{Angelo’s POV}
[Reader Discretion is Advised! This chapter contains themes of a dog attack!]
I forgot how timid and flighty people who have been abused could be. Margo is so strong now, that I had it in my head that all trauma survivors are that way. I must have mistaken her kindness, her sarcasm, and her confidence, for moving past her trauma, and now I’ve gone and scared her off. I turned off the stove, and set aside the food safely before running out after her.
“Maisie!” I shouted, running out onto the porch and looking back and forth down the beach, finally seeing her. She turned back to look at me, before flipping back around and taking off further down the beach.
She made it to a group of trees, then she froze.
A massive dog was down a little ways on the beach, staring her down. She turned, quickly scurrying back towards the house, but I could see the dog closing in on her. “No.. No!” She shouted, sprinting as fast as she could. Her eyes were closed, as she ran back towards me, she was terrified. I kept running, trying to catch up to her, to help her.
Then I saw it, the dog launched at her, sinking its teeth into her calf. She fell, landing on the ground with a thud while the dog sunk its teeth deeper into her leg. It pulled back, lunging again for her face, she held up her arm, and it chomped down on her forearm, blood beginning to pour from the wound already. She screamed as it tore some flesh away from her arm. “Help!” She screamed, trying hard to keep her arms up to keep the dog away from her face and neck.
I pulled out the gun that I kept strapped on my ankle, shooting it up into the air. The dog let go, running away, and I quickly closed the gap between me and Maisie. “Maisie.. Maisie are you okay?” I asked, dropping to my knees beside her.
She nodded. “I am now..” she whimpered, looking down at her leg and arm. They were both bleeding profusely, with chunks of flesh torn away from the bone. “I-I think I need a doctor.. a doctor in a hospital..” she said, staring down at herself.
I picked her up bridal style and carried her to my car, setting her down gently, and buckling her up. “Don’t worry Mase.. I’ll get you to the hospital, it’s on the other side of the island, so here..” I said pulling my shirt off and tearing it in half. “Use this to stop the bleeding!” I finished, handing her the two halves of the shirt. I took off towards the hospital, as I saw her take the two pieces, wrapping one around her leg, and the other around her arm carefully.
I drove like a madman to the hospital, making it there in record time. I leapt from the car and ran around to her side, flinging open the door and lifting her up bridal style in my arms. I ran inside, holding her to my chest. “We need help..” I said, looking towards the nurses station.
A nurse came out, looking over Maisie. “What happened?”
“She was attacked by a dog!” I said, panic still oozing out of me. It was my fault, I brought her here thinking that she would be safe, and happy, now she’s injured.
She slid one of her arms across the back of my neck, and the other up the opposite side of my neck interlocking her fingers together. “Angelo.. breathe..” she said softly, her voice was calm, seductive even.. but not in the usual se**** way.. in an alluring, and persuasive way. She was trying to calm me down, and I had to admit it was working. Her hands, her arms, her, against my skin, it was like an ice cold bath as she turned her face towards me, smiling. “I’m okay, just probably need a rabies shot, and possibly some stitches, you need to calm down.. your heart is beating like crazy.” She said, sliding two fingers to my neck, feeling my pulse racing. Her movements, her hands on me, it didn’t nothing for the racing I felt in my chest. It felt as though a thousand horses had begun a race within me.
“Okay sir, bring her this way!” The nurse said, pulling us both out of this moment, back to the task at hand.
I carefully carried her into the room that the nurse ushered us into, and laid her on the bed. Soon, a doctor walked in, holding a crate full of needles, and other medical equipment. “Alright Miss, the nurse tells me that you’ve had a dog attack? You’re in need of rabies shots, and possibly some stitches, your words right?” He said, smirking down at her as he sat down the items.
“Sorry, I’m a doctor, so I know the usual routine for things like this, I was just trying to calm down Angelo, he was panicking.” Maisie said, turning back towards me.
He nodded, grabbing a syringe, “Well, I hate to say you’re right when it comes to this, but you are. You’ll need a few shots around any bite marks, and depending on how deep the wounds are, you’ll have to have stitches.”
She nodded, untying the torn shirt I had given her from her arm and leg. The doctor looked over her wounds, by the end of it, she ended up getting four shots, and twenty stitches. I hated watching this, but I sat patiently by her side until she was done. We picked up some medicine for her to take for the next few days, and antibiotic, and steroids, then I drove us back to the house.
Once we made it inside, the smell of bacon and coffee had begun to go stale in the air. “Well, what do you want for lunch? I’ll cook while you go wash up!” I asked, smiling over at her as she sat down at the island.
“You don’t have to..” she began, but I cut her off.
“My attitude this morning.. I scared you, scared you enough to run away, and because of me, you got hurt. I’m sorry, Maisie.. I didn’t mean to scare you, I’m used to shooting a glare at people when I get embarrassed, or frustrated about something and they’ll drop it. I shouldn’t have done that with you, you didn’t do anything wrong.” I smiled at her.
“You didn’t do anything wrong.. I did.. I panicked because I thought I upset you, and I just.. I didn’t want to upset you. You’ve been so nice, and when you looked at me like that.. the anger.. I just.. I panicked. It wasn’t your fault Angelo, I overreacted.. I’m sorry.” She said back, her eyes softening as she smiled back at me.
