Chapter Eleven. Preparing

774 Words
The next day, as promised, I went straight to Ms.Phillips office and knocked on the door, she agreed to let me enter, and once the door closed behind me I went straight to it. " Is there anyway that Jamie can get more food? He told me that he hasn't been able to eat as much considering he is only fed once a day. " I'm sure i can arrange something for him. Thank you for bringing that to my attention" Ms.Phillips smiled. I was surprised that everything had went so smoothly. " Well thank you " I nodded and began to leave the room when she stopped me. " Wait one minute. Come back here and sit down" here it was. The moment I was waiting for. Of course this would happen. I was going to get fired. I had pushed my luck too far and now I was going to be canned. " Now, I understand that you care for Jamie. I do understand it, trust me. But it has been brought to my attention that you provided him with a walkie talkie? ". s**t, I had been found out. This was bad. I had to think of something to say quick. " Yes..I did. I'm sorry. I know it's against policy but you said yourself that Jamie was different. That he didn't really belong here. I'm trying to work with him to get him out of here. I wouldn't do this with the other patients" I tried to assure her which only left her with more questions it seemed. " Well, tell me then, why is Jamie so different to you? Sure, he is smart. And yes, I do believe he doesn't belong here but why is he important to you? Why would you take a chance on everything, just for Jamie? " She asked the question and I didn't have the answer. I was trying to save up for college and i needed the money therefore I needed this job. I don't know what was coming over me. I literally was risking my job to help someone I didn't even know..someone who could quite possibly be a criminal. " I don't know..I guess..I just feel like...I know what it is like. I know what it is like to be alone..to have few friends. I know what it is like to feel trapped and feel judged for things you didn't do. To have people give you stares. To have people not care. And I guess on some level, I just want him to know he is cared about. At least from a professional stand point, I want to help him. When I took this job, I kind of did it for the money. But I'm seeing now that I can actually do something positive with this. I can change someone's life and help them. For the better. And as much as I love this job, I think the world would be better off without a need for these kind of places " I answered. Ms.Phillips seemed to think long and hard about my answer before finally cracking a small smile. " Listen, I should fire you. I should not have even hired you..and yet here you are. I don't want to fire you because I know you are good at this job and you've lasted longer than most. That is something to be proud of. But I can't have you doing that kind of stuff anymore. Bringing him books is fine. But walkie talkies, that can't be happening. If you want to work with Jamie and try to convince him to work on passing a proper psyche evaluation then by all means, go for it. But you still have to follow the rules here" She explained. " And also, make sure you being honest with him about the world out there. Because at the end of the day, he hasn't been outside in a long time..not properly at least. And he needs to know and make the choice of whether he wants to face things as they are or not. Otherwise he will just end up right back here again or worse" I know she was only trying to look out for me, and I appreciate it. I did want to get him out of here. I didn't know what the world would have been store for him once he got out, but I was hoping that at the very least he would want to be my friend. I would try to show him the entire world for what it was if I could. If he would give me that chance.
