Eli worked in the dimly lit control center, going over the details of the Cryogenic chambers when an alarm began flashing on one of the panels. Before he knew what was happening he felt the ship drop from hyperspace as everything went dark. As soon as they entered normal space he felt an explosion rock the ship as alarms started blaring from nearly every panel. The rumble continued for 30 seconds before the consoles came back online and he was able to silence the alarms.
As soon as he saw the power reserves he knew that they were in desperate trouble. It was down to half of the reserve, the sensors indicating that the other storage tank had been ruptured when the power converter exploded. Besides the power to keep the stasis pods active, he didn't have enough power to keep the shields active while powering the hyperdrive. He had no idea where to start as the explosion had ripped another hole in the engineering compartment, even if he had access to it without a space suit.
For half an hour he secured every bit of the air he could, sealing the rooms and depressurizing them into the rest of the ship. He knew he was going to have to work quickly, as he scanned for the nearest star they could charge from.
As he was beginning to form a plan he heard the elevator activate and the door open before 3 people wearing weird uniforms stepped out. The one woman with them locked eyes with him, the surprise shared between them as they realized what this meant.
"Who are you?" she asked him in Alterran.
The computer recognized it instantly and displayed the translation for Eli. "I am Eli Wallace, from Earth." he answered before the screen between them displayed the translation in Ancient.
"I am Commander Vici of the Alterran Exploration Force. How long have you been aboard this ship?" she demanded as the three of them stepped out and entered the Command Center and began examining the logs for themselves.
"2 years. How did you get aboard?" he asked her.
"Ma'am, you need to see this." the blonde male at the engineering station said as he displayed the layout of the ship that highlighted the damage sustained to it.
"How is this possible? It was designed to last for thousands of years!" she exclaimed shaking her head.
Eli looked at the transcript of the translator and noticed that when she said where she was from translated to the same thing when he said he was from Earth. "Commander, when did you come aboard Destiny?" he asked her as she looked at the display between them for the translation.
"We were running final diagnostics aboard the ship when a malfunction launched it from Avalon. Because of the Stargate design, we knew it would take three years before we could dial home. So we set a wakeup protocol and entered cryo, but this could not have happened in three years." she said as the two men kept going through the diagnostics of what was wrong.
"If you have been aboard since it launched..." he trailed off as he had the system run the numbers. "You have been in cryo for the better part of 40 million years, give or take a couple." he said pulling up the map of the course Destiny had taken in that time. He realized something as he looked at it, and realized a major problem with their plans of survival.
Vici looked at the map in awe, seeing how many galaxies Destiny had explored since the launch. She also knew that it explained the state of the ship, as it had never been expected to operate this long. "This is absolutely amazing. We never dreamed it would capture all this data."
Eli however was looking at the map of the galaxies in its database and realized that the seed ships had all failed in either this galaxy or the one coming up as it was only half seeded. It seemed that this was the end of the line for this technology as he displayed the locations on the map and began looking at it as well as an idea began forming in his head.
"It seems we come from the same place Eli Wallace, or the translator is broken. How is the Alterran Race?" she asked as he sighed.
"That is a complicated story Vici. We may come from the same planet, but we are the second evolution of this form from Earth. The Ancients as we called them, left the planet 2 million years ago. Most of them ascended or died as far as I know. A few returned to Earth roughly 10,000 years ago, but they didn't establish a new colony or anything. Some of our people do possess the gene that the Master code was based off of, but not many." he told her before she nodded and noticed that the Ancients was a different word than what she was using.
"What do you call your species than?" she asked him.
"Human." he told her as he began to realize that the spoken version was very similar to how latin was pronounced. This however was a pregenitor language by several generations of change. Sure enough it was also a different word than Alterran that she called herself.
"Idan, retrieve the repair robots from our stasis chamber and begin the hull repairs. Vigo, complete diagnostics of the systems and supply manifest. It is going to be weeks before we can get underway again." she said before she looked at Eli. "Are you going to be any good at assisting in repairing the ship?"
Eli nodded before he spoke. "I am, but there is something else you should know." he said as he adjusted the display to the scans of the nearest star that showed the Drone Command Ship. "There is an automated defense system that has blockaded the gates and stars of this galaxy. In order to recharge we are going to have to fight our way through." he told her.
"Can they survive in the star itself?" Idan asked him.
"No, they cannot survive inside the star." he informed him.
"No issue then. We jump into the system within the influence of the star on a insertion trajectory that will allow us to recharge before slingshotting is into the system. After that we should be able to easily handle the ship, with proper repairs of course." he replied before he walked out.
"That is the issue ma'am. We have 10 weeks before we drop below necessary power levels. If we are going to have to fight I suggest we focus efforts on plasma storage, shields, weapons and engines. Those systems are all on the brink of collapse, especially since the explosion just damaged three of the FTL modules." Vigo said showing the damage.
"What repairs can we perform with the parts of the ship that are accessible. We have 5 robots for the hull, we need to find the subsystem repair bots in the storage bins." she said remembering what all they had repaired.
"I remember where they are, despite how long it has been." Vigo said as he walked over to the elevator as well.
"I need to inform my people of what has happened. Maybe they will be able to do something to help us once we regain FTL capability." he said.
"How are you going to communicate with them?" she asked.
"You don't know about the communication stones? It is your technology after all." he said as she shook her head no. "It swaps your consciousness across the vast reaches of the universe. I will take control of their body and be able to speak with the people there. They will also swap places with me, be able to see and hear what is going on here." he told her as she she nodded impressed. "We use a modified version combining your tech and our own, based off of readings of actual devices that survived the ravages of time."
"How long will it take?" she asked seriously.
"No more than an hour. Lock the door with a different code than the Master once I go in. I will call your name when it is time to let me out." he said seriously pointing at the room he had moved the stones to that was just off the Command Station.
"Very well." she replied as he entered and she entered the command to lock and seal the door before he sat down, activated the pedestal and set the stone down closing his eyes.
Earth- Homeworld Command
"I need to speak to General O'Neill. Wallace Delta 472567." he said giving his identification code as the officer nodded and grabbed the phone.
10 minutes later Jack O'Neill entered the office with a grim look on his face. "What's up Eli?" he asked.
"General, one of the power converters aboard Destiny exploded. It damaged a Stellar Plasma Tank, as well as three hyperdrive modules. Plan Alpha is a catastrophic failure, as we lost half of the power reserves and can sustain power levels for 12 weeks before Destiny is dead. However, in a bizarre twist of fate, 3 Ancients that were doing final diagnostics when it launched emerged from Cryogenic hibernation and are sure they can repair the ship to at least recharge within 10 weeks." Eli told him as Jack whistled shaking his head.
"So the odds of ever getting you home are dropping by the day." Jack said as he sat at the desk.
"Well sir, I think the reason they never awoke despite setting a wakeup command, is because of a glitch in the computer that froze part of its processor for the entire time it has been out there. Once the computer reset because of the power failure, I have been able to determine that the remaining 9 seed ships ahead of Destiny are dead in the galaxy it currently occupies, or the one we are on course to now. After that, there are no more gates unless we reverse course." Eli said as Jack sighed.
"I need an honest assessment Eli, what are your chances of repairing the ship in time. I know we can't dial in to even send supplies unless your FTL is online." he said knowing this wasn't going to end well.
"Give me a few days General. I think Commander Vici and I need to visit Atlantis to do some research in a few days." Eli told him bluntly. It was the only hope he could think of them ever getting home.
"Reconnect in 72 hours with this Commander Vici, we will have you setup in Atlantis." Jack said before radioing to have the connection severed.
