"What did they want?" Micah asked, walking into the room, a towel wrapped around his waist.
"We are to encourage Malachi to choose the 'right woman.' Whatever the f**k that means." I couldn't stop the eye roll.
They had been even more persistent than usual. Malachi was only eighteen, with a few more weeks before he even turned nineteen and had a chance at finding his true mate. Yet all they talked about was him picking a mate like they didn't even care if he was happy or not, as long as they approved.
What happens if his mate doesn't have an active Dragon? Or if ours doesn't? Will they try and force a rejection? Noir asked grumpily. He had every reason to. With the lack of true dragons left, chances of a true mate were already slim. To even suggest that you ignore the fates and pick a mate instead was ludacris. I know I never would.
Walking out of the closet, fully clothed, thank god, Micah sat on his bed looking at me. His usually cheerful facade was gone, and now his face portrayed pure seriousness.
Many thought I was the serious twin simply because Micah was always joking around. What they didn't know was that it was all fake. Sometimes I worried that the darkness he loved to hide within him would consume him. And he was such a great actor and so good at hiding his feelings that it would be too late before people realized that something was wrong.
"What is it?" I asked him finally. His eyes flickered between their usual light blue color and black, letting me know he was having a hard time controlling Sable.
"Nothing. I am going to let Sable out see if he relaxes a bit." His voice was monotone as he got up and left the room we shared.
'Why is Sable trying to take over Micah?' I asked Noir. After a few minutes of silence, his gruff voice finally bounced around my mind.
We know who Malachi's true mate is. And no, I won't tell you who. Sable is upset because if Malachi rejects her due to unavoidable circumstances, she may die.
To say I was shocked was an understatement.
'Why can't you tell me who it is?' I asked him. I felt him slowly retreat from my mind. His way of letting me know he would not tell me more. Instead, all he did was leave me with a million questions.
I knew all dragons were connected to some extent and could connect with other dragons as long as they had met the human. So we must know who Malachi's mate is. But what circumstances could lead her or her dragon to die from just a rejection.
Sure, it was rarely done but not unheard of, especially in the past when all dragons were present. So what was so different in her case?
Not that I wanted him to reject her. Hell, I would do all I could for him to keep and accept his mate. There was no more significant way of ensuring happiness than a true mate. Not to mention when two true mates sealed their bond and formed the eternal flame linking their life sources together, their powers and strength grew. That was something that would be more than beneficial for the future King and Queen.
Why would mom and dad want to mess with that?
I spent the next half an hour trying to dissect Noir's words and find out why our parents would want any of us weaker? They may be on Malachi's case right now with his birthday coming up, but they have also mentioned both to Micah and me that we should pick mates as well.
