As soon as she noticed the brown haired man started to walk towards her, Luci took the book that was closest to her hand and, without even as much as looking at the title, took it to the counter to pay for it. He wouldn't dare approach her with other people around, or so she hoped.
She didn't know what made her uneasy about them, about him especially. She wasn't the type to run away from anyone or anything, she was the type to confront problems head on, yet all she wanted to do then was to get as far away from there as she could, as fast as she possibly could. If she could just use her powers she would be long gone, but she had to play by the rules or Diana would do that thing to her head again and she just didn't think she could afford to experience that twice in the same day.
She handed the elder lady at the counter a big enough bill and didn’t even hotter to wait for the change before walking out into the parking lot, and directly to her car. She got in and drove away as fast as she could. There was no way those mutts would follow her now.
It had taken all the courage Xavier had to finally walk up to her. It was so unlike him to be nervous or scared, but when it came to his mate, he was nothing but that. He wanted to know her name, to hear her voice, and most of all, he wanted to see her eyes; she had removed her sunglasses and placed them on top of her head, but he still couldn't see her eyes because she kept looking down at books. He wiped his sweaty palms on his jeans, and took a deep breath. He froze in place about half way towards her, as he saw her start walking towards the counter. In a panic, he turned to look at Adam and Annie. Adam mouthed 'go on' as he made hand gestures, as if to shoo Xavier away. Annie just stood there, arms crossed, and raised an eyebrow in his direction, while wondering what had happened to her overconfident brother.
By the time Xavier turned to look at his mate again, she was out the door, and he could faintly make her outline as she walked towards a bright red sports car. He hauled ass to the door, only to watch her speed out of the parking lot, once he was outside. Adam and Annie were at his side in a second, and they wasted no time getting in their own car to try and catch up to her.
"I told you you should've gone sooner!" Exclaimed Adam from the passenger seat.
"Shut up, where'd she go?" Asked Xavier, desperate from behind the wheel. He felt a panic surge inside him that was almost painful.
"Just get on the highway genius, like she could go anywhere else!" Shouted Annie from the back seat.
Xavier drove his jeep through the traffic as fast as he could. He finally caught up to the red sports car at a red light. He felt hope spark within him and he finally loosened his hands on the steering wheel. He felt a tingling in his fingers, he didn't know if it was from having his mate so close, or the blood flow that had been cut off from how tight he was holding on to the wheel.
Luci looked at her rearview mirror, and saw no other than the three wolfmen from before. She decided it was about time she stopped being a wimp and started being herself again, she had to find out what they wanted with her, could they possibly know who she was?
She took the next exit off the highway, and stopped at a rest area. There was a big, bright pink truck parked on the other side of the rest area, but aside from that, there was no one else there. She wasn't surprised to see the white jeep pull up beside her. She quickly got out and walked to the edge of the woods to avoid having them trap her in the car. As expected, she was followed only by the blonde wolfman. She'd show him who he was messing with, even if Diana split her head in half.
Once she was at the edge of the woods, hidden from the other two that were waiting in the car, she abruptly turned around to look at him.
She found herself getting lost in his forest green eyes, but quickly snapped out of it. She concentrated in her anger, and tried her hardest to not inhale his intoxicating scent. Everything about him just reminded her of nature, and it was driving her crazy how alluring that was.
She shook those thoughts away and held her head up high, "OK. Spill it wolfman. What do you want with me!"
To say Xavier was taken aback, was an understatement. She called him 'wolfman'. She couldn't possibly know what he was though, right? And her voice, oh her voice was angelic, yet it held authority, like she didn't fear him at all. 'Strange' he thought to himself. 'Sexy' thought his wolf.
Her voice brought him back to reality "so, speak!" She demanded.
"I-I" he was at a complete loss of words. He didn't even know where to start.
'Tell her now. Let's take her with us now!' His wolf demanded in his head, taking him off guard.
"You what?" She asked exasperatedly.
He opened his mouth to give her an explanation, but only one word came out "Mate."
Luci heard him, but it took her a few seconds to process what he had said.
'Did he just-' she was at loss of words. clearly he was mistaken, she couldn't possibly have a mate, her sister was the one to appoint mates in the first place-.
'Sister!' That was it, she knew exactly who to go to, who could fix this mess.
With one last look at his startled expression she ran into the forest. She had to get away before she could use her powers, there was no way she could let anyone find out who she really was.
Once she was a good distance away from him she opened a portal and stepped through it. The portal led her to the beautiful garden of a Greek mansion. She looked around the garden and took a deep breath to calm her anger. White roses lined the outside of the mansion, and tall bushes signaled the beginning of a huge maze. Two majestic cherry blossom trees stood, one at each side of the mansion, and the soft wind blew the cherry blossoms to the grass all throughout the garden, making it look like a soft pink carpet.
"Lucia." She heard from behind her, and she quickly turned around to see the oldest of her sisters. Her anger quickly boiled once again as she remembered why she had gone there in the first place. It made her even angrier to see that Selene was so calm, so angelic in her white robe, dressed like the true Greek goddess she was.
