{Maisie’s POV}
Waking up the next morning was a nightmare, the cut on my face was painful, luckily it wasn’t deep enough to need stitches. I had a black eye, and the whole upper left side of my face was swelled.
I groaned as I stood up walking to the bathroom, I paused, looking at my reflection in the mirror. I looked terrible, I reached up, touching my cheek softly and winced at the pain. I couldn’t go into work looking like this.. the staff, and my patients would have so many questions. Not to mention, Reggie could be there.. he was supposed to be working today. I walked back to my bedroom grabbing my phone and calling the hospital. Jess answered, “Hello, Crystal Rose Hospital, this is Jess, how can I help you?”
“Hey Jess, it’s Maisie, I won’t be in today, I.. um.. I woke up sick this morning..” I said, my voice soft, barely above a whisper.
“Oh no! You too? Doctor Reggie didn’t show up for his shift this morning either, and no one has been able to get a hold of him.” She said, her voice full of worry. “I hope you get to feeling better, I’ll call in one of the other doctors that are on call.” She said, before hanging up.
My heart dropped, I drove away from there so fast.. did I accidentally hit him with my car? Did I hurt him.. or even.. ki** him? I felt my breath get hitched in my throat, and suddenly I was panting as though I’d just run ten miles. “Maisie?” Heather asked walking into the doorway, when she saw me she sprung into action. She ran into the kitchen grabbing my inhaler from the cabinet and running back to me. She handed it to me, and helped me take two big huffs while my hands were shaking. “What’s wrong Maisie? What’s going on?” She asked, as I began to regulate my breathing.
“D-Doctor Reggie.. he didn’t show up for work today.. no one can reach him on his cell.. what if I..” I began, looking up to her. “What if I hit him with my car when I was driving away.. he could be bleeding out in an alley way, or even dead.. because of me!” I cried, running back to my room and grabbing some clothes from my closet. I grabbed a pair of black dress slacks, a white turtleneck, and a black blazer quickly dressing myself.
“Where are you going Maisie?” She asked, following behind me as I made my way to the front door grabbing my keys and sliding on my shoes.
“I have to go look for him, I have to make sure that I didn’t hurt him!” I said, turning and opening the door.
“Maisie! He hurt you! Look at your face! You shouldn’t be so worried about him, I’m sure that even if you did hit him, he was in the hospital parking lot which means that someone from the hospital would have found him!” She said, grabbing my arm.
“Not if he stumbled into an alley! He could be dead somewhere because of me..” I whimpered, shaking my arm free. “I have to make sure that I didn’t hurt him!” I turned back towards the door.
“Maisie wait! I’ll go with you!” She said, grabbing her jacket and pulling it on. She followed me out the door, closing and locking it behind us. I made my way to my car, then remembered my window was busted out. “We should take my car Maisie, I’ll drive!” She said.
I followed her to her car, and got in, and she drove us to the hospital. We parked across the street and got out, searching through every alley in the area, but we never found him. I didn’t know whether to be relieved or more anxious. He could still be out there somewhere, I could have hit him with my car. As we got back into the car I couldn’t help but sigh as I sat down. “I’m worried.. I could get in trouble.. if he’s dead I could go to prison.. or if he is alive, he could have me arrested for a hit and run.. not to mention, the hospital has security cameras!” I said, placing my head in my hands, tears beginning to prick in my eyes.
“Okay, before we say anything, let’s go check out the camera footage. If we can check it and see what it caught, then we might be able to go from there.” She said, calming my nerves.
I nodded, and we made our way into the hospital, trying to avoid anyone I knew, and making our way to the security room. Luckily there was only one person that worked security, and he was gone this week on vacation. As we stepped into the security room I quickly walked to the desk, logging in and finding the footage from last night. “Okay, this was last night.. here is when I was leaving the hospital.” I said, pointing to the screen, showing myself walking towards the front door from an inside cam. We looked at the outside cameras seeing Reggie run and hide behind a car. As soon as the door opened, I saw myself walking out, and getting nervous before running to my car. Once inside, I saw him come up to my window. He busted it in, and punched me, then I reversed and pulled away. The car didn’t even hurt him, it was enough to make him jump back out of the way. “I didn’t even hit him.. so where is he?” I asked, he watched the footage, seeing him sitting out front of the hospital, then suddenly, he just disappeared. I froze, what happened, he was just right there and now he was gone. “Where did he go?” I asked, rewatching it four times just to make sure that I wasn’t crazy. I saved the video onto a flash drive that I found on the desk, before deleting it completely from the hard drive.
“What are you doing?” She asked, looking over at me as I slid the flash drive into my pocket.
“I’m getting the evidence of what happened, and deleting the rest of the footage. If something did happen to him, it’ll look suspicious that the video footage was edited, and if someone sees that he assaulted me beforehand I’ll be blamed!” I said, turning and walking out of the room carefully. “Let’s go home!” I said, making my way back out to the car.
She followed me out, and jumped in the car with me. “Why are you acting so nervous about it though, you’ve never done anything wrong, you’ve always been kind, and considerate, even when you were being abused by Robert! You’re a good person, so why cover this up?” She asked.
“Because the last thing I need is this coming back to haunt me later! My entire reputation as a doctor would be ruined!” I sighed. “This job.. and you.. is all I have. If I lose my job, and my reputation is ruined, I won’t be able to get another one. I love being a doctor, and I don’t want to lose this.”
She placed her hand on my shoulder. “I know that you’re hot wired to constantly be afraid this way, but you’re okay, you’re safe now!” She said, pulling me into a hug.
I pulled away smiling at her, “Thank you Heather, now, let’s go home!”
