Meetings
Emma used to live in Alfriston with her toxic parents. This was her 13th birthday. Her parents didn’t celebrate it as always. At night, when her parents went to sleep, she took out the train ticket she bought after collecting money for years. She packed her clothes, water, and some food and ran away. After a while, it started to rain. She reached on time when the train was about to depart. She got in all wet and tired. As she was looking for her seat, her head was filled with thoughts of what she was going to do. Where would she go? Thinking about everything that had happened and what would happen, scared her and her eyes started to fill with tears. She quickly wiped them as she found her seat. She was still half out of breath as she sat down and drank some water. A surgeon from London was traveling in that train too. She went to meet her parents for a while and now was going back. Lydia was sitting in front of Emma. When Lydia saw her all wet and her eyes wet from crying, Lydia asked her if everything was okay. At first, Emma didn’t tell her anything but Lydia knew from her voice that something was wrong and kept asking her the same question. Emma finally gave in and told her that she had run away from home because of her parents and didn’t know where to go. Lydia had a golden heart and insisted “You should come to live with me. I will take great care of you. Besides, you said you don’t have anywhere else to go. I also live alone in an apartment, so it will be good to have someone to talk to” Emma didn’t want to be a burden, so she kept denying it. But Lydia didn’t back out until Emma agreed. They both arrived at London in about one and a half hours. Lydia called an uber after half an hour and they reached her apartment. Going in, Lydia gave Emma a towel so she could take a shower. They ate food which they had bought on their way. They went to sleep right after. The following morning, after breakfast, they started to clean the house, since Lydia hadn’t been home for a while, so the house was a bit dusty. While cleaning, Emma went into the living room to clean, but when she opened the door she saw a boy sitting on the couch. She asked slowly, “Who are you?” The boy didn’t answer her so she went a little closer and asked again. This time the boy got up and turned around with a confused expression. His skin was pale and he was wearing a black oversize sweater and black pants. He had black hair and had a bowl cut. He asked her “Are you talking me?” “Do you see anyone else in this room? Madam Lydia told me she lives here alone.” “How can you see me?” the boy asked with the same confused expression. “With my eyes stupid. You are weird. Get out of here or else I am going to tell-” Before Emma could complete, Lydia entered the room “Who are you talking to?” Emma pointed at the boy and asked “Do you know this boy? He is pretty weird. I told him to leave but he is not listening.” “What are you talking about? There is no one here except us” Emma turned her face towards the boy, questionably. He was still there. The boy told her, “You may find it weird, but I am a ghost and no one can see me. Don’t tell her about me right now. Please” Then Emma turned to Lydia. “I was just joking.” Lydia smiled and said “I really thought you were talking to someone. You are good at acting.” They both laughed and got busy cleaning the rest of the apartment. The boy left the room. When she had finished cleaning, she started to search for him around the apartment. It didn’t take long for her to find him, she found him standing on the balcony. She stood beside him watching the beautiful moon as it shone in the dark starry sky. Emma introduced herself with a heartwarming smile “Hey. Let’s start with introductions. I’m Emma. I … um … ran away from home because of my parents and ended up here. What is your story?” The boy, confused as always, asked “Why are you talking to me?” Emma replied “Well, you don’t seem harmful. Now tell me about you.” After seeing her beautiful smile and kindness, he felt good. His sad face turned into a happy smile. “My name is Lucas. I died a year ago because of weakness. I was born weak. I always had to see doctors. I never really went to school. I died in the hospital where Dr. Lydia worked at. When I died, I didn’t know where I should go. I tried to follow my parents but they sat in the car and drove off and I couldn’t keep up with them. I couldn’t go home. Of Corse I knew the address but I was new in London, I am originally from Spain. I was watching my parents drove off then I saw Dr. Lydia getting inside her car so I ran and sat in that taxi too. Since then I have been living here.” Lucas confessed. “So do you want to meet your parents?” Emma asked “Yes. Maybe someday I will meet them” Lucas replied. “And I will make sure to help you find them” “Can you do me a favor?” “Sure. What is it?” “Please don’t tell anyone about me. And about my parents, who knows if they went back to Spain. So you don’t have to trouble yourself.” “Why don’t you want anyone to know?” “I am fine like this” “But they are going to help you” “Do you really believe that?” Emma looked down. Her smile disappeared from her face. She had trust issues because of the atmosphere of her home. She only came along with Lydia because it was better than not knowing where to go in this big city, better than sleeping on the road. “It’s worth a shot” Emma lifted her eyes and looked at Lucas. Her eyes had light, determined to start a new life “I’ll see Lydia for a while then we’ll decide whether to tell her or not” “Fine…” Lucas sighed “That works for me” Lydia got Emma into a school the very next day. “Lydia enrolled me into a school”, Emma told Lucas upon returning home. Lydia went straight to work after dropping off Emma. “Good for you”, Lucas said with a light smile on his face. “You mentioned that you wanted to go to school too” “Yeah” “You can come with me” “What’s the point, no one can see me” Lucas said, turning his eyes on the ground. “I can see you. And you can also learn there”. After a bit more convincing Lucas finally agreed. As time passed, Emma’s relation with both Lucas and Lydia got better. Lucas became her best friend and Lydia became a mother figure. At last, a month later Emma told Lydia about Lucas’ existence “At least now I know who had been messing around in the house. And making creepy noises at night”
