Wiping the bead of sweat off his forehead, Cane glanced at Vee who was standing beside the truck and still looking out of it. He had taken a life before and hence hnew how it felt when it's your first time. The change doesn't just happen to your eye color, it happens to you mentally and emotionally too. He sighed, walking to the back of the truck. He picked up the dead body of the wolf who she had killed.
Cane carried the body over to the hole he had dug and dropped the body in it. He looked around the quiet woods, picked up his shovel and began pouring the sand back in, burying the body. “Can you not tell my brother about this?" Vee finally broke her silence.
Pausing from what he was doing, Cane stood upright and turned to her with a puzzled look. “Why? It wasn't your fault, he came after you. You killed him in self defense. There's nothing to be afraid of" He explained
“I'm not afraid. I just don't... I don't think... he wouldn't...." She stuttered, searching for the right words to say.
“I understand. I get it... but still, he has to know. He has the right to know. This is a dead wolf from our rival pack. They made an attack on us. The Alpha has to know" Cane explained further and then saw her countenance as her expression dimmed. “But... maybe he doesn't have to know you killed him. I can say I did"
“Really?" She looked up at him, her eyes beaming with relief and joy.
“Yeah... I can... but what are you gonna tell him when he sees your eyes are no longer blue?"
“I don't know. I guess I'll just try to do a good job of hiding it from him for now"
“Alright cool" Cane shrugged and just then his phone began ringing. He fished out the phone from his pocket, saw the caller and then showed it to Vee. “Speak of the devil"
He checked the time. It was 1am. He wondered what was so important that the Alpha was calling him for at such late hour. He heaved a deep sigh and then picked the call. “Everything okay?"
“I need you here right now. Meet me at the packhouse. Now!!" The Alpha ordered from the other side of the phone.
“Alright, I'm on my way" Cane replied and ended the call. He looked over at Vee who had heard everything and saw the fear in her eyes.
“Do you think he knows?" She questioned
“There's only one way to find out" He replied and continued, burying the body.

Driving down the road to the packhouse after dropping Vee off, Cane wondered what could be happening and be so urgent that the Alpha sounded that way. He took the last turn into the street of the packhouse and kept his foot on the gas. He had wasted much time already while helping Vee out.
He got to the front of the packhouse and then hit the brakes. He leaned back on the seat, took a deep breath before turning off the ignition. Exiting the car, he noticed all the lights were turned on in the packhouse. Something was definitely up.
Cane got to the front door, pushed it open and came face to face with everyone awake in the common area of the packhouse. They all gave him a knowing look. “Where is he?" He asked, shutting the door behind him.
“He's at the holding area" Adam replied, stepping forward. Cane nodded and began walking past them. “And Cane!" Adam called. “He's pissed"
“Thanks" Cane replied and walked off.
He got to the holding area and could hear heavy breathing and footsteps coming from one of the holding cells. He walked through the open door and saw the Alpha standing over a young man, tied to a steel chair, bloodied and beaten half to death. Cane could barely make out the features of his face. “AD?" Cane called softly, walking into the cell.
“Good you're here. Now let's get rid of him" Alpha Diamond instructed angrily.
“What do you mean? Who is he and what has he done?"
“He's a spy Cane! Caught him keeping an eye on us at the house. I brought him here to question him and imagine my surprise when I found out he was sent by Maya's father. He's a damn Omega from Maya's pack and he was sent to spy on us!!" He barked angrily.
“We should slow down now. I don't think he meant any harm. Alpha Victor is just a worried father. Probably wanted to see if his daughter was doing okay" Cane pointed out.
“What the hell are you saying?" The Alpha asked with a surprised look. He didn't believe those were the words coming out from Cane's mouth. “This is a breach of contract. There must be a push back, a repercussion" His eyes dimmed with anger.
“She's your mate now and this is her father we are talking about"
“She's not my mate!" He retorted
“What do you mean?" Cane asked with furrowed brows
“I mean, She's not my mate. Imagine my surprise when she told me she was entering 21 in a few hours. I felt a bit relieved not having to wait for long to find out if she was truly my mate. We both waited up until it clocked 12am, a new day... and then nothing, we felt absolutely nothing! She's not my mate. That's when I decided to take a walk and then I ran into this filthy Omega" Alpha Diamond explained.
“Come now AD, we both knew she might not be your actual mate. We weren't aiming for that. She's still yours. She doesn't have to be your mate, you can claim her and she's fully yours. Who knows, you both might grow to love each other"
“Love?! Do you think that's possible when she's not my mate?" The Alpha asked with a curious look.
“Yeah. I'm a hundred percent positive. You just have to work it out with her"
“And what if I find my mate in the future or worse, she finds hers. What then?" The Alpha inquired.
“There's a slim chance of that happening. For all we know her mate might not even exist in this part of the world. He might be in some other far away country. Same goes for you" Cane explained.
Alpha Diamond sniffled and then turned his gaze back to the Omega who was barely breathing. “End him" He said without blinking.
“What?" Cane said with furrowed brows
“End him. We must send her father some kind of message and if you don't want it to be worse than this, then end him! Let him be the message" The Alpha explained.
Cane cleared his throat, backing away from the Omega. “Alpha... let's think about this for a second. There must be some other..." He trailed off as he watched the Alpha move closer to the Omega and swiftly snapped his neck. Cane stood in awe as the scene unfolded before his eyes.
“There, done" Said the Alpha, staring at Cane. He saw the look in Cane's eyes and wondered what the hell was up with him. He wouldn't hesitate to clean this sort of situation up before. Maybe he was just reading too much into it he thought. Ever since the warning from the old one, he has been on edge, paranoid. He walked closer to Cane and whispered to him. “Don't be the one to betray me"
Cane snapped out of his reverie as those words fell into his ear. He brought his gaze to the Alpha and saw the serious look in his eyes. He was about to ask what he meant by that when he felt a strange and unfamiliar feeling. His wolf was reacting to the presence of another wolf. Just then they heard footsteps fast approaching.
Cane exchanged glances with the Alpha and then they both fixed their eyes on the door, waiting for who it was to be visible to their sight. Cane couldn't understand what he was feeling. As the footsteps grew louder, the emotions he was feeling grew stronger.
His eyes widened when his eyes fell on her as she came into view. That's when it dawned on him what he was feeling. He was feeling the mate bond. His wolf was restless, agitated and excited as soon as she got closer. He looked over at her and his eyes locked with hers. He could see it in her eyes also. She was feeling it too. He could tell because at that moment he could tell what she was feeling, plus her expression said it all.
“Maya" Cane called softly, his eyes still locked with hers. Both of them forgetting that the Alpha was still there with them in the room. Cane couldn't believe what was happening. It must be a nightmare he thought.
