into FTL, not to mention what he would have to do in order to repair the storage system so that they would have enough power.
Just as the diagnostic for the generator came back telling him that one of them had been damaged or destroyed in the blast, he heard voices in the corridor as he sealed the bridge. He just wish he knew how to change the access code, hoping they didn't know what it was as he turned on the monitoring system to see two men and a woman looking at the door curiously as it finished closing.
"I thought we sealed the bridge." the woman said in a language Eli knew wasn't anything he had ever encountered before, the system however translating it easily as his eyes widened while the man entered the code.
"We did, there must be someone on board he knew it before arriving or cracked it afterward." the man replied as the door opened again.
Eli looked at the 3 of them surprised, all 3 of them equally surprised to discover him here. "Who are you?" Eli asked making the woman look at him curiously. He put the translator display on the primary screen and asked again as she looked at it and smiled seeing he had another monitor for himself.
"Commander Vici of the Avalonian Exploration Forces, lead engineer for project Destiny. Who are you?" she asked as he looked at the translation a little confused as it displayed both the Ancient writing of what she said as well as the English translation.
"Eli Wallace of Stargate Command from Earth. How long have you been aboard?" he asked as she sat down in the command chair while the two men went to different stations and began reviewing the diagnostics. He didn't stop them as he had no doubt they would overpower him in a confrontation.
"We were aboard when the ship launched from Avalon. The three of us used the stasis pods hoping to return once we had traveled far enough from home to return, something must have happened however." she said as Eli knew they had been aboard for a long time now.
"The processor had a malfunction freezing the wakeup command. Whatever just happened reset it and woke us up." one of the two men said looking at the logs. "It has been 62 million years." he told her as all of them were surprised once again.
"It seems we won't be returning home, tell me Eli Wallace, how long have you been aboard?" she asked him leaning forward.
"Two years, if you have been aboard that long you must be the Ancients." he said almost reverently as she laughed.
"I may have been in stasis a long time, but I assure you we aren't Ancient. Which Clan do you belong to?" she asked.
"Sorry, I didn't mean to imply you yourself were ancient. That is just what we call your people, assuming of course you are a member of the race who built this ship as well as the Stargates." he clarified for her.
"We are, but why would you not consider yourself one of us?" she asked even more curious.
"You have to understand a lot of information about your people has been lost to time. What we do know is your descendants left Earth millions of years ago, my people evolving into this form after their departure. Some Lanteans returned 10,000 years ago and assimilated into our society, but most either ascended or were killed by a plague." he told them as Vici closed her eyes for a moment and shook her head.
"Well, how much of the secrets of this ship have you discovered than, and why not wake us when you arrived?" she demanded.
"We had no clue you were here even. We are still learning about this ship, it's technology far beyond anything we could replicate right now." he said as she nodded.
"Seems like we are on the same position than Mr. Wallace, shall we work together to see what we can do about repairing this ship and returning to your home?" she asked him hopeful as he smiled.
"Yes, we can work together. I am sure there is a lot you can teach me about the ship and your people. We didn't even know that there were different clans of Ancients." he admitted as she chuckled.
"The Lantea Clan was just one of the 13 original clans." she said as he nodded realizing that must be the Lanteans they were familiar with.
