There was a pretty empty table not very far from the counter and about two girls were seated on it. "Hi," he said softly before settling in. He didn't even spare them much of a glance, he didn't really care all he wanted was somewhere else to eat.
"I am sorry but you can't sit here." One of the girls said and her friend gasped and whispered her name. "Sandra."
Vernon didn't react immediately because he had his spoon about an inch from his mouth. Her words made him hesitate but it didn't stop him from taking his first bite.
"Um, didn't you hear me?" She asked a little too loudly, her voice had picked up an annoying tone.
Vernon took the second spoon. One thing was for sure, she couldn't chase him from the table if he didn't want to leave and the worst she could do was cause a scene. Besides, the first dinner would be over in a couple of minutes. He was sure he could handle her attitude throughout the meal.
He had not looked too closely but she was familiar, very so but he couldn't quite place what magic group he saw her. He was a tiny bit sure it wasn't one he had been in and the only ones were fire and unmagic.
Last he checked unmagic were only made up of two members but rumor had it that they were three and he had only seen one, technically he had not seen him yet because the invisible boy tended to keep himself invisible almost at all times and times when he wasn't.
He always wore something over his head that shielded his head and the sides of his face. He mostly kept to himself and was actually more visible when invisible than when one could see him. He loved pranks and often went out of his way to execute some pretty great ones that Vernon had found himself snickering at as he watched the action play out.
However, he had never been overly curious about the invisible boy except for his actual name of course but nobody knew it and he didn't feel a need to ask. "Huh?" Sandra threw at him again, jolting him from his wandering thoughts.
He sighed loudly, threw a lock of hair out of his face, and just continued eating like nothing had happened. If she really had a problem with him, she was welcome to pull him out of the table herself.
From the corner of his eyes, he could see her getting exasperated as he chewed on minding his business. She looked quite red and he was afraid she would pop but he couldn't help but admit that he was totally enjoying this.
He finally concentrated on his meal, ignoring her and her constant mumbling and pointing at him. He couldn't even guess the point of it but truthfully he didn't care enough to think about it, he was starving and he was going to pay attention to what was important. His stomach.
He feared he was gulping the food rather than actually chewing and swallowing but I didn't bother him, it was just that his mother hated when he did that and always scolded him whenever she noticed he was rushing his meals.
He missed, he had tried not to think about her as he had been pretty occupied with trying to find his magic but now that that was out of the way he couldn't help but succumb to his thoughts.
He wondered if she was good and he already had a sibling. He didn't think that was possible and chuckled at the thought. He wondered what his brother or sister would be named and if they would take after him or his mother as he took after his father.
Vernon's palm wrapped around the cup a little harder than usual. He couldn't figure out why he was thinking about these things and they weren't making him feel any good, especially with miss sassy pants whining every chance she got.
He was glad she gave up trying to chase him away from the table and just tried to make him as uncomfortable as she could. He was sure she was more pissed about the fact she wasn't winning than the fact that he was still at the table.
This was the first time he was ever with a group of people his age and he hated every bit of it, if he could escape he probably would. He kept to himself as much as he could but still, they found a way to get to him even though he kept his distance.
Another thing that made him want to hide under a table and cry was the constant noise, somebody was always yelling. Somebody was always shouting. Somebody was always falling. The commotion was the order of the day and he found that he was more exhausted from the things around him than the actual things he had engaged in.
He took a gulp of the water but he must have rushed a little too much as the water formed a ball and went down his throat with the force of a giant. Vernon could only sit there with a look of horror on his face at the excruciating pain that followed.
As if the heavens were totally against him, Miss sassy pants didn't miss the incident and then proceeded to laugh as loudly as she could, attracting the entire cafeteria's attention but her laughter wasn't enough to hold so they all immediately returned to their meals which were at this point basically over.
The relief that Vernon felt when the pain finally subsided was quite intense and he tried to ignore the fact that she had just laughed at his pain and continued eating. He was done in less than a minute and he drank the rest of the water from the cup but this time he made sure to do so slowly.
He dropped the cup with a loud bang, the bang didn't disrupt the noise that had already erupted in different sections of the cafeteria but it was loud enough for Sandra to jump in shock. She glared at him and he felt his smile increase. A weird idea had taken form in his head.
