Chapter one
Throughout my life, I had come to terms with the fact that I was never my parents' favored child. This reality never truly bothered me, for I understood that my brother, who had fallen ill a few years ago, held that special place in their hearts. In those happier days before his illness, we shared a bond that was as strong as it was joyful. However, everything changed once he became sick. My parents, consumed by their worry and fear, began to restrict my interactions with him, forbidding me from even speaking to him or approaching him. It felt as though they were placing the blame for his illness squarely on my shoulders. Despite the distance that had grown between us, my love for my brother remained unwavering. I longed to see him, to reconnect and share moments that once brought us joy. Since moving out of our family home to pursue my education in college, the opportunities to visit him had dwindled significantly. Now, with the responsibilities of a job weighing on my shoulders, the chance to be with him seemed almost impossible. Each passing day deepened my sense of loss, and though I missed him dearly, I found myself trapped in a situation where my longing was met with a profound sense of helplessness. In the tapestry of my life, a recurring theme has emerged: the pleas of my parents, who frequently implore me to send financial assistance for my brother's medical treatment. Their situation is a stark contrast to my own; while I have secured a job that affords me a modest income, it is not nearly as substantial as they believe. I share my living space with two roommates—one of whom is my closest friend, while the other is her girlfriend. Our financial responsibilities are divided, with my roommates graciously covering a slightly larger share of the bills, fully aware of my commitment to supporting my family back home. They understand the gravity of my contributions and the reasons behind them, yet a cloud of uncertainty lingers in the air. There are whispers of doubt regarding whether the money I send is genuinely reaching its intended purpose—my brother's treatment. The distance between us has grown, as I have not laid eyes on him in seven long years. When I left home, he was just a boy of fourteen, and now I find myself wondering how he has changed, how he is faring in this world that feels so far removed from my own. In the bustling corridors of a company that has been in existence for fourteen years, a legacy established by the CEO's father, I find myself ensnared in a demanding routine. The hours stretch long, often bleeding into the night, as the CEO insists on late work sessions that seem never-ending. My manager, a man lacking in kindness, frequently shifts his own responsibilities onto my shoulders, leaving me to navigate the weight of his expectations. Despite the company’s modest size, the pressure to perform looms large, creating an atmosphere where dedication is both a requirement and a burden. The long hours of work often weigh heavily on my spirit, yet there is an unexpected silver lining that I find myself clinging to. Each day, amidst the relentless grind, I am treated to the sight of the CEO, a striking figure who stands at an impressive six feet two inches. His dark brown hair frames his face perfectly, and his tanned skin seems to glow with an air of confidence. It’s hard not to notice how any woman would leap at the chance for even a fleeting moment with him, myself included. Alas, the reality is that he is not one to date, a fact that lingers in my mind like a bittersweet melody. There are moments when I catch a flicker of hope, sensing that his gaze might linger on me, but each time I muster the courage to look back, I find his eyes elsewhere, leaving me in a state of longing and unfulfilled dreams. In the bustling city, Jason James stood out as one of the most eligible bachelors, captivating hearts and drawing admiration from all corners. While the work environment at the James Company was generally pleasant, it was not without its challenges, primarily stemming from the presence of the manager, Donny, whose demeanor often made the day-to-day tasks feel more cumbersome than they needed to be. Nonetheless, the camaraderie I had developed with my colleagues brought me immense joy, and I cherished the friendships that blossomed amidst the corporate hustle. However, my time at the company was drawing to a close. I had made the bittersweet decision to return to my hometown, a move motivated by my desire to be closer to my brother. I often worried about him, especially since my parents had taken it upon themselves to restrict his access to my contact information, claiming he didn’t even possess a phone. It filled me with concern, and I hoped fervently that he was managing alright on his own. In just two weeks, I would be bidding farewell to the city that had been my home for so long. Today marked the beginning of that transition, as I prepared to submit my two weeks' notice. The thought of facing Jason himself filled me with a mix of anxiety and anticipation, as he was the one who handled all matters related to employee departures. I knew that this conversation would mark the end of a chapter in my life, and I hoped it would be a memorable one.Confronting Jason was a scenario I had never envisioned for myself, yet here I stood, gripped by an overwhelming sense of trepidation. His reputation for instilling fear in those around him was well-known, and the thought of facing him sent shivers down my spine. “Sir, you have a visitor,” announced Jason’s assistant, her voice steady and professional. “Let them in,” he replied, his tone dripping with indifference. As I stepped into the room, a wave of anxiety washed over me, each step feeling heavier than the last. I braced myself for his reaction, knowing full well the gravity of the words I was about to utter. “Mr. James, I am submitting my two weeks' notice today. I will be leaving,” I declared, my voice steady despite the turmoil within. He glanced up from his computer, a look of confusion etched across his features. “Why?” he inquired, his brow furrowing as he tried to comprehend the situation. Caught off guard by the unexpected question, I hesitated momentarily before responding. “I want to be closer to my younger brother, sir.” Jason continued to regard me with a puzzled expression, as if my reasoning was utterly foreign to him. “So you’re leaving to be closer to your brother?” he reiterated, and I nodded, feeling the weight of my decision settle heavily between us. "Where is your brother currently residing?" Jason inquired, his brow slightly furrowed in curiosity. "He should still be living with my parents, sir," I replied, attempting to convey certainty. A look of surprise flickered across his face, but he quickly masked it, adopting a more neutral expression. "So, are you implying that you have no knowledge of whether he is still living with them?" I nodded, affirming, "Yes, sir, that is indeed correct." His gaze lingered on me, as if I had sprouted a second head, bewilderment etched in his features. "And what course of action do you intend to take if your brother is no longer residing with your parents?" The question caught me off guard, for I had not considered the possibility; as far as I was aware, he was still unwell. "I’m not entirely sure, sir," I admitted, my uncertainty hanging in the air like an unresolved melody."I find myself yearning to discover whether he still draws breath, sir." The expression on his face shifted to one of astonishment at my revelation. "Are you suggesting that your brother might no longer be among the living?" I offered a solemn nod in response. "And you are willing to leave your job behind in pursuit of this truth?" He inquired, a look of intrigue etched upon his features. "To be completely candid, sir, it's the only course of action that seems reasonable to me."He paused for a moment, contemplating the possibilities, before he spoke again, "What if there existed a method to uncover the truth without having to resign from your job?" His words left me momentarily bewildered, yet I found myself intrigued, eager to hear his next thought. "You could always invite your fiancé to meet your family," he suggested, a hint of excitement in his voice.
