“Why?”
“I just…. I shouldn’t have started seeing you. It’s only been 2 months since my divorce and I realized I’m just not ready to be with somebody.”
He leaned back in his seat and his eyes searched my face.
“I don’t believe you, Miah.”
Why was he making this so hard? A huge part of me wanted to tell him I was 12 weeks pregnant with another man’s child, but as much as I wanted to tell him, I wanted to tell Chris first.
Yeah, that seems stupid, but a part of me felt he should be the one I told first.
“Wyatt I’m…I’m sorry.”
With that, I stood and walked out of the restaurant. I felt horrible, but I didn’t know how to handle this situation. As I got home I couldn’t help but be angry. All of my anger revolved around one person. Christopher!
I was angry he was ruining my chances with Wyatt. I was angry that he wasn’t with me to hear I was pregnant. I was angry that he cheated. Most of me was mad that he took me for granted.
Once home, I messaged the girls and my grandparents that my appointment went well and I would tell them in on the details this weekend.
Taking a deep breath, I pressed Chris’s contact and I was immediately sent to voicemail.
“Hi Chris… it’s Miah. Could you please give me a call.”
I ended the call and a part of me was relieved to not have to speak to him, but I knew it would only be temporary because I would have to talk to him.
After a long hot shower and dinner, I realized Chris had still not called me back. I tried again and went to voicemail and left a second message. As soon as I hung up, I sent him a text message too and then headed to bed.
The following day, I explained to Elijah the appointment went well, but I wasn’t ready to run the company on my own. He almost seemed excited about staying on and running the company with me.
Sitting at my desk, I decided to give Chris a call at his office.
“Davenport Inc. Mr. Christopher Davenport’s office.”
“This is Miah Cameron. I would like to speak to Chris Davenport please.”
“He is currently unavailable. I will tell him you called.” She replied, ending the call. I never liked his secretary.
By Friday, he still had not called me back. As soon as I arrived home on Friday, I decided to make one last attempt to reach out. I called his parents.
“Davenport residence.”
“Mrs. Davenport?”
“Yes.”
“Hi, it’s Miah.”
There was an awkward silence on the line. Before she finally spoke.
“What can I do for you Miah?” She asked, sounding bitter.
“I have been trying to reach Chris but he isn’t responding to any of my calls. Could you please let him know I really need to speak with him?”
“I think, Miah, you should take him not returning you calls as a sign. He is happy with Claudia and you should leave him alone. Have a great night.”
I hung up the phone dumbfounded. Of course, he was with Claudia. I was a fool to think otherwise.
Tears flowed down my face. “Don’t worry baby…. You have mommy and I will always be there for you.”
I decided on ice cream and Netflix. This will be the last time I cry over Chris Davenport. Before I could reach the kitchen, there was a knock at my door. A small part of me thought it might be Chris and, stupidly, I ran to the door and, without looking, I ripped it open.
Standing in front of me in all his glory was Wyatt Harlow with a smile on his face and 2 dozen roses in his hands. His smile quickly faded as he rushed to me and pulled me into a hug.
“Miah, what happened….Are you OK?”
I stepped aside and allowed him to enter.
He followed me as I silently made my way to the kitchen and got the ice cream. Taking a seat across from him, I smiled and handed him a spoon.
He didn’t talk. He realized at that moment I didn’t want to talk. I wanted to eat and not think. Even if it was just for a moment.
We enjoyed the ice cream and sat in silence. I didn’t even realize we had eaten the entire pint until I went back in for another spoonful and it was gone.
“I’m going to need to hit the gym twice as hard tomorrow.” He said, giving me a small smile.
“I’m sorry.” I said, looking down at my hands.
“Hey.” He placed his finger tips under my chin and gently and lifted my head, forcing me to look at him. “You never need to apologize to me for giving me your time. Even if you get me to eat an entire pint of ice cream.”
Once again, I could feel my face turn red and my heart felt like it was beating out of my chest.
“I’m sorry about the restaurant and leaving you like I did.”
“It’s ok.”
“No, Wyatt it wasn’t and …..” But I couldn’t finish before the tears began flowing again.
He quickly pulled me out of my seat and onto his lap and just held me while I cried.
After a few minutes, I finally was able to pull myself together.
“Do you want to talk about it? You don’t have to if you don’t want to.”
“I do, but let’s go into the living room.” I didn’t trust myself on his lap any longer.
Once seated on the couch, I looked at Wyatt and I needed to fully see his reaction.
“I’m pregnant.”
It seemed to take him a minute before his face broke into a smile.
“How do you feel about it?”
“I’m scared but happy. It’s just not how I planned. I’m sorry I didn’t tell you on Tuesday but I wanted to tell Chris.”
“How did he take the news?”
“He doesn’t know. I tried but I think he blocked my number and every attempt I’ve made to contact him has been in vain. In fact, I had just hung up the phone with his mother before you showed up.”
“I take it that call didn’t go over well.”
“No it didn’t and I realized I’m doing this on my own.”
“Hey, you are not alone. I know you tried to get rid of me but here I am.”
“Why?” I couldn’t help but ask.
“I can’t stay away from you. I feel like we have a connection and I’ve never had this with anybody before. I want to find out what this is.”
“But I just told you I was pregnant with another man’s child.”
“A stupid man who took you for granted. Let me show you how you were meant to be treated.”
