CHAPTER THIRTY-FOUR

He carefully approached Vivk's chair, it wasn't the only chair there but he figured the dwarf wouldn't like it. Vivk barely spared him any glance as briskly made his way to a different table. It was on the other side of the room and had so many things atop it. Vivk got to the table and made to continue from where he had stopped. Vernon couldn't clearly see what Vivk was doing and even if he did, he probably wouldn't understand it. Vernon was staring intensely at Vivk and what lay on his table even though he knew he didn't understand it, it still didn't stop him from staring. Vivk took a while working and jiggling, with his back to Vernon who was about to lose the crap out of his mind. After about a couple of minutes of not being able to take it anymore, the poor boy called out, "Is there a special reason why I am here?" Vivk doesn't turn around or say anything for the first few seconds after his question. "Vivk?" He called. "Oh, yeah, yeah." The dwarf returned absentmindedly and Vernon found himself waiting another couple of minutes. Suddenly, the bell went off and Vernon jumped out of the bed. "Vivk," he started. "I'm hungry and if you don't tell me what is going on right now, I fear I will miss the first dinner and I'll starve to death." He muttered uncontrollably while Vivk stared at him oddly. Vernon could never figure out where he got the courage to speak to Vivk so boldly. Vivk stared at him for a couple of seconds and then sighed, loudly. He didn't say anything after them just turned his attention back to what he was doing but Vernon wasn't about to let it and just as he was about to protest even further the dwarf said, "Go on now but be back as soon as possible. I have been trying to figure this out for a while and I finally have so shoo, your constant whining is distracting." Vernon wanted to say something but decided against it and just closed the door with a loud bang. However, the noise didn't even faze the dwarf as he was engrossed with the task before him. Vernon fled down the hallway but when he got to the main one he slowed down, the worst thing that could happen to him was Madame Rebecca seeing him run. She would have his head. She was known to be the meanest, nastiest Madame and often went out of her way to be wicked. None of the kids liked her and if one of the children were unlucky enough to be at the end of her wrath, the rest could only stare in sympathy from afar because if they were too close Madame Rebecca's wrath was sure to suck them in. She spared absolutely no one. He remembered his first encounter with her and it wasn't one he liked to look back on. At the time he didn't know what his name was but it didn't take him long to find out as she tended to be in everybody's business and felt she was more important than she really was. As if the heavens heard his evil thoughts, he took the turn that would lead him directly to the cafeteria and he hit a wall. "Ow," he whined, rubbing his forehead. He would have sworn he came in contact with a metallic substance. He looked up wondering what he could have hit on this free path when he came face to face with Madame Rebecca. Vernon felt his face drain of blood as his eyes widened in fear. She had turned around just as he raised his head. The look she gave him was enough to give him nightmares for weeks. She began to slowly stretch her hand towards him and Vernon shrank dreading the worse. "Vernon!" A voice called and Vernon turned to find Madame Jessica. The relief that coursed through his soul was so intense, he staggered. "Why are you still out here?" She asked and began walking towards him. "The first dinner started minutes ago." "Vivk had called for me," he replied and quickly rushed to her side. "Go on then before the food finishes. It is the first dinner, it is never really enough." She scolded him. "Yes Madame Jessica," he called out and fled. She didn't need to tell him twice. He was even more surprised that Madame Rebecca had let him go but it wasn't like he gave her much of a choice as he had fled the first chance he got. "Vernon, where were you?" Florence asked when he stretched out his tray to her. Almost every child was seated with their plates of food in front of them and it was barely a couple of minutes ago that the bell rang. Florence's dishing skills were second to none. "Vivk called me," he replied. "Why?" She asked and the food made a slushing sound as it landed on his plate. "He didn't say," he looked at the plate and looked at Florence and she instantly knew she was to add more. "I had to force him to let me go." "That dwarf!" She yelled and lifted the spoon with extra helping and turned it on Vernon's tray. "Well, be thankful I realized you were missing and saved some for you." "Oh thank you so much, Florence. I will definitely have starved without you." He said with a huge smile. She blushed, "Now, run along Vernon so you can have time to eat before the bell rings again." "Yes, Florence." He said and began to walk away. Normally he sat with most of his roommates but he didn't want any of their baggage today and they were most likely to make a fuss about why his tray was twice theirs even though he has explained times without normal why Florence was so nice to him. He wasn't ready for that considering they never did as he told them and he still had a cold relationship with Nevil who was quite friendly with the rest of the g**g except him.
