Chapter 28 St. Petersburg, 1919 Militsa and Stana ran through the park behind Stana’s home. She remembered the nearby house of an old woman that had an outside door to a cellar that often swung open and shut, as if it no longer had a latch. She guessed the old woman either didn’t hear it banging or simply didn’t care. They reached it and pulled the door shut behind them. The cellar was dank, but in it they found pickled foods –cucumbers, apples, eggplant, and cabbage. They remained hiding in the cellar throughout the day and most of the night. When morning came, the two ate some of the apples and eggplant, and then left. They walked the three miles to the home of Duke Yussupov who was arranging a way out of St. Petersburg for his family.
