“Ernestine Leanna Paraiso.” “Ernie… Ernie…” Ernie doesn’t want to open her eyes but someone was calling her. She also felt someone poking her at the back. “Ernie, Professor Diana was calling you for the third time.” Ernie almost fell down when she suddenly stood after she heard that. Her classmates laughed and covered their faces. “Y-Yes, Professor Diana?” she asked. She’s so scared! Professor Diana was one of the strict professors and looking at her she was suddenly nervous. Her thick eyebrows rose and her professor was not smiling. “Sleeping in the middle of the discussion?” the professor asked. “I-I’m sorry, Professor Diana. I will not do this again,” she said. But her nervous vanished when the professor smiled at her. “I was just asking, don’t worry, Ernie. I know that you accidentally fell asleep in my class because of your work last night.” She said. She was shocked when she heard that. Only few people from the school know where she works. “She’s very industrious, Professor Diana! She also helps us to study and teaches us, we are thankful because Ernie is our classmate!” Helena, her classmate said. “Helena is right, Professor Diana. Ernie always makes sure that we past all the activities and exams and she always told us that it is important to study so that the money of our parents will not be wasted,” Sarah said. Ernie bit her lower lip. She didn’t know that her classmates appreciate her efforts for them. They made her so happy by recognizing her efforts. “What a kind classmate, that’s a very good trait Ernie, may I know the numbers of your parents? So that I can contact them to say that they have a good daughter who’s helping her classmates to pass the subjects.” The professor told her. Ernie’s smiled vanished upon hearing the request of Professor Diana. “Professor Diana, Ernie’s mother died when she was 17, she’s living alone in a small apartment in front of the university,” Helena said. The professor looked at her and apologized. “I’m so sorry, Ernie. I am very sad to hear that.” She said. She shook her head. It was almost one year and a half and even though the pain was still there she can manage not to be weak every time her classmates would bring up about her mother. “It is okay, Professor Diana. I know my mom heard what you said. She’s always looking at me and guiding me,” she said. The professor smiled at her and thanked her. When the class continue, Ernie looked at her window and saw the people passing by. She wonders how it feels like to graduate with their parents. She never had a chance to feel it because her mother died when she’s about to finish her last year in high school. And back then when she was in elementary no one attended because her mother needs to be at the Reverizta’s mansion for a family gathering. “I know it is hard now but I’m sure mama will be there when I finished my degree,” she said to herself. When the class was done, Ernie waited for the next professor for the math subject. She takes out her wallet and look for her money. She still has five hundred pesos, and that’s her allowance for the whole week. She can buy some canned goods, it will just cost twenty pesos, and she can eat it for lunch and dinner. And for the rice it only cost ten pesos. She always needs to think what foods she can buy with the small amount that she has. Sometimes some of her classmates pay her twenty to fifty pesos for teaching them. They said that, in that way they wanted to help her. She didn’t know that even if some of her classmates pay her, Helena and Sarah told their professor that they’re thankful because she was there helping them. “We are not yet ready for the recitation later, algebra is very hard to understand, I think I will not pass this subject,” Alysa said, “Is it okay to skip this subject today? I am not in the mood because I can’t understand anything in my notes.” Alysa was sitting beside her; she’s one of the clowns in their classroom. She always makes everybody laugh and there were no dull moments because of her. “What you do not understand on the topic, Alysa?” she asked, “I am willing to help you if I can understand it.” She’s not also good at math but she’s trying to understand their topic. Algebra is indeed hard but she can’t just look at her blank paper when the tests will come. “Here…” Alysa showed her notes. Professor Diana dismissed them early because she has a meeting to attend and now they still have 15 minutes to study for the next subject. Professor Nathaniel always has a surprise recitation so they need to be ready. When she saw Alysa’s note she also showed to her, her notes and some researches she made to fully understand the topic. “Wow, you are so diligence in studying, Ernie! Hope all!” Alysa said. She laughed when she heard her say, ‘Hope all’ that was a famous line of the youth right now. “Yes, Alysa so stop hoping you need to start now and study these,” she said and points her notes. “You can copy some of my works, and I will explain to you how to apply these strategies.” She said. Alysa nodded, she took her notebook and started to copy her notes. While waiting for their mathematics professor, Ernie went out and goes to the comfort room. When she reached the comfort room she went to the one of the cubicle and pee. “So are you going to apply as a student assistant? It will help you to earn money and continue to study here at the Guerrero colleges.” “I don’t know if mama will allow me, but I wanted to help them, maybe later I will tell them about it.”
