** MASON’S POV **
For the next few hours my dad explains everything to me. He informs me that there’s no doubt that I’m a shifter also and that my wolf was subdued and basically drugged my whole life by the medicine the “school “ had me on. He explained that wolfsbane was poison to my wolf and that there was a chance my wolf had died or was too affected by the meds to awaken. Wolfsbane also made my wolf to weak to heal myself.
“That’s why they did all those tests on me. They were trying to see how weak my wolf was based on how quickly I healed.” I say and my dad looks so upset with himself.
He tells me that Amanda was actually a nurse and it was her assignment to get close to me so she could make sure I took the medicine. I wasn’t surprised. He even handed me a folder with pictures of her at work and her having s*x with Dr Guile’s. I would make sure she paid for lying to me and forcing me to go through all the pain.
“So what now?” I ask him and he just shrugs.
“Now we wait to see if your wolf awakens or not.” He says and looks sad.
“The voice…” I blurt out and my dad jerks his head up to look at me.
“What voice?” He asks me in confusion.
“The voice I keep hearing in my head. I thought I was going crazy but it’s my wolf.” I say and expect to find my dad looking at me with concern but he’s smiling actually smiling.
“Finally you figured it out. Nice to meet you officially I’m Maddox.” My wolf says in my head and it makes me chuckle. My dad is still smiling and I smile back.
“It is my wolf. His name is Maddox but I don’t think he’s strong enough to shift yet.” I tell him and he nods.
“I saw you eyes go black for just a moment this is fantastic news. When Maddox is strong enough he’ll let you know.” Dad says and we talk a bit longer before he heads to bed.
I’m to amped up to sleep so I grab the slippers that were left for me and fit perfectly and decide to try to locate the kitchen to make some warm milk or something to help me sleep. I slip out of the room and begin walking towards the staircase. It’s so quiet. I know it’s late so I try to be silent as I make my way down the hall and look at how beautiful the place is. It’s open and there’s so many windows letting the moonlight show through. The double staircase is elegant while still natural with a railing made of redwood. Photos and pictures line the walls and they’re all of the pack members throughout the centuries. Right before I hit the ground floor I spot a photo of a young Teagan and her best friend. She is laughing and has her head tossed back. It’s pure joy on her face. Suddenly I hear two voices talking quietly and they become louder as I head through the dining room/meeting hall towards the kitchen. The light is showing under the door and I start to retreat so I’m not interrupting when I recognize Teagan’s voice.
“Why are you two still awake?” Teagan asks.
“Couldn’t sleep. You just getting in?” A female asks and I hear the sound of a chair being pulled out.
“Yes.” Teagan replies the exhaustion clear in her voice.
“Find anything?” Another female asks and now I’m really listening.
“Yes. There’s no question that the fire was intentional and it was started at the back patio of Xavier and his sons home. It was set to burn down the house.” Teagan says in anger. “We were only able to track them to the tree line because of the fire. We know there were three of them and two were shifters but not our pack members and only one was a rogue. The third was human.”
“Did they set the woods on fire to cover their scents so we couldn’t track them?” The first female asks as one of them gets up and starts moving around.
“No. It seems the house collapsed on the one side lighting the dry grass and shrubs on fire and it spread to the tree line and into the woods.” Teagan explains.
“How badly we’re the woods burned?” The same female asks.
“Could of been a lot worse if someone hadn’t seen the smoke and alerted the guard and Skylar.” Teagan says and I hear her take a sip of something. “We’re very lucky the pack got it put out as quickly as they did. Unfortunately Xavier’s house was already consumed.”
It’s silent for a few mins before one of the females asks a question I really want to hear the answer to.
“So we heard you jumped into the second story window and then jumped out with Xavier’s son on your back. You saved his life.” She says. “What’s going on there Tea. The same guy you told me had been raised in the facility and was with the b***h right?” It’s silent again before Teagan replies in a quiet voice.
“Yes it’s true and I don’t know what’s going on.” She says. “I feel this pull towards him. I get so angry just thinking of that b***h touching him and it’s a cross between jealousy and protectiveness.”
“Go on.” One of the females says and you hear the knowing in her voice. I hear a chair push back and one of the ladies starts pacing. Moments later I catch her scent and know it’s Teagan. She paces back and forth quietly for a few before starting to talk and I feel like I need to give her the privacy she already believes she has.
“I just crave him. His scent drives me crazy and I’ve done things I wouldn’t ever do.” Teagan says getting upset. “I let him see my wolf, I warned him about that b***h’s true intentions, and then tonight I rescued him. I didn’t think about anything other than he was in danger and I jumped into the window of a burning house, and back out. I wasn’t thinking of my own safety or what would happen to the pack if their Alpha was killed.” She sounds so guilty and it makes me realize she’s right. She’s responsible for the whole pack and I’ve been distracting her. I haven’t been fair. I have to steer clear of Teagan. I can’t keep distracting her. I turn and head back upstairs and crawl into bed. It takes me hours to fall asleep cause all I can think about is Teagan.

The next morning I wake up and get ready to go help the clean up crew who are cleaning up after last nights fire. When I enter the sitting area my fathers waiting and offers me some coffee. I sit across from him and drink the coffee.
“So son how are you feeling about everything?” He asks and I smile at having someone truly care about me and my feelings.
“I’m still processing it I think but I’m ok.” I reply. “ I knew something was different when I was at the facility so it all makes sense now.” Xavier nods but it’s obvious something else is on his mind. “Alright spill.” I say and he laughs.
