POV Lucas
The shock hit me harder than I thought possible. Brenden’s smug face was the last thing I saw before I was blinded with red. “You son of a –” Jackson shouted before lunging at Brenden.
I couldn’t get to Jackson fast enough while I tried to catch my breath. “Lucas!” I jumped when my name echoed through the empty halls. I turned to see Mason clutching hold of Ophelia for dear life. “Please tell me this isn’t happening.” He whispered with a cracked voice.
I clenched my jaw and shook my head. “I wish I could.” Everything was falling apart and it was all because of him. The boy who can’t help but be selfish. I can’t help thinking about what Thomas and Iassac told us last year. How my brother was starting to act strange…peculiar. Like everything around him was as sour as lemons. The why, however, was still a mystery to all of us. All of us accept Brenden himself.
Now there is no second guessing it. Issac and Thomas were right. Brenden has lost it.
“I’ll kill you!” Jackson shouted, reminding me to focus on the situation at hand.
I raced over to Jackson and yanked him off of Brenden before slamming my foot into the side of Brenden’s skull. “Kill! Kill the traitor!” My wolf howled. “Our mate is hurting!” Mate?
“What?! How is that possible?” I asked, mistakenly out loud as Brenden groaned through the pain Jackson and I had no problem dishing out to him.
“It may have never happened before, but it isn’t impossible for us to continue our bond with Ophelia without Brenden’s involvement. However, he better count the hours before his death. I will end him!” My wolf shouted.
I turned towards Ophelia and her lifeless form still made my heart ache. Focusing on her and only her, I was able to find what my wolf continued to cling onto. The bond…. It was still there. Thank the goddess. My wolf was right! “Let me go!” Jackson slammed his elbow into my side and I growled irritably.
“Get a hold of yourself! We need to get Ophelia to the hospital. The guards will deal with Brenden. She needs us now. Focus on that.” I heaved and he stopped struggling.
“What do you mean? He stole our mate from us.” Mason said. “For once in my life I agree with Jackson’s rash actions. Kill him!”
“No, he didn’t. My wolf just told me she is still connected to us. We can still keep our bond with her. Can’t you still feel the sparks?” His eyes grew before he nodded in agreement. “Exactly. We let our rage influence us. Now, Jackson, call the guards. Mason, head to the hospital. I’ll…I’ll do the hard part.” I instructed. We didn’t have time to drag this out. Who knows what happened to Ophelia. Just because only one of us rejected her, doesn’t mean she still didn’t feel the pain of a second rejection. I don’t want to find out too late because we took too long to act.
“And what would that be, oh glorious eldest brother?” Jackson grumbled.
“I’m going to talk to our parents.” I sighed heavily.
Mason nodded and raced out the school with Ophelia close to his chest. I glanced down at Brenden and he was completely knocked out. Good. “Jackson….” I pressed and he nodded.
“They will be here in a few minutes. I will wait with him so you can get to our parents.”
“No you will not. Go get Ophelia’s things. I will wait for the guards. You have done enough for now.”
“Oh, I’m just getting started!”
“Exactly. Make sure I don’t have to finish it.” I warned.
He hesitated for a moment before groaning and heading towards Ophelia’s classroom. I turned towards the vending machine and grabbed a bottle of water. I was happy it was nice and cold when I pulled it from the slot. Sauntering over to my so-called brother, I opened the lid and poured its contents over his head. He gasped as he tried to pull away from the cold water. As he tried to stand, I rammed my foot into his chest and he heaved before glaring up at me. “What the hell?!” Brenden snapped.
“I should be asking you that question. What made you think it was appropriate to reject our goddess given mate without consulting the rest of us first?!”
“What made you think it was appropriate for the goddess to give us someone else’s leftovers?!”
“Enough of this! I will give you one chance to change your mind.”
“Or what Lucas? You going to kill me?” He chuckled darkly and shook his head before sitting up and laying his arm over his knee. “Trust me, you will not win this. I’ve done my part and now all I have to do is wait. I don’t care what you three do anymore. I’ll get what is rightfully mine while you wallow with the peasants.”
I rolled my eyes and stood upright. “You are lost, brother.”
“I’m sure that retort should be the other way around.” He growled. I stared at him, hoping this was one big prank while I heard the footsteps of some warriors we had stationed around the school approaching the pair of us.
“Guards. Take Brenden to the cells, make sure he is chained.” I shook my head and started to turn towards the exit when Brenden thought it wise to lunge at me. One of the warriors jumped in between us and dosed him with an alpha-sized amount of wolfsbane.
“You will regret this.” Brenden growled before his head lulled and his body went limp.
I sighed and waved the guards on “Make sure he is detained, and he is not to have any visitors until I, or my father, says otherwise. If anyone disobeys this order, your fate will be the same as his.”
“Yes alpha!” They chorused.
The drive home wasn’t short of a load of questions from the people I had to speak with. Our parents. “Lucas! Mason just stormed into the house with Ophelia. The girl who joined the pack only a year ago. What happened to her and why is he so territorial?!” My dad shouted.
I rubbed my eyes and turned onto the main street towards the packhouse. “He didn’t tell you?”
“He said you would, dear.” My mother hummed, doing her best to calm the situation.
“And I will do just that. I should be home soon.”
“You have a lot of explaining to do young man.” Dad growled.
“Yes sir.”
“That girl has gone through enough pain. I hope to the goddess something worse hasn’t happened.” Mom added with a sigh.
I rolled my eyes even though I was by myself as I turned toward the packhouse. “I know.” I pressed.
“R-right. As long as you know.” She added. What? Did she think I was going to push back on this?! I just put my brother in the dungeon and Mason just raced toward the alpha hospital with the new girl and finally all four of us are cutting class. There was no way I was going to talk our way out of this.
“I do. I’m just not too sure you will like what I have to say.” I mumbled through the link, knowing they’d both still hear it.
I finally made it back to the packhouse and parked my car in the garage. I didn’t even make it ten feet into the main floor before I was dragged into the alpha’s office by none other than my mother. It was quite comical to see her small frame pulling me along, but it immediately reminded me of my mate and made me chuckle. “This is no laughing matter Lucas.” She huffed irritably.
“Of course.” I said, biting back another laugh. She huffed before pushing through dad’s office door and plopping me in one of the chairs facing him.
“Start talking.” Great. He’s in alpha mode.
“Alpha Reggie.” I said, giving him the respect he deserves. I bowed once before rising my head and telling them our story.
Dad and mom sat there patiently without interrupting me once. It was nice to get all of this off my chest, but I was hoping they could have met our mate on better terms. To be honest, I’m more concerned about them thinking our mate is weak.
“Alright. Is that all?” Dad asked again.
“Yes, Alpha.”
He nodded and stood from his seat, rounded his desk and leaned back on the mahogany wood. “To have a mate that is also an omega will be challenging for the four of you, but I never thought Brenden would go against the moon goddess.” He rubbed his face and for the first time ever, I saw a tired man looking back at me. “I swear, something is off with that boy.” He growled.
“So how do we fix this?” My mom said. “She’s gone through enough. I want to make sure all five of you are safe. Including you i***t brother that we will deal with shortly.”
“All five of us? So, you do approve of her?” I asked expectantly.
“Of course we do, son. Your mother loves Ophelia and she has done nothing but become a star wolf around the territory. However, we cannot put your brother in the dungeon because he decided to reject her.” Dad added.
“That’s…not the full reason.”
“So there is something you left out?” He asked curiously.
“A bit…. Like you said. Something is off with that boy.”
“Speak.” He growled in warning and I showed my neck in submission before finishing the story.
