{Maisie’s POV}
[Reader discretion advised, this chapter talks about gun violence, and stitching up a wound.]
I groaned, sitting up and gripping my head, it was throbbing, my vision spinning as I threw my legs over the side of the bed. I stood up slowly, steadying myself on my nightstand. “Fu**, my head..” I groaned, grabbing a bottle of acetaminophen from my cabinet and popping two in my mouth. I opened a bottle of water, drinking them down.
I walked out, of my room, seeing Heather passed out on the couch. Well, at least halfway on the couch, her head and torso was in the floor, face down, while her hips and legs were up on the couch. I laughed, she looked ridiculous, though most days after her night out she ended up this way. She’d be sprawled out wherever she decided to lay when she’d get home. The hallway, the kitchen counter, one time I found her in the bathroom on the toilet. I walked over, tapping on her forehead.
“Heather.. Heather.. come on, it’s time to get up!” I said softly, laughing as she shook her head from side to side, lazily rubbing her eyes.
“What time is it?” She groaned out.
I stood up, walking over and grabbing the acetaminophen and water and placing it on the coffee table. “Nearly time for us to go get your car. I have to go get ready for work.” I giggled. “Now take the meds, and try to wake up!”
I walked back into my room, stripping out of the dress from the night before. I hopped in the shower, washing off completely. When I got out I dried off, my hair already beginning to curl itself into its kinky curls. I sighed slipping into my fuzzy green robe, and grabbed my hair dryer. I dried my hair as fast as I could before pulling out my hair straightener. I began straightening the curls, knowing that straight hair is going to be easier to deal with today. Once my hair was straight, I put on a little makeup, just some eyeliner and mascara. I walked to my bedroom, pulling out my underwear and bra, and grabbing my work scrubs. I pulled on my white lace bra and panties, and got my sage green work scrubs, matching it with a sage green, silk headband. I grabbed my keys and purse, making my way back out into the living room. Heather was now leaning across the kitchen counter with a straw sticking out of her mouth, lazily sipping on some water.
“In all the time I’ve been getting ready, you’re just now getting up?” I laughed, grabbing my mug and making myself some coffee. I opened the fridge, seeing some strawberry cheesecake cupcakes in there, and laughing. “We actually made them? I don’t even remember doing that!”
She nodded, “The kitchen was a mess by the time we finished, you were so mad that the guy from the bar paid our tab that you made two dozen of them!” She laughed.
“There’s only a dozen in here though..” I said, looking over to her. I noticed that the couch was surrounded with wrappers as I looked around the room. “You ate a dozen cupcakes?”
“I ate them while I cleaned the kitchen up! You’re welcome, by the way!” She laughed. “Okay, let’s go get my car!”
We stepped outside locking the door behind us, and heading to my car. We made our way back out to the club, and I dropped her off, making sure she got in her car. She honked as she left the club, and I honked back, making my way to the hospital. I stepped out, walking into the building, I decided to bring a few cupcakes for myself to eat throughout the day and I needed to get my lunchbox in the fridge. After I did that, I went my station and clocked in, setting down my coffee at my table.
“Thank goodness you’re here, now I can clock out!” Brittney, one of the women I worked with said, leaning down over the table. “It was a long night..” she groaned.
“I can see that.” I giggled. “Go ahead, I’m here and ready to work!”
She sighed standing back up and leaning over the table. “How are you always this chipper?” She asked. “Don’t you ever have a bad day?”
I nodded, taking a sip of my coffee. “I’ve had plenty, but I don’t let that stop me, I try hard to have a better day.” I smiled.
She rolled her eyes, “So happy.. it’s sickening.. alright miss positivity, I’m going home!” She said, walking past me and clocking out. She left as quickly as she appeared, and I began my day. I made my rounds, checking in on my patients, grabbing drinks and blankets, before heading back to my station. When I made it back I saw something that made my heart sink. Blood droplets were all over the floor, I took off, following them and ended up finding one of the new hires holding a towel on a man’s shoulder. He was bleeding heavily, and his skin was turning a sickly pale color. They were in a room, she had just gotten him on the bed, I ran over, looking to the new hire Jess.
“What happened here?” I asked.
She was panicking, sweating, and looking everywhere but at me. “I-I’m not sure.. he came in.. he’s bleeding.. I’m trying to stop it.. he said he was shot” she muttered. I put on gloves and nudged her out of the way.
“What’s your blood type sir?” I asked, looking up to him.
“A-A positive..” he muttered, barely able to speak.
“Jess, go get me a bag of A positive, grab the cart from behind my desk, bring it all in here stat.” I shouted. She nodded taking off back towards the office, I looked to the man in front of me, he looked weak, and sickly. “Okay, now I need to know, did the bullet go through and through, or is it lodged in your shoulder?” I asked, trying my best to remain calm.
“I-It’s in my shoulder..” he said, groaning as he threw himself back on the bed.
“Alright, I need you to lay back and try your best to relax. I’m going to get some lidocaine to numb you up!” I said, turning and hitting the call button. “I need lidocaine, and everything for suturing a wound. I need plenty of gauze, and make sure to sterilize everything!” I turned my attention back to him. “Stay with me okay, and no matter how tired you get, stay awake, you hear me?”
