The Confrontation

1064 Words
I woke up the next day to the smell of coffee. Everyone is up, enjoying a cup of coffee. I made one myself and took a seat next to Kai. This maybe the first time I've seen him happy in a while. Me: So what's everyone's planning for today? Lilly's eyes are so puffy. Poor girl must have cried all night. She informs me she is taking the day off. I nod, understanding why she chose to do that. Briggs cuts in. Briggs: I took off today to stay with her. Me: Oh ok. I'm really sorry. I didn't expect that to happen. Lilly: It's OK Mels. I never thought my brother could be that cruel. And I can't believe my other brother wouldn't tell me what was going on. I also can't believe my boyfriend, but I understand. Like you said, you hoped they would have figured it out. Me: We'll talk more about it later. I have to work today and I don't want to be late. I got up to wash my mug out and head to my room. I grab my clothes and head to the bathroom to freshen up. I don't want to go, but I have to get a new phone now. I guess I can buy one on my break. I finished getting ready and headed back to the living room. I say bye to everyone. Kai is behind me. Kai: Do you mind if I walk you to work? Me: No. I'll be ok. Kai: Well I insist. You don't have a phone anymore, and I'm sure you don't want to run into Leon. So shall we? He's right. I don't want to face Leon right now. I nod and we leave, waving bye to Lilly and Briggs. We head to the elevators and out of the apartment building. We walked down the street towards my job. He has his hands in his pockets. We're walking in complete silence. We can finally be friends, and he has nothing to say. Me: Thanks for walking me. Kai: Oh...uh...yeah. No problem. Me: You ok? Kai: Yeah. Just not happy finding out Leon doesn't see me as a brother. Me: I'm sure he didn't mean it. Kai: No. He did. We haven't been close since he got with Summer and that was six years ago. I dont know. The moment I met her, I didn't like her and I could never figure out why. I guess I knew deep down she wasn't any good for him. Me: Well, you still have your parents and Lilly. Kai: You're right. It's just......never mind. It's nothing. We finally arrived at my job. I thank him for walking me. He stops me and hands me a piece of paper with his number on it. It's just in case you need anything or want me to walk you home. Me: Ok. Thanks. I will. He starts to walk back to the apartment. My mouth flings open before I know what I'm doing. Me: Do you have to work today? Kai: Yeah, but my job allows me to work remotely. Why do you ask? Me: Well, I need to get a new phone. I was wondering if maybe, when I go on break, you could come with me to get one. Kai: Oh. Uh yeah. Sure. Me: Ok. I'll call you from the store before I go on break. Kai: OK great. Cant wait. See you later. I waved bye and headed inside to clock in. I can not stop thinking about last night's events. I never thought Leon would do that to me. Or to his own siblings. After finishing my refold and sweeping up the store, the door opens. Its Monica. Me: Oh hey Monica. Monica: Oh hi Melanie. I didn't know you worked here. Me: It's a small town I guess. She doesn't look at me. Guessing, I read her mood wrong. She purses her lips together, then continues to speak. Monica: I actually did know you worked here. Leon told me. What the f**k? Why would you tell a girl you just met where your girlfriend or ex-girlfriend works? Something is not right here. Me: Uh. Did you want to shop around? We have a great selection. Monica: Actually, I heard about what happened last night. Stay away from Leon. That day you left, I knew it was over for y'all. I saw how Kai looked at you. So I made a pass at Leon and he accepted it willingly. Does this b***h have the nerve to come to my job? Threaten me? And then gloat about how she whored herself out to my boyfriend? I clench my hands into fist under the table. No one's out here, and I'm sure Lilly wouldn't be mad for me defending myself. I release everything on her. I walk around the register and let her know how I really feel. Me: You think I care about that piece of s**t? You can have him. I wasted months on him. You think I'm going to cry about that sorry excuse of a human. You guys are perfect for each other. You're a w***e and he's a liar. I wish you two the best. Have fun being his new conquest. You're not the only girl trying to claim him. Now get the f**k out of this store. I shoved her out the door. Lock it. And flip the store sign to closed. She continues to go off, but I just walk off. I can't believe I just said that. I was hurt but for some reason I couldn't muster up any tears. I am actually glad he doesn't deserve my tears or my time. Speaking of time, I checked the store clock. It's almost my break. I flipped the sign back to open. I called Kai, and he said he'd be here in 5 minutes. I let my coworkers know I'm taking my break. As soon as I step out, Kai is there. Kai: Hi. Me: Hi. Kai: Ready to go? Me: Yep. But I actually have a favor to ask. Kai: Sure. Anything. Me: I want to have lunch instead of picking out a phone. I wanted to know if I gave you the money. Could you get me one? Kai: Oh. Uh sure. I know a nice little café nearby. We can talk there.
