I was late, the first day of class, and I am running late. I can't even make it for breakfast now. Damn Maisie, for not waking me.
I quickly threw on the uniform with a heavy sigh, which was pretty typical and definitely horrendous. For the top, we had a white button-down blouse with a red tie. For bottoms, the girls have the option of a black pencil skirt or a loose red and gray plaid skirt. There was also a suit jacket that went along, but thankfully it was optional. Otherwise, you'd have many melted dragons during the summer.
Picking up my backpack, I ran out of my room and made my way towards homeroom. I would get there with three minutes to spare if I hustled, and hustle I would, especially after the dean's warning at the Welcome class yesterday.
Many people were walking around the campus, some just hanging and chatting with friends, others making their way towards class. You could easily distinguish the First years, as we were mostly all speed walking into the building. I guess I wasn't the only one that was worried about being late.
Distracted, not looking straight ahead where I was going, I collided into a hard surface. My face screwed up, waiting for the impact of hitting the hard floor. After a few seconds, I noticed there was no impact, only warm hands gripping onto my waist.
My eyes shot open, and I saw the most brilliant sapphire blue eyes I had ever seen in my life. "I'm so sorry." I quickly muttered, stepping back from his embrace.
A smirk appeared on his face, two deep dimples gracing his cheeks. "Let me guess." His deep masculine voice wrapped around my body like a warm blanket. "You're a freshy and running late." Amusement was evident in his face.
I could feel my cheeks begin to heat, and I knew I was blushing. I hate blushing. Not trusting myself to speak, I just gave a quick nod, went to go around him, and went to class.
His hand shot out and grabbed my upper arm. Those sapphire eyes bore into mine. "What's your name?"
As soon as his hand let go of me, I started walking away. I had to get away from him. I didn't know why I was reacting this way. "Annabelle." I tossed over my shoulder, giving him a parting glance, keeping up my speed.
Finally making it to my assigned homeroom, I walked into the classroom. There were a few students already sitting down. Quickly I walked to the back of the room and sat.
The first warning bell rang, and students started to trickle into the class. I didn't know anyone other than Maisie in school, and sadly we had no classes together.
I looked around the room, groups of people forming and chatting while waiting for the teacher to walk in.
Most days, I didn't mind my upbringing. I had grown up happy and healthy, but days like today, seeing how everyone knew each other and I knew no one made me sad.
You have me, little one.
I smiled at Jade's voice. She was right, and I knew she would always be unconditional. After all, we were the same being. I just hated that I had to keep her hidden. My father stressed that enough times to tell me it was imperative.
Why Jade?
He wants us safe. If they find out a halfling has a dragon and another full-blooded Dragonkin doesn't, what do you think would happen to us.
An involuntary shiver ran down my spine. I would probably be hunted down and tested.
Ok, I shook my head softly. I need to stop watching scary movies. My life is not a movie. I will not be prey nor hunted down as such.
"Good Morning," an elegant woman walked in. She was slim and very tall, with hair as dark as a raven and eyes a deep chocolate brown. Maybe in her forties, and she had probably been a model in her younger years. "I'm Mrs. Crawford."
The door to the class opened up, interrupting her introductory speech. In walked two tall guys with dirty blonde hair. "Sorry, Mrs.," One said, a sheepish grin on his face that could let him get away with murder.
Once both heads turned towards the class, I understood why Mrs. Crawford hadn't said anything, not even a light reprimand. It was the Twin Prince's, Micah and Murdoch.
"Go ahead and take a seat, your highness." Her voice was low, respect seeping from her being.
Before I knew it, I had two sets of light blue eyes staring straight at me, recognition flashing in their face. I was not too fond of the attention and could feel a blush starting to form as they made their way towards where I was sitting. Lots of female eyes looking me over curiously, most with jealousy and hatred evident in their eyes.
Thankfully they walked past me, taking up the two seats empty behind me.
Keeping my head down, I tried my best to ignore all the stares. Ten more minutes of this torture, then I can run away and head to my next class, away from prying looks.
"What's your next class." One of the twins whispered from directly behind me. I didn't want to be rude, but I didn't feel comfortable chatting with him. He was a royal after all, and who was I? A halfling who had no idea of the proper protocol with the royals. I was bound to screw up.
"Art," I whispered back without turning or even raising my head.
I wasn't sure if they heard or if they decided to ignore me. Before I knew it, the bell rang. Quickly I grabbed my back and ran out of the room.