“So observant. I need to talk to you about your first shift. It’s coming and the first time isn’t pleasant. The best place to be is out in the woods away from people and furniture.” He says and smirks. “Now their are preshift signs that warn you it’s going to happen so you need to pay attention to how you’re feeling.”
“What signs?” I ask him
“Your temperature will rise so you’re running a fever. You will start to feel on edge and angry for no reason. The number one sign is the fever. If you start to feel cold and shivering but your forehead is hot you need to get to the woods and have your wolf mind link mine.” He informs me and I agree to pay close attention. I’m going to the cleanup with my dad but first we head down to the dining room for breakfast. We walk in and of course I look for Teagan but she’s not there. My dad heads up to greet Teagans mother and I follow.
“Mason it’s good to see you were unharmed in last nights fire.” She says and I bow to her. “Oh dear we’re not that formal here.”
“Thank you Alpha.” I reply and she gives me a warm smile.
“We had better eat so we can head out to the cleanup.” My father says and I see him and her lock eyes and something passes between them that I don’t recognize.
“I’m going to order. Thank you again Alpha and I’ll meet you at the table father.” I say and don’t wait for them to respond before heading over to the food tables. I grab a tray and start down the line before my tray is full of eggs, bacon, sausage etc. I turn to walk to the only empty table and start to eat. I finish my breakfast and dad still hasn’t joined me. I glance up and see both he and Alpha mother have disappeared. What the hell? I stand up and turn my tray in before heading for the patio door leading out back. Maybe that’s what he thought I met. Right as I gripped the handle I felt her enter the dining room. I turned and my goodness how does she look more beautiful each time I see her? She looks around the dining room obviously looking for someone and when her gaze lands on me she smiles. She starts towards me and I’m surprised. She’s wearing a pair of jeans that shows off her perfect ass, her boots are definitely worker boots and she has a burgundy shirt under her burgundy and black flannel. Her reddish brown hair is pulled up in a messy bun. She’s obviously ready to work but she still takes my breath away.
“Good morning Mason. How’d you sleep?” She asks with a mischievous sparkle in her eyes and a smirk on her face.
“Not as well as I could have but last night was stressful.” I reply and she nods in agreement.
“Are you headed over to the cleanup?” She asks me and I nod. “Perfect do you mind company on the walk over?”
“Not at all.” I reply and open the door so she can walk out first before following.
“Great thanks.” She replies. As we head past the pool and through the backyard to the woods she greets everyone we pass. Some of the children rush up to get hugs from her and the pure happiness both she and the children have is obvious. “Sorry about that.” She says smiling as we step into the woods and we’re surrounded by peace.
“Don’t be. It’s inspiring to see how much the pack members truly love and respect their Alpha and you them.” I tell her and her face lights up with pride and happiness.
“Thank you that’s the nicest thing anyones ever said to me.” She tells me. We walk in silence for a few mins and just enjoy the peace and quiet. “I’m sorry I didn’t check in with you last night and see if you were alright. I ended up at the investigation longer than I intended.”
“Please don’t apologize. You saved my life and I appreciate how seriously you’re taking this investigation.” I quickly say and I catch her scent and it takes every ounce of self control I have to not wrap my arms around her and kiss her so I can taste her sweet mouth. Whoa where did that thought come from?
The rest of our walk is quiet and it’s not long before we arrive at the cleanup.
“There you are sister . We need you to go over some things we found.” A guy who looks a lot like Teagan walks up and he has to be her brother. He smiles at me holding his hand out. “Hey there I’m Tyler and you must be Mason.” I shake his hand and look at Teagan who is actually blushing.
“I am. Good to meet you Tyler.” I reply and then look around and see the charred remains of the only home I’d ever had. I turn away and catch Teagan looking at me in concern so I shoot her a smile to let her know I’m ok before I look at Tyler. “I came down to help so put me to work.”

After working the rest of the day with the cleanup crew we had gotten everything cleaned up and hauled away. You could still see the singed trees and foliage but the remaining parts of our house were gone and it was ready to be built on. I was surprised when about a half hour after we got to the site and started working my dad came down with Teagan’s mother and they both immediately jumped in to help. I watched as everyone started to leave and slowly got up and headed into the woods myself. A few minutes later I felt my body temperature spike and I kept walking. I kept feeling more warm and I was clammy.
“Find a clearing and lie down quickly.” Maddox orders and I do as he says. Suddenly I feel my bones breaking and moving and thick dark black fur starts to grow out. Holy s**t it’s painful.
“AHHHHHHHHHHH” I cry out not being able to hold it in and then just as fast as it started the pain disappears and I am on all fours. I feel the breeze blow through my thick fur and I want to see my wolf.
“Simple enough” I hear Maddox’s deep voice and then he takes off and it’s incredible as he dodges or jumps any obstacle that we encounter. He finally stops at the shoreline and we walk to the water looking down. Holy s**t were huge. Our fur is jet black with the moon almost making it look blue. There’s a white patch on my chest and the tip of my left ear. We look amazing. “Like there was ever any question.” Maddox scoffs.
“Maddox I’m so sorry for what they did to you.” I say sincerely. “I’m so sorry it took so long for me to figure out what they were doing. What that b***h was doing. I promise we will make them all suffer. Especially her.”
Suddenly we turn towards the tree line where we heard someone or something approaching and hear a beautiful voice.
“Nope that b***h is mine.” Teagan steps out of the shadows with fire in her eyes.
