##Chapter 18 The Reprisal

1086 Words
I found it kind of ridiculous. What could I get from him? I admitted that I envied what Wayne had, but I bothered to get the things not belonged to me in this way. I looked at Doris and said, "Miss Green, I think you've misunderstood. The relationship between me and Mr. Wayne is not like what you think. Besides, I guess you probably already know what I do. For someone like me, I wouldn't dare aspire to have any relationship with him. You don't have to worry about it..." "How ridiculous!" Doris interrupted me angrily, "What do you think I'm here for? You are right, no one can challenge my status. Do you really believe Wayne will value you?" I was extremely uncomfortable with what she said. It was full of the contempt for me in her word. And I couldn't help but feel that the self-esteem I had always maintained had been wiped out after I met Wayne. "Sorry, Miss Green. I have an agreement with Mr. Wayne. If you really want to know about it, you can ask him. You know, with my status, I have no right to tell you about it." I could tell that she was a pushy woman. And sure enough, after hearing what I said, the honorable look she had maintained before was suddenly replaced by a ghastly expression of jealousy, "Okay, let's see how long you can be proud!" She left after the words were out of her mouth. I stood still silently, watching the crowd and traffic coming and going outside the door. But somehow, I felt that something bad would happen. As I predicted, when Will and I went to the store early the next morning, we found that the front door we decorated yesterday was smashed by someone. Will rushed to the door after he saw it from a distance. Looking at the broken glass on the floor, he nearly cried. I was also dumbfounded. The first suspect came to my mind was Doris. "Caroline, what should we do?" Will asked me, squatting on the ground and choking with sobs. What could we do? To be honest, I had no idea. The money for the renovation was the last fund we had. I made a desperate bet on this small store, but I didn't expect that it would be ruined before it opened. "Will, get up," I pulled him up calmly, "It's okay, I'll figure it out. We can redecorate it soon. Don't worry." But Will looked at me with a desperate expression. And after a while, he said, "Let's just transfer the store, I..." "Why?" I asked him sadly, "Didn't you want to have your own store? We've already realized the wish, why do you want to transfer it now?" He stared at me, "Is it because you offended Paul?" This name suddenly bombed in my mind. I thought of Doris first because she just came to me yesterday, and I thought that this was the warning she gave me. But I almost forgot Leopard... If it was really done by Leopard, what Will worried would make sense. Leopard was different from Doris. He was a well-known bully, and he had Mrs. Fox as his backer. Even if he committed a crime, he could get away with it. With the relationship between Wayne and Mrs. Fox, Leopard seemed to be afraid of Wayne, but in fact, he must have done a lot of bad things behind him. I thought so myself, but I couldn't show any worry in front of Will. "It's alright. You go home first, and I'll find someone to solve it." After Will left, I looked at the mess in front of me for a while. I hesitated for a long time before calling Wayne. Beep-beep... He didn't answer the phone. Putting down the phone, I smiled wryly. What kind of person Wayne was, why I expected him to answer it as I called him so recklessly. In the conditions, it only said I must be at his beck and call, and my own willing was never mentioned. But now I really needed help, and I only knew several people here. Apart from Will, the people I knew were no more than those in Paradise Lost. But they were also struggling to hold on, how could they care about me? Suddenly, I thought of Jason. He was always nice to me. He would help me again this time, right? I called him with trepidation. Different from Wayne, Jason answered the phone almost as soon as the call was connected. Hearing his concerned voice, I almost cried out. "Jo Jo? What's wrong?" he asked me anxiously. He probably heard my rapid breathing on the phone. "Nothing... Jason, can you lend me some money?" I asked him hesitantly. "What happened? Are you all right, Jo Jo?" "I'm in some trouble..." I was hesitant if I should tell him or not. "Where are you? I'm coming to you," he said firmly. Looking at the mess in the store, I knew that money alone was not enough. I really needed someone to help me with these. I felt if it was Jason, it would be more reliable than finding someone else. After making up my mind, I told him the address of the store. As soon as I hung up the phone, it rang again. I thought that was Jason, so I picked it up without looking at the number. I didn't expect that the call was from Wayne. "What's the matter?" his voice was still icy. I was a little hesitant, wondering if I should tell him that the store was smashed. "Speak!" he urged impatiently because of my silence. "I... I had some trouble, but it's resolved now," I decided not to tell him. Our relationship was very simple. We merely make use of each other, and it was far from the extent that he would lend a hand. Without warning, Wayne hung up the phone directly. I still felt a little disappointed. Although I didn't expect him to help me, I hoped that he would ask me with concern about what happened to me. It seemed that he was really ruthless. With my hand on my heart, I warned myself again that I couldn't let myself fall in love with a man like Wayne, or I would be beyond redemption! Jason came quickly. Seeing this, he was also stunned. He looked around the store, and asked me angrily, "Who did it?"
