Walking through the hallways of this school brings back memories. So many memories I want to squash with my hands forever, crumble them to dust and forget about them forever. I also have good memories here of me and my goofy friends and how we used to run around in our own nerdy little bubble, but as much as high school years are glorified, I am about done with it already. The drama is too much for me. These walls and lockers feel like they are closing in on me trying to drown me or something. And the people here, most of them make me want to turn around and never come here again. Looking from side to side I see a lot of seniors that are back and they all just nod at me from a distance or plain ignore me which is fine by me, I don’t care. Some even look at me with mild interest. I am not surprised. I changed over the break. I filled into my clothes, grew out my hair and now it is long to the top of my ass, the lush length falls in wavy long strands of blonde goodness. My body is tighter and perkier. Like I said over the summer break I went two sizes up in my bra and my hips are rounder and my face thinner. I run to keep up my shape but I spent the whole summer as a life guard so that also explains the tan and strong muscles. This is different from how I was before, but at the same time not so different. Also my style has changed, I am more confident and willing to explore my closet and see the interesting pieces I can put together. Far away from where I am standing I see Emily, Emma and Erica. The three E’s. Come on, the three of them could not put their heads together and come up with a better group name? Talk about lazy. Inwardly, I scoff. I smother an irritated smile when I see them walking in my direction. This is the last thing I need today. I look for a quick way to escape before they pounce on me but I am too late. They surround me like blood hounds that smell their next prey. Their make-up faces peer at me in surprise and intrigue. “Oh, hi Elsa. For a minute I didn’t notice you there. Who knew the ugly duckling would turn herself around into something pretty.” Emily says gushing like she just gave me a compliment. I give her a tight smile. “What the heck…. I swear I didn’t know it was you... All this time you were hiding such a cute body under all those layers and layers of ugly clothes.” Emma says shaking her head in pity? “Erhmm thanks guys. It is good to see you all again.” I say in the most deadpan voice, obviously not meaning a word I say. I look at Emily who has a lot to say and I hold my tongue back from making a jibe at her about her and Hades breakup. But I chose to hold back. This is our first day back after a very long summer, we are now seniors. I rather she throws the first stone. Only then will I come for her. Her make-up is pristine, lips lined to perfection and hair pin straight. She might look okay on the outside but she is anything but okay. She just broke up with the hottest guy in school according to the entire female population and also the captain of the rugby team. A break-up of the power couple during the school year is terrible for her popularity. Emily is doing a good job at keeping her façade going, but just looking at her, I can tell she is fighting hard to keep it together. Hades dumping her is going to take her down the social ladder of the school if she doesn’t do something about it fast to stay at the top. I don’t care about school politics, which doesn’t mean I don’t know about it. I really do not have a choice about these things, not when you have a friend like Kim who yaps on and on about the hottest class gossip and the expose on the hot and not-so-hot list that has been going around. “So, we heard you worked as a lifeguard for most of the summer and spent the rest of it visiting your grandmother in France, how precious.” Emily sneers, her bubblegum pink painted lips spread tight in a constipated attempt of a smile. “Wait, how do you know that?” I turn in surprise. “There is something called the internet silly? And I have my sources.” Emily shrugs with a smug look on her face. She cannot be serious right now, stalker much? “A little creepy, don’t you think?” I roll my eyes, emptying my bag into my locker. I grab the books I need for first and second period and close them with a small bang, startling Emma, who shrieks dramatically. “Don’t flatter yourself Elsa, you know I spent the summer break visiting my father in Italy. Oh it was wonderful.” She sighs, clutching her chest. “Okay… thanks for filling me in.” I wait impatiently for them to take a hint and leave me alone. I glance at the huge clock in the middle of the hallway, and it shows I have ten minutes to make it to my class. “So, are you coming for the back-to-school party at Lucian’s later tonight?” Emma asks. Erica stands there chewing gum and furiously typing on her phone. “What party?” I ask pushing past them.