"Cut the to the point, Selene, what is the meaning of this?!" Luci boomed, making an echo erupt within the mansion. Her voice held power and authority, letting her sister know she was not playing. Inside though, Lucy felt like she would faint any minute. I wasn’t a headache this time but the most horrible dizzy spell. She didn’t know if she would faint first or empty the contents of her stomach due to the feeling of vertigo she was experiencing.
"Could you be more specific as to what 'this' you are referring to?" Selene asked, with an amused expression on her face.
Suddenly another portal opened, not far from them, signaling the arrival of the third, and middle, sister. Diana walked in gracefully, dressed in a black kimono, munching on a pocky stick. She went to stand beside Selene. "Did I miss it?" She asked enthusiastically.
"We were just getting to it." Selene replied, while Luci put two and two together in her head.
Her eyes widened in disbelief, "you were in on this all along!" She pointed a shaky, accusing finger at her newly arrived sister.
"What can I say little sis, I was bored, and you know I like a good show." Diana replied, shrugging just one shoulder, as she put her other other arm around Selene.
"To all this, what are you wearing this time Diana?" Asked a curious Selene.
"This is a Japanese kimono. Did you know in Japan they think of me as a whole organization of soul reapers that take the souls of the dead to a heaven-like place? I wish I had that kind of help, pf. They also think I wear this thing. Honestly it's too dark for my liking, but I felt like it today. Isn't it cute?" She cheerfully answered, completely ignoring Lucy and her boiling anger. Diana was surprised to say the least that her younger sister hadn’t yet collapsed. She was putting enough pressure on her head to put a giant troll in a coma, yet Lucy stayed standing- a bit shaky- but standing. Her admiration for her sister grew quite a bit that day.
"Selene! You gave me a bloody mate!" Lucy exclaimed, her voice getting louder and louder. "You better fix this, this instant! And you," she redirected her anger towards Diana, “get out of my head” she spoke slowly, menangcily squinting her eyes while her head spun like a mary go round.
"First of all" began Selene, also raising her voice up a notch, "do not yell at me. I am your elder and you are being extremely disrespectful! Second of all, I indeed gave you a mate. Diana and I talked it over and we both think this will be good for you. You do not believe in love anymore, and your time is nearing Lucia." She finished with a grim expression. She then turned to her other sister, “Diana please, leave her be while I’m asking nicely, do you enjoy seeing our sister in turmoil?”
Diana just shrugged but Lucy felt her vertigo subside as her anger faded, "you are only thinking about me Selene. Think about that wolfman that now has to be stuck with me as a mate because of your child's play. You are being selfish, can you not see it?" She asked, her hands in the air, in an exasperated manner.
"Awe, she cares about him already! Oh Sel, isn't that just the cutest thing?" Diana asked excitedly, giving small jumps and clapping her hands like a little girl. "And what's wrong with you as a mate? All you have to do is stop running" Diana shrugged again while munching on another pocky stick.
"Don't you dare accuse me of such a thing. You know it's my job to care. To care that their souls don't become dark for losing something so precious, as is a mate to a wolfman. It's my job to see that they don't end up in hell, with me!" Luci replied, her anger once again gaining control over her.
"Well do not accuse ME of such a thing as being selfish Lucia" began Selene. "Choosing mates is much more than putting whomever I want together. It is about completing each other. He has what it takes to make you believe in love again, I know so. And you have it in you to heal his broken soul, I know that as well. Now go back, he is probably scared he lost you already." She finished calmly.
Luci felt calmness overwhelm her, and she knew it was her sister's doing. She snapped out of it before she replied "I'm going back. Back to hell where I belong that is!"
She was about to walk through the portal when she felt that same sharp pain from the morning in her head, almost like someone stuck a needle through her brain. Then she heard Diana speak once again. "Ha! You can't go back until the year is over. It was a sealed deal, and you know what will happen if you try to leave before the time is up. That is if you still want to go back after a year" she wiggled her eyebrows suggestively, then broke out into laughter.
Luci made an exasperated sound before opening a portal back and walking through it to the human world once again.
“Diana, what will happen to her if she decides to leave? Hurting her was never part of the plan.” Selene spoke still looking at where Lucy had disappeared, she was not happy with her sister’s antics.
“Oh come on Sel, I’m not going to hurt her if she leaves, I just made her believe that so she won’t. Did you really think she would just stay of her own accord after finding out it was all a set-up?”
"Still, that could have gone better." Whispered Selene with a sigh. She turned to her sister to see if there was even a speck of regret in her eyes, but she found nothing but soulless black eyes staring straight into hers and a sweet smile that somehow managed to look sincere.
Diana had a way to make her uneasy when she did that, it made her feel like she could see inside not just her head, but her soul as well.
Diana’s smile widened "Yeah. But it also could have gone much worse, which is why I'm here." She said with her back now turned to her sister as she walked into a portal herself, munching on yet another pocky stick.
