Lorelei's Hope
The packed and buzzing restaurant stopped Lorelei from noticing how she drew the attention of almost everyone in the diner.
It was only her third month working as a waiter in the diner but she was still stuck trying to adjust to how fast paced everything was, and the ways men touched her inappropriately always made her rethink the job but she needed the money to afford the immense tuition fees of her Bachelor of Nursing program at the University of California.
Ever since the death of her father, she had lost everything her father set aside for her, the investments, cash were all gone because of her mother's careless gambling habits.
It made her end up in a diner after classes everyday bussing table to feed and pay bills in college.
Today was one of those days where she could use a hot dinner and a warm bed but different men at the tables she waited approached her to talk and most of the time, it was almost as though they say themselves at her tables to ask stupid questions.
It was as usual but something made her to wait back after her shift and listen to this certain guy that had begged her for a minute of her time.
"Can I know your name?" The mysterious bossy looking guy asked.
"I'm Lorelei." She was very careful about giving out her name, especially as she lived in such a cosmopolitan city like LA, but something about him and his tone made her to seat back and listen, he had said he had a proposal for her.
"Can I call you Lory?" He asked.
"Yeah, people call me that actually." She replied positively. She let the smile she reserved for touchy feely customers fall and genuinely smiled at this guy with his hair in waves curling around his nape.
"It's a nice name." He smiled back at her.
"You said you have a proposal for me, what is it about?" She wanted to go straight to the point instead of creating small talks with a stranger.
"Yes" he nodded "you have a really nice body" he looked into lory's eyes and his eyes raked her body to grab her attention "Your a*s got a lot of attention, your thin waist and long legs makes it easy for people to sin in their imaginations." He smirked at her naughtily.
Lory was shocked, he began so open, straight forward and didn't seem as if he cared about what she would think or say, he went all out in his speech about her body, but she was more intrigued than insulted.
She just sat back and stared at him waiting for him to continue, it intrigued her because no one has ever been this plain with her, she knows what goes on in their minds but she ignores it and no one dared to said it flat out to her face the way the guy did it.
"Your body is very attractive, in fact it's rare and perfect that it can get you out of this stress you bury yourself in and make you swim in money." He concluded and stared at her, waiting to hear her speak.
"How?" she had to ask immediately, she would do anything, if it would reduce her stress, and still let her focus on school and earn more.
"Would you like to be a dancer in my club?" The guy said in a monotone voice, Lory squinted at him and knowing nothing ever came for free, she asked him what sort of dancing.
"Stripping. I manage a high end club here in LA." Lory choked on air and began coughing immediately she heard the complete proposal. It was almost unbelievable.
"I'm Diego." He stood up and passed her his business card. It was a black stainless steel, gold embossed with his name, D. González on it. She slowly fingered his name, a little out of sorts.
"Whenever you make your choice, you can come to me." He said and left her dumbfounded.
Lorelei sat still on her seat for a while, before she sighed and stood up. She forgot about calling a cab or taking a bus as she was extremely poor and walked the whole way home, she had almost passed her house before she pulled herself from her thoughts and went inside the white painted suburban house.
Her mum wasn't home yet and she liked the peace it brought, she always wished to live alone and away from her mum since the death of her father, the woman had become a tormentor both in person and in actions.
Just as she was enjoying the tranquility and peace her day brought, her mum unlocked the door, keys jangling and walked in meeting Lorelei in the middle of making the last pack of ramen noodles in the kitchen cabinet.
She ignored the woman and continued preparing the noodles she wanted to have as dinner, from the open plan kitchen, she spied her mother wrangling her hands and her heart thumped.
"Do you have two hundred dollars? I'm in big shit." That was the first thing her mum said as she saw her. Lorelei continued to stir the pot, making sure the liquid didn't dry out, she didn't like her ramen dry.
"Really?, If I have two hundred dollars? Like, the wages of three days work? Why Are you so heartless? Are you even my mother?" Lorelei always hoped that one day her mum would come home and at least inquire about her day, how school was, or at least how work was, but no, her mum never asked.
"Don't give me that pity face girl, you either have it or you're too broke to have it. Don't look at me like I asked you to submit your only child." Her mum blurted out showing off bravado.
Lorelei let out a whoosh of breath in surprise, she should be used to this by now but her mother's selfishness keeps surprising her to no end.
"I do not have, mum." Calling her mum was like acid burning her tongue.
Her mum ignored her and grabbed Lory’s bag sitting on the couch, turned it over and took out all the cash she could find in it, about sixty-three dollars in cash and loose change.
"No!" Lory quickly turned off the stove, rushed to hold back her mum from taking all her money, but the older woman pushed her to the couch and left the house again.
Lory sat on the floor crying, it had never ever been so bad for her mother to openly steal her money, Lory occasionally lost little sums of money that she chalked up to her mother's as her tears flowed freely down her cheeks she stood up and closed her bag.

Her night was awful but at least her eyes closed and she was able to rest for a while before the sunlight creeped into her room through her blinds.
She quickly got ready for lectures and went off to school without breakfast. Her day went just fine, she had Chemistry practicals with a certain guy called Zac, he was the most intelligent in the class but he had weird kind of behavior, like a distant person who liked to distance themselves from others or something.
After all her classes she hurried to her job. That evening just before her shift ended, before she left she begged her manager to give her some extra shifts but He yelled at her and sent her away.
As she walked home again, not because she was in thoughts but because she had nothing with her, no cash at all, she was already starved dry, with nothing in the cabinet, the water bill had barely been paid for, all other utilities were backlogged, she only hoped the utilities company wouldn't sue very soon.
