The next morning Sam dropped me off at school normal time, like usual, yet he seemed very suspicious. Nevertheless, I let it breeze by and said my goodbyes for the day.
As the bell for first period rang, we headed to our lessons. I sat in my situated seat at the very back of the class with Kyle, a good friend of mine. He had night black hair, spiked up to the sky, he was an unusual kid which made me love him even more! We sat at a desk for two, hidden away from the teacher, for us to cause mischief!
The perky teacher, Miss Galeski, bobbed into the classroom with a jolly smile on her face...
"Hello everyone!" She exclaimed in her usual chirpy tone. A sea of groans could be heard across the class.
"I'm glad you're all happy to be here, because we have a special guest with us today, come on in!"
I watched the door... A tall figure stepped through the door frame. Tanned skin, brown hair swished to the side, pearly teeth, pure skin. Goddamn it, it was Sam!
I felt a rush of sweat pass through my body and my face turned red as ever. I slowly slid down, sunken into my chair, away from the glance of his eyes.
"Good morning young people! Looking around I recognise a few of your faces, but for any of you who don't know me, my name is Dr. Chespin. Your local dentist!"
What was he doing here. Ugh, this couldn't be real! People must've known we were related, baring in mind he was the dentist of nearly all the kids in the local town! I mean, we look similar, and with the same last name. Stuff was about to go down.
I noticed eyes start to look back at me, trying to figure out the resemblance, yet no one said anything, until...
"HEY, YOU'RE BILLY'S BROTHER!" Samantha Gooderham. The most annoying girl in class. She just had to, the little sly fox!
I sunk my head into the palm of my hands, trying to hide my embaressment, but it was too late.
~~~
Murmers could be heard across the classroom...
"Oh yeah!"
"That's so strange!"
"Hahaha, poor Billy."
"Dang! His brother is mighty FINE!"
"lol!"
"Okay, settle down please everyone!" My brother raised his voice and everyone feasted their eyes back to the front. 'Thank goodness for that' I thought to myself!
"Yes, your classmate Billy is my younger brother, however that is not relevant here currently. Today I am here to talk all about your teeth, and how to take care of them!"
Groans scattered the classroom.
"Firstly, put your hand up if you currently have braces!"
Out of the 25 children in the classroom, 12 raised their hands.
"Put your hand up if you have HAD braces!"
"10 raised their hands."
"Okay, and finally, raise your hand if you have not had braces!"
The remaining three raised their hand, including me, still sunk into the bottom of my chair.
My brother was really getting on my nerves, just being here in MY classroom!
"So you, here, at the front. What's the reason you haven't had braces?"
Sophie, the stunner of the school, replied in a rather 'modest' tone of voice. "Because you told me a few appointments back that I already have orthodonticly perfect teeth."
"Yes I remember that, and you take good care of your teeth Sophie, it's a pleasure checking your teeth. Now, you, in the middle, what's your reason?"
"Because you told me not all of my permanent teeth have grown through yet" replied Adam, a small kid with a large brain.
"Yes, that is correct. And once your permanent teeth have grown through, we can work on the braces that you obviously deserve. Good job!"
"Now lastly, you at the back!"
My brother, his eyes had captured mine. I noticed everyone's beady eyes begin connecting with mine. Crap.
"Ah, hello Billy. So, tell everyone. What's your reason for not having braces?"
I couldn't lie, he knew the truth. Yet, I didn't want to embaress myself infront of all my peers. Damn, it just had to be done.
I cleared my throught and raised my kneck up high, trying to hide the audacity and my sheepish, blushing ways. "Errr" I rubbed the sweat of the back of my neck. "Because, well, I refuse to let you put them on my teeth..."
Slight giggles could be heard exchanging across the class. I slowly, sinked back into my chair before rushing towards the door, to make my great escape. I had taken just me and my bag, and I was heading for the school field. I heard the concerned voice of my teacher call my name, but I was out of there!
Everyone was in class so the corridors resembled a zombie apocalypse, empty and silent. I slid around the corner and zoomed onto the school field, where I layed, face flat on the damp grass, crying tears of anger!
I cried, I cried and I cried...
I hated my brother so much for this, I'd been humiliated, no one would ever let me live this down. As I continued to cry, I felt the warm presence of another human next to me. I sniffed, peering out of the corner of my eye to notice it was Mr Mullender, one of my favourite teachers. He was young, perhaps about 23, and was one of the kindest people I knew. He was sitting down crossed legged beside me, with his hand placed gently on my back. I sat up, wiping away my salty tears.
"Hello sir" I sniffed.
"Hello Billy. I saw you dart out of the front doors, so I followed. Hope that's okay?" He was such a down to earth, genuine sort of guy, I felt I could tell him anything.
I nodded softly.
"How about you come with me to my classroom, it's empty as I have no classes today." I nodded my head, still sniffing away my sadness. He grabbed my bag for me, and I followed him through the abandoned corridors, until we finally reached his classroom.
"Here, grab a seat" he beckoned, pulling out a chair for me to plonk my bottom on. I took a seat and he placed my bag beside me, then proceeded to hand me a box of tissues.
"So, what seems to be the problem? You can tell me anything Billy, I'm just here to help" he said, pulling up a chair beside me, smiling in a soft way.
"My brother, he's a dentist" I started, still sniffling. "He came in today to talk to the class, and he embarrassed me in front of everyone." Tears began to run down my face again as Mr Mullender placed his warm hand on my shoulder.
"Carry on Billy" he smiled. "How did he embarras you?"
"Well, he was talking about braces, and he made me tell the whole class why I haven't had them."
"And what is that reason, Billy?"
"Because I won't let him put them on my teeth" I explained, my head sinking into my chest.
"Can I ask why?" Mr Mullender questioned.
"I'm not really sure" I began. "I guess it's just a fear of mine, the dentist. Me and my brother had a brawl in the office at my last checkup as I wouldn't let him see my teeth. I'm just so scared of the dentist."
Mr Mullender nodded. "I understand Billy. But have you told your brother this?"
I shook my head no.
"Stay here Billy, I'll be right back. I'm going to help you, okay?"
I nodded. Mr Mullender left, and I began to panic. Where was he going? What was he going to do? I could feel my heart start racing like a cheetah chasing its prey.
And then Mr Mullender re-entered the classroom...
