Yes Ma’am

{Maisie’s POV} “Yes ma’am!” He said, shooting another look to his brother. “Don’t look at him! He can’t help you now!” I laughed. “You’re my patient, and I take care of my patients!” I rolled my eyes. “You’ll need to wait here until I get your X-ray taken, and get the results back. You also need to let the bag of blood finish to make sure that you gain back the blood you lost. I’ll also be pushing a bag of fluids, and if you’re still in pain I may set you up on a morphine drip. If you’ll excuse me.. I need to go do my rounds and check on my other patients.” I said, quickly turning and leaving the room. I made my way around checking on all of the patients before heading back to my desk. I grabbed the four cupcakes I had brought with me and made my way back to Mikey’s room. Jess was in there trying to figure out the sling. I chuckled making my way into the room and setting my lunchbox down on the counter. “Jess, you’re going to have to learn to do these things on your own eventually!” I giggled. I helped place the sling on properly and showed her the easiest way to do it. “Yes ma’am!” She said, her eyes darting around the room. I stepped in front of her and smiled. “How many times have I asked you to call me by name. Calling me ma’am makes me feel old!” I rolled my eyes, laughing it off. “Y-Yes Doctor Maisie!” She muttered. “Just Maisie, Jess!” I walked over grabbing a cupcake out of my lunchbox and handed it to her. “Go take a break, you’ve dealt with a lot today, go eat this, and relax for a bit okay?” “Yes D.. I mean Maisie!” She smiled. “Thank you!” She added, taking the cupcake and leaving the room. I chuckled turning back to my lunchbox. “If I give you one of these, will you promise to calm down a bit Mikey?” I asked, grabbing another cupcake. He paused a moment, looking over me. “How do I know you didn’t poison it?” I couldn’t help the laugh that escaped me. “Yes, I can see the headlines now. Country doctor saves man from bullet wound only to ki** him with a cupcake!” I walked over placing it in his hand. “I made them for my birthday, they’re safe, I even have more in here that I’ll eat if it’ll make you feel better.” I sighed making my way back to the box and grabbing the other two. I walked one over to his brother, the man from last night and handed it to him. “I suppose this will have to do for you buying our food and drinks last night. I hope you like sweets.” I smiled, placing it in his very large hand. He looked down at it, and back up at me. “You’re not angry? You did tell me not to pay for it.” He said, leaning back in the chair. I shrugged. “Maybe I did poison them.” I laughed, turning around just in time to see Mikey scarfing down half of it. He froze and I cackled loudly, not able to contain the fit of laughter. “I didn’t poison them, geez! You really can’t take a joke!” I opened mine and began eating it. I loved it, it was a strawberry cupcake, with cheesecake frosting. “This is the best cupcake I’ve ever had Angelo!” Mikey said, devouring the other half. That’s right, his name is Angelo, such a sweet name for such a massive, broody looking guy. I quietly ate mine and threw away the wrapper. I walked to Mikey and tossed his wrapper in the trash as well. Then I saw the man from last night slowly take a bite. His eyes widened as he looked down at the cupcake. “This is.. really good..” he smiled, a genuine, and sweet smile. I felt a blush creep up on my face and turned around only to meet Mikey’s eyes as he gave me a knowing look. I rolled my eyes and turned back to the door walking out and grabbing Mikey’s chart. “Okay, looks like I got the bullet out, there was no other real damage to the shoulder besides a muscle tear, and you do have a hairline fracture in your humerus.” I said, checking the charts. “Other than that you look alright. Like I said, plenty of rest, no heavy lifting, no working out, and absolutely no guns!” I said, pointing at him. “I want to see you back in one week to check the stitches and do another X-ray, then again in two weeks for the same reason. After that, I’ll want you back in a month to check your progress and begin setting you up with physical therapy.” I said turning to see Angelo finishing off his cupcake. “Keep him from anything he’d do to hurt himself and he should make a full recovery.” “Alright, will do, is there anything else?” He asked standing up, and walking over to throw away his wrapper. I shook my head pulling my chart to my chest. “No, everything else looks fine. He just needs to remain as relaxed as possible.” “I think I can manage that.” He said, nodding his head. “One more thing, how did you receive that specific wound Mikey?” I asked, turning back to him. “Well.. I was just.. I..” he began stammering. “It was a hunting accident.” Angelo said, causing me to turn my attention back to him. I paused, thinking for a moment. “A hunting accident.. in the middle of the city.. you sure you want to stick to that story?” I asked, eyeing both of them. Both of them nodded. “We also require confidentiality, because our family is one that is well known in this city. It could be scandalous if this appears in any news outlets.” Angelo finished, walking closer to me. “So, if you could just pretend that it was something other than a gunshot wound, that would be great.” I rolled my eyes and scoffed at him. “Yes, I got my medical degree by playing pretend!” I snapped. “I’m legally required to report this to the police, if I don’t then I could lose my license.” I said, crossing my arms over my chest. He paused for a minute. “Fine, call them in, we’ll wait and talk to them.” “We will?” Mikey asked, looking over to us. “Yes Mikey, just tell them what happened.” Angelo said, turning his attention to his brother. “Well, while you two figure out a better story than hunting accident, I’m going to go get myself a coffee.” I turned leaving the room and rubbing the back of my neck. What had I gotten myself into with these guys?
