Annabelle
"Oh my god, Elle?"
At the door, shrieking and jumping with excitement, was my childhood best friend. Maisie Johnston. Never in a million years would I have thought she was a Dragon as well.
"Tell me you are my roommate." I all but begged her. I had been a nervous wreck, wondering who I would be stuck sharing a room with. It wasn't that I wasn't a people person, but I was the only half-human in the school. News traveled fast, and I had already heard whispers of the 'halfling' as they called me. I had only been here three hours, for goodness sake.
Before I knew it, Maisie had flung herself onto me, toppling both of us onto the bed. "I am so glad we are roommates," She screamed in my ear, making me wince. I had forgotten how loud she could be. "Annabelle Quill, do you understand how much fun we are going to have the next four years!" Her excitement was palpable. Maisie had started getting her magic last month when she turned sixteen, and it looks like she was going to be powerful if you went off of how she emitted her emotions so clearly.
"God, Maisie, tone it down girl, you're giving me the shakes with all that excitement you're pouring onto me.
She sighed exasperatedly with me, which made me smirk. It was just like when we were kids. The last time I had seen her was when we were six. Once my parents told me who I was, they also told me about her, and we re-connected since we'd both be entering our first year at Draconian Academy together. Only now, she didn't need to hide her true self from me.
"Elle, listen. All three of the Princes' are officially in the school!" She shrieked again. I would definitely need to get used to it again. "The Crowned Prince is a Junior this year, and the Twin Princes' are Freshmen like us. Except they will rule the school. Have you seen them?" Her voice was a light sigh as she pretended to swoon on her bed.
I couldn't help but laugh at her antics.
There was a lot of uncertainty in my life right now. But one thing I knew for sure, though, it was about to be an exciting four years ahead of me. I would be getting more powers, learning how to strengthen them as well.
Not to make this about me, but what about me? It took all I had to keep my face straight and not cringe when I heard Jade's voice in my head. That was one of the things I definitely needed to get used to, having a dragon in my head at all times.
At least you don't think you are going crazy anymore.
That was true. Jade decided to wake up and make herself known three days before my sixteenth birthday two weeks ago. For a few days, I panicked, thinking I would need to be committed to an insane asylum. Instead, my mom made me think I needed to commit her when she told me it was just my dragon speaking to me. Then they said to me how special I was since most Dragons are dormant and never surface due to millenniums of suppressing not only our magic but also our dragons. Only the Royal Family are the only known Dragons able to shift.
And now us.
But why us, How can a halfling shift. There is no way we should be powerful enough, Jade.
You on your own, probably not. However, I am. In time you will understand Annabelle, trust me, and trust your judgment. Not everyone who seems trustworthy will be.
