Nihil
Everyone could hear mother’s screams as she pushed out her fourteenth pup. I sat beside my window, looking outside, wondering if our alpha father would finally get his son. Melanie, my twin, was outside making out with a new boy. She was sadistically trying to open our link so she could run another thing in my face. I am not sure who it could be. By now she had made out with every person willing in the pack.
In just an hour, Melanie and I will turn fourteenth and we will get our wolves. Maggie, one of the middle sisters, ran into my room. “Father wishes to see you.”
I nodded. And stood up from my chair. I left the small attic room and slowly started down the steps. I know father was already mad if he wanted me. The sisters lined up in the alpha suite as I walked in. Their eyes are watching me. The older ones watched me with guilt, and the younger ones with curiosity. Some have not seen me in a long time. I am rarely let out of my little room. I finally noticed mother’s screams had stopped. Before I could ask, they pushed me into father’s home study.
I looked at the man, who I looked nothing like, where he was tall, blond and with hazel eyes, features all my sisters had except me. I was shorter but built like a tank. All my sisters were petite, and I was short and stout. I had black hair and gray eyes. Before father could look at me, I lowered my head. Father hated looking at me. It seemed he hated everything about me, which is why he made me stay in my room most times. They took me out to do light training, which was my sisters kicking my butt. Because if I fought back, father would punish me. I could go to school and to the library. But I had to go with my sisters, and I was never allowed to talk to anyone. Punishment was harsh if I broke the rules.
I heard the ice in his cup click against the glass as he must have finished it, and I heard it hit his desk. “You are a curse on my house,” he finally said.
Mother had another girl. This is not surprising, because this has been the norm since I could remember. Me standing in his office, as he blames me for the newest daughter. I did not open my mouth because I knew what was going to happen next. And sure enough, the insults started flying. I tuned them out. It took years, and I was done shedding tears for him. It was the sting of pain on my face that snapped my neck that brought me back to reality.
“I should have killed you at birth, but your mother begged for your life. I don’t know why. She and I both know you are nothing but a drain on this household. You can’t even do chores right. I can’t make you an omega, but you are no daughter of mine.”
He threw a little box at me. I looked down at it in my hands. “Put that on, now, and if you ever take it off, I will kill you!”
I opened it up, and it was a necklace with a weird black stone. “PUT IT ON!” He shouted.
I grabbed the chain and shoved my head through it. There was this anxiety that had been building in me all day, and it felt like it was just going to explode soon. But as soon as the chain hit my skin, it eased. I took the black stone and put it to my eye. Father slapped it out of my hand.
“Never show that to anyone. Now go to your room. And just so you know, since you cursed me, I have now cursed you.”
I didn’t understand, but I left his office. “Do you want to see baby?” Maya, one of my little sisters, asked.
“No, mother and father would not like that. I will go back to my room.”
“Why is father so mean to you?”
Maggie slapped the back of Maya’s head. “Do you want father mad at you too?”
“No,” she whispered.
“Don’t talk to Nihil.”
I shook my head and left the alpha floor and started up the stairs. “What is your wolf's name, Nihil?” Melanie stopped me.
I turned to look at her. It must have been the clueless look on my face. Because she threw her head back and laughed. “You didn’t get a wolf! That means father is right, you are cursed.”
I sighed, maybe she was right. Not only am I cursed, but unwanted. I turned and went back to my room.
