The demand

Driving around the block one more time and now satisfied that it was clear, Cane drove back to the packhouse and parked in front it. He killed the engine and got out just as some other car stopped right in front of him. He stared on curiously and watched as Maya got out of the car.

One couldn't miss the angry look on her face. As soon as she set eyes on him, her expression became darker. She walked up to him with her arms crossed. “You must be really proud of yourself. What kind of an Alpha are you? Killing your kind just to get what you want" She quarrelled with an irritated look.

Cane couldn't help but smile at her. He watched on as she gave him a piece of her mind. “Well I..."

“I don't wanna hear it. There's no explanation you could possibly give for the evil you are. I'll see you inside" She concluded and stormed off into the packhouse. Cane watched as she disappeared fiercely into the house and a surprised smile escaped his lips. He proceeded in right after her.

Maya walked into the room to find her father and Alpha Diamond already seated. She stared at the Alpha with furrowed brows as she walked to seat by her father. Just then, Cane walked in and went straight to the seat beside Alpha Diamond whilst staring at Maya with a knowing smile. “Where have you been?" Alpha Victor whispered to her daughter.

“Sorry, I got held up" She replied.

“Is she your right hand Beta?" Alpha Diamond asked, staring directly into her hazel green eyes.

“Yeah. She's my daughter, Maya, and my right hand Beta" He replied. “And I take it he's yours" He added, pointing to Cane

“Yeah he is. This is Cane"

“You made your daughter your right hand Beta?!" Cane pointed out.

“Yeah"

Surprised by this introduction, Maya shifted her gaze to Alpha Diamond. Staring at him with a questioning look. “So you're the Alpha?"

“Yeah I am" Alpha Diamond replied

She then shifted her gaze back to Cane, with a look that tells she knows she had f****d up. She quickly looked away from the smirking Cane. “Can we just be begin and get this war over with. It's lingered for far too long" She started

“Well, the ball is in your court...it's always been in your court. It's just you haven't been ready to play ball until now" Cane replied.

“So what is it you want for us to be able to put a stop to this war and killing?" Alpha Victor asked, listening intently. He was fed up with constant death and burials he was doing. He was willing to compromise and make anything work just to avoid any more death.

“Well you should know what we want already...." Alpha Diamond started. “We want more territ....."

“Hey!" Cane whispered and tapped him under the table, cutting him short. He drew closer to the Alpha and whispered to him. “I think we should change our deal"

“What?"

“You wanted a mate right?" He said with a smile as they both turned their eyes to Maya.

Alpha Diamond adjusted on his seat and cleared his throat. “If there's gonna be no more bloodshed or war, then you'll give me what I want"

“Let's hear it" Maya stated

“I want your daughter as my mate" He spat out the words and immediately saw the shocked looks on their faces. They definitely weren't expecting that.

“What!" Both of them exclaimed with widened eyes. Maya couldn't believe what she just heard. It was definitely turning into a nightmare. She dropped her gaze to the table in front her as she fell deep in thoughts.

“What do you mean you want my daughter as your mate?"

“That's the demand" Cane replied

“You can't demand that. She's my only child and my right hand Beta. I have no other kid, who's gonna lead my pack after I'm gone?"

“I'm sure you'll figure something out and you can always pick another right hand Beta" Alpha Diamond shrugged

“No, that's not happening. I'm not selling out my daughter. NEVER!" The Alpha stated with a stern expression

“Well I guess war it is..."

“Stop!" Maya finally blurted out. “Fine. I'll be your mate" She added, taking everyone by surprise including Cane who thought she would be the last one to ever agree.

“What? What do you mean?" Her father turned to face her

“As long as it would put an end to all this senseless killings, it's fine. I'll become his mate" She explained with a blank expression.

“You don't have to do this" Alpha Victor shook his head.

“I have to. For the pack"

“Well there is that" Alpha Diamond stated. “As long as you keep your end of the deal, then we'll keep ours and stay out of your hair and as an added bonus and you becoming family and all, we'll be there to help or assist you whenever you need us to"

“Fine. But you'll have to give me some time to prepare"

“Of course, we are not that bad. You have until after the coming full moon" Cane explained

“Thats just days from now" The Alpha quarrelled

“It's fine" Maya nodded her head in agreement to the terms.

“Well I guess we are done here" Cane concluded standing up with his Alpha.

Leaning against the wall with his arms crossed, Cane kept his gaze on his Alpha who had been in thoughts since they got into his private room. Cane sighed, rubbing his brows. “Alpha Fangs isn't gonna make any move on us. Not right now" Cane pointed out.

“Maybe. But I still think we should have demanded for more territory or something"

“What you just got is more important than territory. If Alpha Fang is to attack, we are gonna need more than territory. We are gonna need support, backup. And that's what this union offers. It's a two way street. We have their back and they have ours." Cane explained

“Yeah..." Alpha Diamond sat up. “I didn't think about it like that. You're right" He smiled. “You've proven to be the best right hand Beta yet again"

“Well, thank you. I'm deeply touched" Cane quipped

“Shut up" The Alpha replied and they both laughed. “She's obviously beautiful, right?"

“Oh yeah she definitely is... More than anyone I've seen in town" Cane agreed

“Yeah well, I guess I've gotten a mate for myself. Just you remaining. We'll have to get you one too"

“Oh no no...thank you but girls bring trouble"

“What! But you didn't hesitate to give me one" Alpha Diamond pointed out.

“Yeah well you were becoming too lonely and I wasn't gonna be the one to start cuddling you" Cane teased.

“You monster" The Alpha laughed.

“I don't think I can agree to this. This is outrageous. It's all shades of wrong. I can't just sit back and hand you over to that monster. I mean, who knows what he will do to you. He might make you his personal toy or a maid or worse" Alpha Victor paced about in the room.

Maya who was on her seat knew how her father was feeling and how this must be hard for him too. She too didn't want to leave him there alone. She's all he has after the death of her mom and he's going to lose her too. “We don't have a choice father"

“Yeah we do. We can go to war" Said the Alpha

“You said it yourself, we don't have the men for that. We'll lose before it gets started. This is the best way. It might not be that bad" She explained

“And what about our pack? Who's gonna be my right hand Beta and who's gonna take over from me?"

“We'll figure it out. I'm still in town you know, I'm not traveling out"

“And what if he's using this means to take over our pack?" He asked with a concerned look.

“I'll be there to stop him" She replied. “Besides, look on the bright side. We'll have their protection"

“We were fine on our own"

“Don't worry father..." She stood up, walked over to him and grabbed his hands. “It's going to be alright. This is going to go smoothly and everyone is gonna be alright, going about their daily life" She said softly to him.

“And you really believe this?"

“Yeah. I mean, how bad can it be?" She smiled warmly at him, not knowing the ride she was in for and how it will affect each of their lives.
