{Maisie’s POV}
[Reader Discretion is Advised! This chapter contains themes of a dog attack!]
I finished my bath, I soaked for what felt like forever and when I cleaned up after myself I made my way to my room, drying off and getting dressed. My natural curls began to fall wildly around me. Thankfully I remembered to get my hair care products when we were in town. I put in my oils, and creams, making sure to comb out my hair properly with a wide tooth comb, before scrunching it. Once I was done, I used a shirt to plop it, that way it wouldn’t get too messed up when I went to sleep. I looked through the room, finally finding my underwear, and pulled on some black lacy ones. I dug through the other drawers until I found a tank top, and a pair of shorts. I dressed myself before turning down my bed and hopping in. I laid down, pulling a pillow up beside me and cuddling up to it. Finally allowing myself to fall asleep, and for the first time in a while, I had a peaceful dream, with no nightmares to haunt me.
The next morning I woke up to the smell of coffee, and bacon, I sat up in the bed, stretching out my tired muscles. I threw my legs off the side of the bed, and grabbed a silk, sage green robe, that Angelo had gotten me yesterday. I tied the robe, and took down the shirt around my head, allowing my kinky curls to fall down around me. I shook out my head, fluffing them up and looking in the mirror. I found myself worried about my dark circles, and how much my freckles showed when I didn’t have on at least a little bit of makeup. I shook it off, telling myself that it didn’t matter. I slipped on some black slippers and made my way down into the kitchen.
I noticed on the way down towards the kitchen that, jazz music poured through the halls, echoing across the hardwood flooring. It was beautiful, the kind of music that you could sway to, and lose yourself to the rhythm. As I turned the corner into the kitchen, I could see Angelo swaying side to side, as he was busying himself with making breakfast. Then I heard it, a beautiful sound that I never thought I’d hear. He began singing, his voice was deep, melodic, and soft as he sang along to some old jazz. I carefully made my way to the island, leaning onto the counter as quietly as possible, trying to get closer. I wanted to hear more, and I knew that if I made my presence known, he’d become the same quiet man he was before. He’s just now beginning to open up, and actually talk to me. The last thing I want is him shutting down again. He was swaying with the music, and I couldn’t help but sway along with him, as I closed my eyes and let the melody, and his voice soothe me.
Suddenly the singing stopped, and I heard metal clammer to the ground. “W-When did you get here?” He asked.
I opened my eyes, looking over him, he wore a shocked, possibly even angry expression on his face. Something that I’d never seen him send to me. “I-I just got down here.. I heard you singing, and didn’t want to bother you..” I said, backing away from the counter. Da**** Maisie, you just had to invade his privacy.. why can’t you ever stop screwing up? You’re too old for this.. to be messing up everything, all the time. If you’d said something when you first came in, he wouldn’t be angry right now.
He turned around without saying a word and picked up the skillet that he had dropped on the ground. Once he was ducked behind the counter, I took my opportunity and ran out the door, making my way down the beach, my slippers flying off as I ran. I knew what usually happened next.. and it was never a good thing for me.
“Maisie!” I heard him calling after me, I turned back to see him running out the front door, and onto the porch.
I kept running, as fast as my legs could carry me, until I found myself near a cluster of palm trees. That’s when I saw it.. my biggest fear, the one thing that I actively avoid. A huge dog was down a little ways on the beach, staring me down. I turned, quickly scurrying back towards the house, but I could hear the dog’s snarls, and barks as it got closer to me, beginning to quickly catch up. “No.. No!” I shouted, sprinting as fast as I could. My heart pounded in my chest, and I could barely breathe, but it didn’t matter, I wouldn’t stop until I was safe.
Then I felt it, sharp piercing pain on the back of my calf, I fell, landing on the ground with a thud while the dog sunk its teeth deeper into my leg. It pulled back, lunging now for my face, I held up my arm, and it chomped down on my forearm, blood beginning to pour from the wound already. Its teeth were long, and sharp, and I could only scream as it tore some flesh away from my arm. “Help!” I screamed, trying hard to keep my arms up to keep the dog away from my face and neck.
A gunshot rang loudly in the air, causing my hearing to become muffled. The dog let go, running away, then I could see Angelo, holding a gun and running my way. “Maisie.. Maisie are you okay?” He asked, dropping to his knees beside me.
I nodded. “I am now..” I whimpered, looking down at my leg and arm. They were both bleeding profusely, with chunks of flesh torn away from the bone. “I-I think I need a doctor.. a doctor in a hospital..” I said, staring down at myself.
He picked me up bridal style and carried me to his car, setting me down gently, and buckling me up. “Don’t worry Mase.. I’ll get you to the hospital, it’s on the other side of the island, so here..” he said pulling his shirt off and tearing it in half. “Use this to stop the bleeding!” He finished, handing me the two halves of the shirt. I sat for a moment, just ogling his toned chest and abs, before taking the two pieces, wrapping one around my leg, and the other around my arm carefully.
