Book 1: The Twin Alphas’ Fated Mate: Chapter 1

1321 Words
~Mercury~ I close my locker door for the last time. I finally finished high school. I'm so over it. People think I'm strange here because strange things happen around me. It started at the end of freshman year when I had just turned 15. Stuff started happening. First, it was small things, like my books would shift slightly towards me when I went to pick them up. Then bigger things as time went on, like the vines outside my window would grow to my will if I thought it hard enough. Not always but it happened if I concentrate on it. But the thing that freaked everyone out was in sophomore year, a guy named Nate Alan was bothering me in science class and it made me angry. The beaker in front of me exploded and the room caught fire. Our teacher said we weren't working with flammables and that it shouldn't have happened. Nate suffered minor burns and cuts, and I walked out completely untouched. After that, people just started avoiding me. I sometimes hear people whisper witch or demon when I walk by, but I just ignore it. This town is pretty religious, so I guess the thought of anything unnatural like magic scares them. It scares me sometimes too, because I don't know what it is. But I don't have magic. That is impossible. I mean, I don't know my birth parents because they died when I was a baby. All I have is a picture of them. No one from my birth family came to take me in either, so I was adopted by a nice couple. They were good to me and they were a rich family that came from old money on both sides. But then my mom passed away from cancer when I was 13 and my dad started drinking his life away. He never leaves the house anymore. He's not violent, but he did become a slob, so I usually have to take care of the house. I have no plans now that I'm out of school. I never wanted to go to college. Nothing really interests me enough to want to spend thousands of dollars. I like to write stories and I can do that for free. I don't have a job because my mom left me with a pretty big inheritance that I've only used to buy my laptop at the start of senior year. I head for my car. I don't park in the school parking lot. I don't trust the kids here, with the way they treat me. I wouldn't be surprised if they damaged my car in some way and my mom left me this car when she passed. It was brand new so I try to keep it in good shape. I park behind the strip mall across the street. It has a few stores and a coffee shop. I don't mind walking if it means the car will be undamaged. I turn the corner of the strip mall and look around. It's deserted back here as usual. There is nothing but dumpsters back here so I normally don't see anyone. I reach my car and I pull my bag to my side to get my keys. I open the zipper and all my stuff falls out. "Shit." I put my bag down and go to bend to pick up my stuff when a pair of black boots step next to my bag. I look up and see a tall, dark-haired man standing over me. He can't be much older than me. Mid 20s, I'd say. "Looks like you need some help." The man kneels next to me and picks up my bag. "I'm Ivan." I rush to pick up the rest of my belongings and stand. "Thanks, but I'm fine." I go to reach for my bag but the man named Ivan pulls it away. "You are so beautiful. What's your name?" Ivan looks at me with a dark gaze. This is weird. "I'm sorry but I really need to go." I reach for my bag again but he keeps a firm hold of it. "We've only just met darling. There's no rush." Ivan says to me. I look down and notice his hand is just behind his back. I start to back away when he sees me looking. I drop my things and run. Ivan is quick to follow. I run back towards the front of the strip mall. It's more populated and Ivan won't follow me here. I slip inside the coffee shop and slide into a booth where I can still see the front of the store. I'm panting so hard, I'm surprised I don't draw more attention to myself. I manage to calm myself down and keep my eyes on the door. I am sitting in that booth for about an hour when a waitress comes up to me and tells me if I want to stay, I have to order something. I apologize and order a tea. She comes back over in no time with a small teapot and cup on a tray. I make my tea, my hands still shaking. I sit for another 45 minutes. The waitress tells me their closing in 15 minutes and I look to the clock. Its almost 5 pm. Ivan can't still be out there waiting for me. The waitress brings me my check and places on the table. I look down at it and realize I don't have my wallet. I dropped it when I ran from Ivan. I desperately check my pockets looking for some change, anything. This is pathetic. It's a $3 cup of tea and I'm going to have to tell the waitress I can't pay. All of a sudden, someone slides into my booth and grabs the bill. I look up and see Ivan. I'm about to yell for the waitress when something cold touches my knee. "Don't make a scene. I don't want to have to shoot you, sweetheart." Ivan says sweetly. I freeze, my eyes wide. He has a gun pressed to my knee. The waitress comes back over. "Sorry hon. We are no longer serving." she says to Ivan. "Oh, that's not a problem. My girlfriend just forgot her wallet and I came to bring it to her." Ivan flashes a smile at the waitress. He holds up my wallet. You'd never guess he was holding a gun under the table right now with how he's talking to her. Ivan takes a $5 bill out of my wallet and hands it to the waitress. She smiles and thanks us. Ivan turns and looks back down in my wallet. He pulls out my driver's license. "Mercury. What an interesting name, sweetheart. I think I'll keep a hold of this. Now, you are going to do exactly as I say. We are going to walk back to your car as it everything is normal. If you try anything, I will kill you and anyone around to witness. Got it?" Ivan says to me in a serious tone. I nod my head. He tells me to stand. I do as he says and we start to walk back to my car. When we round the corner, my car comes into sight, but there's another car parked next to it. All black with darkly tinted windows. I almost stop, but I feel Ivan's gun press into my lower back and I keep walking. Once we are only a few feet from the car, Ivan grabs the back of my hair. Tears burn at the back of my eyes as my head starts to sting. Ivan holds up a needle. That's what he must've been holding behind him before I ran. "No! Please no-" I feel the stab of the needle in my neck. I immediately feel dizzy and fight to keep conciseness but the darkness wins and I see black.