Before she reached home a thought stopped her steps, her thoughts returned to the one thing that plagued her thoughts since the previous day.
She took out the business card that she had carefully kept in her empty purse that held only another maxed out credit card. She put in the address on the card to her maps app and walked all the way to the club situated in the classy part of town.
The row of buildings on the street made Lorelei want to run back home and hide beneath her covers but with no money, debt on her credit card, she had to go out and work.
Lorelei stood at the entrance with shaky legs and tired face, she almost lost her breath due to walking such a long distance. When she entered the club she was seen by a beautiful woman with dark skin and shiny beautiful eyes. From the distance, she looked sweet.
"Hey girly, you look like you would fall any moment now." The sweet looking dark skinned girl said, her face scrunched up in pity for Lorelei.
"I...I'm looking for the boss." ones the whole word came out of her mouth she fell on the girl and she caught her and carried her to the club dressing room, the black girl gave her water and laid her down on a soft cushion.
She went to call for the boss and when she came back Lory was in tears, "Babe, the boss won't like you if you look like this." the black girl quickly cleaned lory's eyes "I'm Molly." She introduced herself.
"I'm Lorelei" lory said with a forced smile. She was tired and anxious, it didn't help that her skin was red from all the exertion she had put it through.
"Lovely name." Molly raised the tired Lory up, then helped her lean on a steel cabinet that was behind them.
"Thanks" Lory adjusted on the cushion "You can call me Lory.".
"Lory, I have been expecting you." The man from that day, Diego, walked into the small room.
"Hi." Lory didn't know exactly what to say, she hoped she wouldn't need to say anything and that the guy would know exactly why she's here.
"You will be starting your job." Diego said.
"Today" she asked in surprised.
"Of course not, the day after tomorrow" He informed the job comes with a new apartment and money for spa and shopping.Diego informed her.
"Hey D, you never gave me that!" Molly complained unhappily.
"Lory is coming from the lowest." Diego eyed Molly, then turned to Lory, "As you can see, she walked the whole way here." He blurted out his suspicion.
"How...how did you know that" Lory asked, feeling embarrassed.
"I just know." Diego replied vaguely.
"I'd love to accompany her" Molly said happily.
"Yes, Molly will go with you. She has amazing taste." Diego nodded and turned to Molly "Now get to work Molly." He said he had something to do and left them at the dressing room.
"Do you have where to go?" Molly asked.
"I do have a home but I don't want to go back there" Lory said sadly. She wanted to be as far way as possible from her mother.
"Oh dear, no wonder Diego offered you a house as your work package. Mine came with just a car, I had a house already." Molly explained lightly.
"He's not bad at all" Lory shrugged. She had been pushed to the wall, now she would take anything as long as it made her life easy.
"Yeah, so just rest for the night, when I'm done with my job we can go to my place together" molly suggested. Lory felt tears spring to her eyes, she could scarcely believe that someone was being so good to her on first meeting.
"That will be great, I'm so thankful Molly." Lory said with a sincere smile on her face since the day started.
"You're welcome." Molly said and stood up, before she could walk out of the dressing room completely she turned back and asked Lory "Do you even know the job you signed up for?" Molly raised a brow in question.
"Yea... Not exactly but I know it has to do with stripping? I don't know the degree of stripping I have to do though." She tried to confirm.
"Hmm, well not totally n***d except it's a special night, but at most we get to wear just lingerie sets, secondly we dance and romance, we could even create small talks to keep the customers coming back." Molly explained "My pole dancing isn't really up to par so I just do the romance part and get a lot of tips. One of the girls that danced before got involved in bad guys and drugs, they killed her."
"What?" Lory eyes widened in shock at that news.
"Calm down girl, don't just get yourself involved with assholes, that's an advice." Molly waved her off and left the room.
Lory sat back to think of everything molly had said, she loved to dance ever since she was a little girl, her dad was always her audience, she smiled at the remembrance. Straddling a pole wouldn't be so hard, she probably needed to be taught a few times.
After a while when she felt her body was rested enough she got up and watched the main club through the curtains, the place was wide awake, everyone was either dancing on the floor or drinking or making out at a corner, her roaming eyes found Molly, the girl was indeed hot and curved in the right places. She admired her confidence in her body and the way she walked, like she owned everybody's eyes and obviously d***s.
Lorelei went back inside and crashed on the cushion for the rest of the club hour until Molly came in and woke her up.
"Hey girly, let's get going." Molly tapped Lory a little.
Lory stood up without saying anything, she followed Molly out of the club as she noticed the black girl was now clothed.
********
The next day Molly and Lory went shopping after getting cash from Diego, she ditched classes and went on the shopping trip without double thinking, her top priority was to make this money that Diego had promised her of.
Lory made sure go buy a whole wardrobe, including her outfits for classes, molly asked why she would need those for, she explained that she was a nursing student and she didn't want to step foot in her mother's house for a while.
After the shopping Diego came to pick them up with a lot of bags, He drove to the new apartment he was giving to her as a job package and after she was settled in he left.
"This place is completely furnished" Lory looked around the open plan, one bedroom condo that overlooked a lot of apartment complexes around.
"Let me leave you to settle in too, see you tomorrow night" Molly hugged her and left immediately.
"Thanks for today!" Lory shouted behind her.
"Where should I start?" Lory asked herself as she looked at all the bahs of cloths, bags, shoes, jewelries, lingerie and bikini sets.
She sighed and began arranging, when she was done she took a tour around the small but beautiful house. The kitchen was the last place she looked into, it had all she would need to prepare meals and that made her even happier.
